CVTC’s Free Tax Prep Sessions
Tax season is officially upon us! Whether you’re new to preparing your own taxes, or a prepping pro, crunching the numbers can get a little overwhelming. That’s why we’re here! Did you know CVTC’s accounting program offers free tax preparation to students, staff, and community members? Every spring, the accounting program offers their services to those needing a little extra assistance with submitting their taxes. Want more information on this annual event? Keep reading!
Why are these services offered at CVTC?
For those of you that have tried to tackle your taxes on your own, you know it can be a huge undertaking. Not only do these services alleviate the headache of trying to file taxes independently, it gives accounting students the practice they need to enter the working world after graduation. It’s a win-win!
Who is eligible to attend the tax prep sessions?
Anyone! Well, almost anyone. The services are provided free of charge to families and individuals whose total annual income is less than $54,000 per year.
What do attendees have to bring with them?
Please ensure you bring the following information with you:
Proof of identification (photo ID)
Social Security cards for you, your spouse and dependents
An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) assignment letter may be substituted for you, your spouse and your dependents if you do not have a Social Security number
 Birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents on the tax return
Wage and earning statements (Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R,1099-Misc) from all employers
Interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099)
Forms 1095-A, B or C, (Health Insurance Reporting Statements
Health Insurance Exemption Certificate, if received
A copy of last year’s federal and state returns, if available
Proof of bank account routing and account numbers for direct deposit such as a blank check
To file taxes electronically on a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms
Total paid for daycare provider and the daycare provider's tax identifying number such as their social security number or business Employer Identification Number (EIN)
Renter’s Certificate or real estate property tax receipts (for Homestead Credit)
 When are these services available?
Services will be available every Thursday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. starting February 7th through April 11th. The tax prep session will not take place on March 21st, as students will be on spring break. Â The sessions will take place in room 239 of the Business Education Center, and attendees will be assisted in a first come, first serve basis. Appointments cannot be made ahead of time.
Is there anything else I should know before attending?
We ask that you allow at least two hours for your return information to be completed. Sign-up will begin right at 1 p.m. and those arriving too close to 4 p.m. could potentially be turned away due to time restrictions. Additionally, childcare is not provided at the sessions or on the CVTC campus, so please ensure other arrangements are made as needed.
