Fiverr isn't a "place 4 ppl to whore themselves"...

Hell, if someone paid me what equals a week’s worth of food money in my country just to do something as harmless as saying a few words, I’d bite. I don’t see where the negative is here.

I’d jump at that much money for relatively harmless work. Food in Australia for my household is at least $300 a week. I’d dive on it.

The negative is that people are blaming these guys for something that wasn’t their fault. No one’s bothered to do enough research to find out how Pewdiepie made the news in the first place. The funnyguys don’t speak English fluently and didn’t know what they were agreeing to so they accepted the job. PDP  posted the video on 11 January, the funnyguys who live in the Tamil region of India got banned not long after because the message read “Death to All Jews” due to PDP doing it for the lulz.

They asked him for help to get unbanned. He ignored them for two or three days and made excuses on his channel and said “Well people will do anything for money”, conflating well off first worlders with poor third worlders making an honest living instead of stealing off coal trains. People defending Pewdiepie are blaming the funnyguys for being dumbasses, but they’re the real dumbasses for not understanding how simple currency exchange rates and poor countries work.

The media called him out for being such a dick in January and it forced him to apologise and the backlash helped to get the account unbanned along with Pewdiepie’s help two weeks later. It became a negative because people don’t understand that the media first reported on this in January and the February WSJ article was a follow up article to these January articles saying “Well, it’s not the first time he’s made anti-Semitic jokes, but these ones didn’t ruin someone’s livelihood”. In return, a lot of people defending PDP started victim blaming the funnyguys to attack the media, when in reality Pewdiepie shouldn’t have taken advantage of them in the first place and the media was actually correct to report on it.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?Jesus, you had to pick the tough one.I would say finish my summer internship. It was hell, but I survived it. Not only that, but through my bitterness I found a way to learn useful skills from it that will help me all through life, and it’s one step closer to my graduation. And in all honestly, I truly believe it changed me and what I value, and has helped me to be more vocal about my feelings and care less about what other people think about me. Not entirely, but again, baby steps.

One of the more level headed summations of the PDP incident I’ve seen. What I don’t understand is the condemnation of fiverr as a whole instead of their poor handling of the situation and PDP getting these guys’ account suspended by requesting something that broke the ToS, and not immediately owning up and righting things.

Well, from what I gather, PDP published the video and a swathe of people went over to Fiverr and mass complained about it. Fiverr then terminated their account without taking into account that English isn’t their main language and that they were deliberately misled by a client. I’m not sure if this was an automated response by Fiverr or if the number of complaints attracted a moderator. Fiverr on the whole didn’t seem to take their word for it that they were misled until Pewdiepie was forced by the media and angry onlookers into a two week campaign to get it fixed following the ban. So yes, people can definitely blame Fiverr for how poorly handled it was, but Fiverr might have actually been reviewing their content before they unbanned them to be sure. It’s hard to tell because their ToS is vague enough let alone their internal stuff.

Fiverr are being blamed directly because it’s mainly Americans/Europeans not realising that not everyone lives in America or some other nice first world country. $5 USD is a lot of money in a lot of poorer countries, but the people onlooking are generally misinformed and don’t seem to understand that people from poor, non-English speaking countries can make a nice amount of money from foreign currency. Instead it’s “EXPLOITATION IN AMERICA” or some paternal attitude towards adults in other countries exploiting exchange rates for profit. The entire concept of Fiverr offends them. They don’t seem to realise or care that people sign up to sites like Fiverr because they need the money and if they didn’t want to be there then they wouldn’t be there and it’s not Fiverr’s responsibility to parent its sellers. It’s personal ideology over accepting that not everyone has the same worldview, background or financial situation as them.

As for why they aren’t targeting PDP’s actions in getting them banned, it’s because Youtubers, the fans of Youtubers and the haters of the mainstream media have closed rank to try and protect their own interests. Kotaku, while one of my least favourite media outlets, has accurately summarised the attitude of these people which compels them to defend PDP. They want to protect the platform itself by defending Youtube’s biggest name so that they can’t be held to account for their actions. Anyone who called PDP an idiot was attacked by other Youtubers for not completely supporting PDP’s harmful actions, because other Youtubers calling him out gives power to the media and validates them calling him out.  PDP admitting that he did the wrong thing so soon also validates the media’s credibility in making the complaint. They don’t want the media to comment on their channels because it gives the media the power to make or break channels and their content in their exposure and reporting. It’s about power, not whether or not PDP did the right thing to these people.  For me it killed the credibility of PDP’s defenders saying it was a media hit piece. PDP earned that WSJ article with how he behaved towards everyone involved.
