Friday the 13th is coming! That means it’s “unlucky” in America. Black cats (all black animals) are still quite discriminated against and can be the last adopted in shelters, along with “special needs” and elderly animals.

You’d think this is fake, like uncommon in 2023, but my neighbour 2 years ago had an out-loud, loud conversation with her adult kids about how my elderly black cat being in the grass across the street, was an ill omen and needed to be avoided.

Miss Squeak E. Mouse has only ever been a sweet old grandma cat. She escorts baby ducks to and from ponds to keep hawks away. She hangs out with possums because they’re gentle and scared, like she often.

And these people make threatening tones and speeches about how this tiny, 6-7lb black cat, is secretly evil.

I think Friday the 13th needs to be Black Cat Day.

There's a lot of superstition around Friday the 13th, and high school age people especially seem to go a tad loopy every time a Friday the 13th rolls around, or at least they did when I was in high school! Here are my top tips for a positive Friday the 13th.

🖤 Start the day with a positive mindset. If you go around thinking Friday the 13th is super unlucky then you're going to read too much into it.

🖤 Accept accidents and maladies for what they are. Just accidents and maladies. Spill coffee on your favourite blouse any other day of the year and you're not going to think the universe is out to get you. Same applies for Friday the 13th.

🖤 Use the affirmation "Friday the 13th will not bring negative energy towards this household/ (or this Witch/person)" and repeat until you feel comfortable.

🖤 Light a white candle for purification (the lill tealights you can get in the pound shop/dollar store are ideal for this. You can go a step further and visualise the light of the candle surrounding you as a buffer against negative energy if that butters your toast.

🖤 Carry out your favourite positivity/purifying spell or ritual. For me it is just making a cup of tea and repeating to myself that "Today will be a positive day!" Which I do every time I make tea and it's something super easy to do. I say it in my head especially in the morning and its a good one for closeted witches.

You could sprinkle a little salt at the entrances to ward of ill intentions, ring a bell or light incense for the same purpose. Whatever feels right for you! There's no wrong way of doing things and every witch/person is different.
