âhello little man! what are you doing here?â you mumbled, observing a small leaf bug crawl across your generator. you were fascinated by the creature and surprised that something so little and harmless could exist in this realm.
it encouraged you that even such a tiny kernel of beauty could thrive here; there was innocence yet to be had.
ever so gently, you coerced the leaf bug onto your finger, lifting him close to your face to get a better look at him. a smile found its way to your lipsâthis little guy was a symbol of hope to you.
âiâll name youâŠmason. yeah, you look like a mason.â
âhe looks more like a sam to me,â said a voice from behind you, startling you so much you nearly flung masonâor samâinto the air. you made sure the little guy was okay before turning to look at the intruder, fear flooding your eyes when you realized it was the killer.
a member of the legion. joey, maybe?
you began scrambling away, trying to get up and run, but the killer towered over you and you were catty-cornered with the generator and the tree.
mason seemed unbothered, looking up at you from the palm of your hand as if to ask, âwhatâs wrong?â
joey crouched down in front of you slowly, mask expressionless and body language unreadable. somehow among all of your racing thoughts and panicky heartbeat you managed to notice that his knife was nowhere in sightâwhy didnât he have his knife out?
âquit shaking,â joey almost laughed. âiâm not going to hurt you.â
your head tilted to the side curiously at his words as you realized that you had been trembling, because you thought he was going to kill you, as a killer should. why wasnât he going to kill you?
speechless, you watched as joey reached out and scooped mason (sam?) from your hand, observing the bug calmly.
âwow, you really think he looks like a mason?â the killer mused, looking up at you. his face was hidden but it seemed that he was smiling, and he was probably waiting for an answer.
but you were so afraid and confused.
ârelax,â he said, as if reading your mind. âjust relax.â
so you tried to relax.
but what if he was tricking you? why would a killer be nice to you?
maybe joey just really liked bugs too.
he could sense that you still felt uncomfortable, so he sat down all the way and placed mason/sam in the space between the two of you.
âdoes he not look like a sam to you? i just really think heâs a sam,â joey mumbled, scratching his head. you couldnât help but giggle, which made the killer snap his gaze to you. he made you laugh!
after a few moments of silence you gathered some confidence and said, âi donât know, mason was the first vibe i got. i think it suits him. isnât that right, mason?â
mason didnât reply.
but he was only a leaf bug, so what could he say?
the two of you sat in comfortable silence for a minute, and it was nice. the ground was soft and damp; there was a slight drizzle, but not enough to make your clothes wet; crows shrilled in the distanceâit was probably neaâs fault. she loved to mess with them.
then suddenly joey said, âthomas.â
ââŠwhat?â
âthomas. he looks like a thomas.â
you cocked your head, studying mason/sam/thomas. huh. he kind of did look like a thomas.
you hummed and nodded your head. âalright. thomas it is.â
picking up the newly named thomas, you smiled first at the bug and then up at joey. he was being quite nice, and you quite enjoyed his company. odd behavior for a killer, but you werenât complaining.
joey asked, âwhat kind of bug is he?â
âleaf bug! isnât he cute?â
âyeah, i guess so. heâs pretty cute.â
a beat.
â..hey joey?â
âyeah?â
âare you sure youâre not gonna hurt me?â
joey sighed in amusement. âiâm sure. iâm not as bad a guy as you thinkâbelieve it or not, under this mask, iâm extremely attractive.â
âoh, i see.â a smile lit your face at his sarcasm.
âlike, so hot, you wouldnât believe.â
âintriguing, mr. legion. iâll have to see for myself one day, wonât i?â

i am sorry to inform you that frank is a bitch and would 100% kill any bug just to make you sad.
the first time he saw you admiring a bug he laughed at you and smushed the little thing under his boot. the expression on your face was pricelessâthat pout on your lips was so cute and sad :)
although he would be lying if he said he didnât feel a twinge of guilt after you simply pursed your lips and turned away from him, continuing what you were doing before.
you were genuinely interested in that bug, and he took it away from you without hesitationâof course you were a little butthurt. the entity never showed mercy, never granted anything good, and yet you had found a tiny sliver of life and beauty. now it was gone.
frank found himself longing for your forgiveness. why?? he had no idea. but he actuallyâŠfelt bad.. there was just something in your expression that rubbed him the wrong way. you were hurt.
wow⊠guilt was certainly a new concept to himâŠ.how gross.. he didnât want to feel guilty. he had to get you to forgive him so he didnât have to feel guilty anymore.
