āIs Haru-chan even home?ā
Harukaās eyes fluttered open at the sound of a familiar voice. Nagisa?
āI donāt think he had any other plans tonight. Let me check my phone,ā another familiar voice said. Haruka recognized it immediately as belonging to Makoto. But why are the two of them here? āI didnāt get a text or call from him saying otherwise,ā he added after a brief pause.
āMakoto-senpai, youāre not Haruka-senpaiās guardian. He could have done something without telling you.ā
Haruka buried his head under his pillow after identifying the third voice as Reiās. He vaguely wondered if he had missed some kind of team meeting; it was fairly common for Makoto and Nagisa to come and go as they pleased, but Rei generally considered it rude to show up uninvited or without notice.
He had almost drifted back into a light sleep when a fourth, painfully recognizable voice spoke: āHe never does anything. Check the bath.ā
Haruka sat up in his bed, very aware of the puzzled expression etched into his face. When was the last time Rin had been in his house? He blinked his eyes several times to clear away the sleep as he heard someone check in his bathroom and yell that he wasnāt there.
For a moment he wondered if this was all some bizarre dream, in which case he would make sure and never go to bed early again if this was the consequence. But when the light flooded into his room followed by a barrage of voices, he knew something like this could only exist in reality.
With a delighted exclamation, Nagisa all but jumped onto Harukaās bed. āHaru-chan, wake up! Weāre having a sleepover!ā
āIsnāt the point to sleep then?ā Haruka murmured, attempting to crawl back under the covers.
āLater,ā he whined. āFor now we watch a movie!ā
Haruka eyed the blond from under his blankets. āAnd who said we could hold this at my house?ā
āAh! Iām sorry, Haruka-senpai! Nagisa-kun made it sound like you knew about this!ā
āHaru-chan never minded before.ā
āNagisa, you really should have asked first,ā Makoto scolded lightly.
āHaru doesnāt care though,ā Rin said. āDo you?ā
Haruka blinked at Rinās tone: one he hadnāt heard since they were young, a combination of smug knowingness that bordered on teasing and genuine asking. He shook his head, because truthfully he didnāt mind. It had been ages since everyone had gotten together purely out of the desire to spend time together. And it has been even longer since any of those times included Rin.
Nagisa cheered at this. āSee, Rei-chan? I told you it would be okay.ā
Rei mumbled something about being a proper house guest, but dropped the topic after that.
āShould we start the movie?ā Makoto suggested.
Nagisa nodded vigorously and held the DVD case up to Harukaās face, only centimeters from his nose. āThis is the one we brought. Rei-chan thought it would suit everyoneās tastes. I wanted to bring a horror movie, butā¦ā
āThe dog movie is a better choice,ā Makoto interjected.
Haruka frowned as he studied the title. āMakoto, you know this isnāt a happy movie, right?ā
āItās not? But Rei saidāā
āItās a well done movie that had very high ratings and it wonāt offend or frightened anyone present. It is a good choice.ā Rei pushed up his glasses as a final punctuation.
āWhatever it is, Iām sure itāll be fine,ā Rin said with a small huff. āAre we going to get started or not?ā
Everyone looked to Haruka, waiting on him to give the okay. When he nodded again, they all scrambled out of his room, talking excitedly about the night ahead.
By the time Haruka dragged himself out of bed and changed into something other than his pajamas, the rest of them had already set up the movie on his television and were sitting, waiting for him. Nagisa lay on his stomach on the floor, a bag of sweets in front of him, which he offered to Haruka as he walked by. Makoto was also on the floor, leading up against the edge of the couch. Rei sat on the couch near Makoto and looked entirely too stiff to be comfortable; Haruka vaguely wondered if Makoto had chosen his particular seat solely for the purpose of comforting the newest addition to their team. And Rin sat on the opposite side of the couch from Rei, looking forcibly relaxed, his arms sprawled out on the back of the couch, his jaw set and eyebrows drawn together.
Haruka sat between the two of them, holding a pillow in his lap, wondering if the tension he was feeling in the air was just in his imagination.
The movie was, as Haruka predicted, a rather sad one. As the credits rolled, Rin excused himself to the restroom and returned with puffy eyes and a small shake in his voice. Nagisa declared that Rei was no longer allowed to select movies, causing Rei to immediately defend his choice.
With a small chuckle, Makoto said, āIt was kind of a sad movie. We should do something fun to take our minds off of it.ā
āSwimming?ā Haruka offered, more as a reflex than an actual conscious suggestion.
