Series Coda: A Farewell to Fringe
The network allowed the show to remain on the air long enough to finish on its terms, unlike a lot of shows that either go on far too long where you kinda have to remember two or three or four years back—when it was great—or shows that get cut off way too early. This is that very rare animal that actually … got to live its life.
… .
There’s no way that the show would ever have stayed on the air if the fans hadn’t been as vocal and committed and wonderful as they’ve been. And every time someone tells me that they’re a fan of Fringe, I just feel this—you know—desperate gratitude to them because they are the reason the show was allowed to stay on.
J.J. Abrams’ comments here always remind me of the hashtag campaigns started by Fringenuity during season 4 to help convince Fox et al. that Fringe had a rabidly loyal following that justified giving the series a fifth and final season. It started in January 2012 before Back to Where You’ve Never Been (#CrossTheLine) and was picked up by Fox starting with A Short Story About Love, when #WhereYouBelong appeared in the lower right corner of the screen during the broadcast. I hopped on the bandwagon at Welcome to Westfield (#BreakingOut), joining Twitter for the sole purpose of helping to keep Fringe on the air. Such exciting times, being part of the Resistance!