how could he make it up to you though?
he decided that perhaps he could show you something else beautiful. if beauty is what you wanted, he couldâno, wouldâshow you beauty, even in the entityâs realm.
frank stole you away from the campfire, leading you by hand to somewhere unknown. the whole way there you pelted him with questions, frazzled and afraid, but he didnât answer, only forged on with determination.
it wasnât long before the air turned frigid and dry; the cold wind razing your skin and the chilled air nipping at your cheeks caused uncontrollable shivers to ripple through your body. you had arrived at mount ormond.
frankâs hand was coarse, yet warm, and so was the rest of him, so you found yourself huddling against him as best you could while you rushed to the ski lodge.
you didnât know each other too well, and of course there was the bug incident.. and he was also a killer.. but despite this you didnât mind frank. you figured that the killers had no choice in this job, and aside from the crazy ones like ghostface or trickster, most of them didnât want to be murderers for eternity.
wellâŠthey still killed people.. but now that you were stuck here there, a new area of grey-ish morality and judgement had formed. it was the best most survivors could do; most traditional or personal ideals had been abandoned.
once inside, frank rushed to find blankets and jackets and hats and gloves; he practically made you a marshmallow with all of the layers he insisted you adorn.
âwhatâmmfâare youâŠwhat are you doing..â you somehow managed to mumble as he wrapped a scarf around your neck and yanked a beanie over your head, both of which invaded, respectively, parts of your mouth and eyes.
âyou gotta bundle up. itâs cold.â
âokay..â
he himself remained in his simple hoodie and jeans. an absolute madman.
next thing you knew, frank was hustling you up the stairs, up a ladderâand now you were on the roof.
â..are you gonna kill me?â you wondered aloud, somehow only considering this just now. but frank just waved his hand dismissively, helping you settle down into a safe little divet in the roof. so you took that to mean no, he wasnât going to kill you.
you hoped.
now everything was still. it was quiet. the wind, even though you were impossibly high up, had ceased, leaving only the unmoving air to chill you. but thanks to frankâs thorough fashion show, you were a warm little marshmallow.
the thing that took your breath away, however, was the sky.
it was the first time you had ever noticed the stars here. there were millionsâno, trillionsâof them, all scattered about the navy canvas like freckles to a sunkissed face. they winked intermittently; you liked to imagine that they were laughing. if it could be heard, you mused that it would sound like the gentle tinkling of bells or the clinking of glasses.
and then there was the moon. you wondered if it was even realâhow could you know if it was real? you didnât know where you were: if you were on earth or in hell; if you were in another dimension; if you even existed anymore.
but still, the moon was undeniably beautiful. milky white, dotted with craters and scars, large and lonelyâthe object loomed above everything, its watchful eye seeming, to you, to protect you and frank and all other things in its sight. what was the moon if not lovely? if not wonderful? if not comforting?
you could feel frankâs gaze burning the side of your faceâwhen you finally tore your eyes from the sky to him you realized his mask had been cast aside, and his features were revealed.
you smiled warmly. and he smiled as best he could, even if his best was a slight twinge at the corner of his mouth. you could see in his eyes what he wanted to convey.
then he pulled his hand out of his pocket, unfurled his fingers, and you gaspedâa lightning bug scuttled forward, the light on its rear-end blinking once. the gentle creature then opened its wings and buzzed away; you watched it go.
where had this side of frank come from? who was this guy? surely it wasnât the domineering opponent who had so many times harmed you, who had so many times sacrificed you, who had so many times struck fear into your heart?
your dazed and awestruck expression provided all the redemption frank needed. he hadnât expected to be so enraptured by your fascination with lovely thingsâhe had only wanted to get rid of the strange guilt he harbored. but now, he wanted to provide you with more things beautiful. he wanted to see you captured by wonder, dazzled by grace, moved by purity.
âŠwhat was wrong with him? holy shit
um
wow, he had to step on another bug or something. he was getting way too soft.
but those desires remained. the firefly had elicited such a feeling of curious joy in your heart that frank could almost feel it too. he wanted to feel it too.
gradually, he learned from you. he had observed your innocence, and he had ultimately decided that he did not deserve youâhe was much too empty and broken a personâbut strangely, you continued to pursue him. you sought him out to show him small bugs you had found, little flowers, curious thing you had contemplated. you wanted to show him what it was like to feel wonder in a place where at first glance, there was nothing to wonder about.

