Robert Redford on the roof of the Fox Village Theatre in Westwood, California in home movie footage shot by actor/photographer Roddy McDowall in 1965. During an interview on Inside the Actor’s Studio in 2005, Redford revealed that he used to climb the high art deco style concrete tower displaying the Fox Village Theatre’s name with his step-brother when they were teenagers and unscrew the light bulbs in the letter X so the sign read “F-O” (ie: “Fuck Off”), which amused them tremendously when they drove by the theatre and viewed their handiwork afterward. After telling Roddy this story in 1965, they stealthily climbed on to the roof and recreated how he did it while McDowall captured the moment on film. Built in 1930 and declared a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Landmark in 1988, the Fox Village Theatre is still in operation as the Fox Regency Theatre and a number of movie premieres have been held there over the past nine decades.
