umbracolous answered: In most schools in the US, it would be very rude to call your teacher by their first name :o Titles just seem natural now? It feels weird when one teacher calls another by their first name because weâre so used to using their last names frogsandcrowns said: In england and in france i always had to call teachers sir/miss/mr/monsieur/madame etc and by their surname! Same at university- although of course teachers call US by our first name, so itâs not a equal relationship. i'm loving how this discussion is going! i chose 2 of you who i feel represent the variety of answers i have gotten so far. i find this really fascinating and i'd love to one day do a proper study of this. i had an english professor who told me once that people from sweden (and scandinavia in general i suppose) are often perceived as rude when we travel abroad because we don't use titles or say "thank you" and "you're welcome" as much as you do in ex. England or America. i don't think swedish people in general are more rude by any means, i happen to have the belief that most people are generally the same - despite where they live, no country are more rude or more kind than any others. but i think it's a certain tone in my language that allows itself to be interpreted as a bit rude whenever i speak english, i have to force myself to remember to say "thank you" and "you're welcome" more so than i do normally when i speak swedish. so it often causes me a little bit of anxiety whenever i speak english, because i have always been afraid of coming across as rude. especially also since northern accents in swedish (which is an accent i have), are often distinguished by the fact that we speak very shortly and not with more words than necessary (for example: check out this video). i feel like i have gotten a clearer picture now how the situation is in other countries, where perhaps the norm is more to use titles and more polite language in academic and "fancy" situations.
