And his son,SULEMAN DAWOOD (2003/4 - Died June 18th 2023,at 19). Victims in the 2023 Titan Submerisble tragedy through gross negligence of OceanGate and it's CEO Stockton Rush,who himself died on the sub.

On this day, 24th January 1788, French ships under the command of Jean-Francois  La Perouse were noticed outside the entrance to Botany Bay,  just two days before Captain Arthur Phillip took formal possession of New South Wales. 

When the First Fleet arrived in Botany Bay on 18 January 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip realised a more suitable site for settlement was needed, and so set sail with a small exploration party on the 21st. On 24 January 1788, two French ships were noticed at the entrance to Botany Bay. They were the L’Astrolabe and La Boussole, under the command of Jean-Francois La Perouse. Phillip had made plans for the entire fleet to move north to Port Jackson, but the presence of the French ships, and the same bad weather that prevented the French from entering Botany Bay, initially caused him to postpone the First Fleet's departure. While Phillip continued ahead to Port Jackson, the 'Supply' and the 'Sirius' were sent to exchange greetings with the French. Captain Watkin Tench, noted the  in his account "A Narrative of the Expedition to Botany Bay": "The astonishment of the French at seeing us, had not equalled that we had experienced, for it appeared, that in the course of their voyage they had touched at Kamschatka, and by that means learnt that our expedition was in contemplation. They dropped anchor the next morning, just as we had got under weigh to work out of the Bay, so that for the present nothing more than salutations could pass between us." Although Phillip and La Perouse maintained cordial relations during the French ships' sojourn, the two did not meet directly: there is strong evidence to suggest Phillip had been a spy and, due to the intense rivalry between the British and the French, preferred that his presence as commander remain undetected. La Perouse and his crew remained camped on the North Shore of Botany Bay for six weeks, where they refitted their ships, built a stockade and planted a garden. The ships La Boussole and L’Astrolabe disappeared in the Pacific after their March 10 departure was observed by lookouts on South Head.  

The Sydney suburb of La Perouse is named after him. A monument was erected on the site La Perouse visited in 1788. "The last place from any news of him was forthcoming". Coins from the reign of Louis XVIII are set within the foundations. The foundation stone was laid on the 6th of September 1825 on land gifted by Governor Brisbane.  Each side of the monument contains a series of plaques.

On this day, 30th May 1801, French mariner Nicolas Baudin arrived at Geographe Bay in Western Australia. 

This bronze gilt medal commemorates the French expedition of the corvettes "Geographe" and "Naturaliste" commanded by Captain Nicolas Baudin to Australia and the Pacific during 1800-1804. This voyage of Baudin produced some significant charting of the Australian coast and intersected with that of Matthew Flinders. There are several references to the existence of such medals on the expedition. For instance, an English captain went aboard the "Geographe" when it was anchored off the coast of Le Havre. Baudin documented the visit in his journal noting, "upon his departure, I begged him to accept a medal struck to commemorate the voyage, he did with pleasure, and then we parted".