leon was possibly the most loyal person you had ever known. no matter what pain you both suffered, what shame you both endured, he remained at your side, and you at his.
you were still quite new to the entityâs realm, so many things were changing both internally and externally for you, but the one thing that stayed constant was leon. from the second you arrived he guided and taught you how to survive here; he was kinder than anyone; he was a great comfort in this terrifying shift from normal life to genuine hell.
leon found himself undeniably fascinated with you, and everyone except you knew this. when you left, his gaze trailed after you; when you were focused on a task, he was focused on you; when you smiled or laughed, he chanced to be attacked by a sudden coughing fit, because he just couldnât handle the sight.
meg swore that leonâs pupils grew twice the size just looking in your direction, after which jake teased that the rookie just liked the view when you walked away. leon shoved him off of the log.
you werenât necessarily airheaded, just oblivious.
your favorite pastime in-between trials was searching for bugs or interesting plants at the survivor camp. sometimes while you were doing this, leon couldnât help but glance over every now and then, until it became constant and he was just watching you.
once, meg had come up next to leon, observing you for a few moments. she then commented that you were akin to a fairy, and leonâs red ears indicated that he happened to agree, despite his silence.
your fairy-like demeanor even carried over into trials. you didnât seem to be worried aboutâŠanything. you made light conversation while repairing generators with a teammate, you smiled at anyone you met eyes with, and you sometimes forgot you were in a trial as you meandered about, wondering at the crows and plants.
leon took it upon himself to protect you when you were in such a state, all amazed and dreamy, though you were perfectly capable of taking care of yourself if you were only more present. getting lost in your imagination was simply your method of coping with the terrors that were constantly at your heels.
it just made leon feel better to know for sure that you were safe. when you were in a trial without him, anxiety consumed and immobilized him, leaving him to rot until you returned.
eventually, he grew in confidence and expressed his worry more outwardly instead of letting it shake him up on the inside. you didnât mind at allâit was adorable. never had anyone doted on you like leon with his careful and altruistic ways.
when you appeared at the campfire after a trial, it was guaranteed that leon would be there, ready to spring up at a momentâs notice. and sure enough, this time was no different.
leon rushed to you with the utmost haste, taking your hands in his own the moment he could reach them.
âare you okay? who was the killer? did they ever chase you? did you get distracted again? tell me you werenât hurt badly.â
he really fretted over you like a mother hen, you thought, laughing to yourself.
you only smiled warmly, squeezing his hands back. there may have been a bit of a mischievous twinkle in your eye; when he worried too much, you shut your lips tight, trying to show him that nothing of significance had occurred and that he need not spare a thought your way.
but how could leon ever do that? he poked and prodded until he got a definite responseâand i mean that literally. he poked your tummy, tickled where he knew it would affect you the most, and held your face in his hands (more like squished your cheeks into a ferocious duck face) while staring you down with mock seriousness.
and the most he got was, âiâm doing fine!â and a bout of laughter to accompany it.
his shoulders sagged.
your lips quirked to one side. âi told you not to worry about me, mr. i-save-everyone. but to show you my thanks for always caring about me, i brought you something.â
his eyebrows raised suspiciously. you brought him something?
miraculously, the little ladybug you had managed to coax into your palm had remained there throughout all your endeavors. perhaps it trusted youâprobably not, but you liked to believe so. in reality, it had probably used your hand as a bathroom.
leonâs eyes widened at the sight of the spotted creature. he knew you had a knack for nature, but this was something else. he would never be able to find something so small andâŠlovely.
you grinned. âitâs not much, but i thought youâd like it. you wanna name it?â
âhell, yeah. how aboutâŠpatty?â
âpatty. okay. i like that!â
patty the ladybug had now decided it was time to take her leave, having been christened; and so she bid farewell, lifted her itty bitty wings and darted off into the murky forest beyond.
that left you and leonâhe was awestruck. and not necessarily with the ladybug. he looked at you like no one has ever done before, eyes fixed on your face with so much intent and curiosity you were struck with the nagging urge to hide away.
but you ignored the heat rising to your face and suddenly took his hand in yours. âyou wanna look for more ladybugs with me, big man?â
a soft smile met his lips. âsure. only if i get to name all of them.â
âwow, selfish.â
âhey, iâm gracing you with my presence. itâs only fair.â
âoh, wow, alright thenâitâs settled.â
âright then. iâll start thinking of names,â leon grinned proudly, then began to hum in contemplation as you lead him to search for more ladybugs. âhmm.. bingo?âŠjonathon.. mark.. gracieâŠbilly joelâŠ.â