Rinās face split into a toothy grin. āYeah, that sounds fun. I mean when was the last time we all swam together just for the fun of it? No competitions, no rivalriesā¦ā
āWhere would we swim though?ā Makoto interjected. Not the ocean, Haruka heard him speak in between his words.
āIwatobiās pool isnāt far,ā Nagisa suggested, a sly smile appearing on his face.
āWith what could only be described as a motherly frown, Makoto sternly said, āAbsolutely not. Itās after hours; weād be trespassing.ā
āWeāve trespassed so much this past year, would one more time really make a difference?ā Rin argued, a familiar twinkle in his sanguine eyes.
āThatās all the more reason not to go! And besides, we donāt have our suits.ā
Rin raised an eyebrow and gave a crooked smile. Nagisa stuck his tongue out playfully and winked. Haruka simply dropped his pants.
āI donāt believe this,ā Makoto said in a tone that bordered on disappointment. āYou guys planned this, didnāt you?ā
āI had no idea this was happening until you guys showed up. Come on, your house is on the way,ā Haruka said, heading for the door in his t-shirt and jammers.
āWhat about Rei? He doesnāt have a ā!ā
āIāll be fine, Makoto-senpai!ā
Makoto let out a defeated sigh, and the five of them left Harukaās house and, after stopping at Makotoās, headed for the Iwatobi High School pool.
āHow are we going to get in?ā Makoto asked as they stood staring at the fence.
As an answer, Rin hooked his foot in one of the holes of the chain link fence. Nagisa followed suit, then Haruka and Rei. Makoto gave one final look of disapproval through the fence before hoisting himself over to join them.
Haruka was the first to enter the pool, diving below the surface and enjoying the feeling of the cool water on his skin. When he came up for air, he floated on his back for a bit with half-lidded eyes, staring up at the stars and the moon. He felt the waves as the others jumped into the pool, and he dove under again.
When his head broke the surface for the second time, he heard Nagisaās laugh, a squeak of surprise from Makoto, and a loud splash. He looked over and caught sight of Rinās face: smiling so brightly and genuinely, just like in elementary school. Haruka then glanced over to the side of the pool and spotted Rei sitting on the side, still fully clothed.
Haruka swam over to where he sat and simply stood there in the pool, watching the other three alongside Rei. He eventually broke the silence by saying, āYou know, you could have borrowed one of my suits.ā
Rei nodded. āI know. But there really should be someone out of the water for safety measures anyway.ā
Another moment of silence passed.
āYouāre part of our team too, you know.ā
Rei opened his mouth in surprise before chuckling lightly. āI know,ā he said, eyes beginning to shine with emotion. āThatās what Nagisa-kun said too when he asked me to come tonight.ā He looked off at the other three. āHe also said that even though Rin-san swims on a different team, heās still part of our team.ā
Haruka stared at them, feeling his face soften into a smile. With a nod to Rei, he dove under once again, this time swimming over to the group. From under the water, he poked at Nagisaās feet, tickled Makotoās calves, and grabbed Rinās ankles to pull him under.
The redheadās expression was a mixture of shock and fury under the water, but when he caught sight of Haruka, it turned into a friendly threat to return the favor, which he did.
After everyoneās muscles grew tired and stomachs began rumbling, they changed into dry clothes and began the walk back to Harukaās house.
āYou know that was the third pool weāve broken into this year?ā
āDonāt remind me.ā
Upon arriving at the house, Haruka headed for the kitchen to prepare a supper, while the other four collapsed on his living room floor, exhausted from the evening. It was almost quiet for a minute, only a low chatter being heard from the other room, until a voice came from the doorway.
āAre you making dinner, Haru-chan?ā
Haruka merely gestured to his apron in answer to Nagisaās question.
The blond smiled and skipped over to where Haruka stood. āAre you having fun?ā he asked.
Haruka thought for a moment before nodding.
āDo you think everyone else is having fun too?ā As Nagisa asked this, he dropped his eyes and became very interested in his fingernail.
A loud round of laughter echoed from the living room. āDoes that answer your question?ā Haruka said.
Nagisa nodded, his usual smile reappearing. āYes, it does! I was worried thereād be some tension with Rei-chan and Rin-chanāāhe paused, eyebrows coming together for a momentāāand even with you. But it seems like everythingās going well.ā
Haruka nodded and sighed a little. āItās nice having everyone together outside of practice, like old times.ā
āLike new old times!ā Nagisa corrected excitedly. āWe have Rin back, but we also have Rei!ā
Haruka smiled softly. āWeāre not reliving old memories, weāre making new ones.ā
āExactly!ā Nagisa cheered. After a moment of only the sizzling food being heard in the room, he eyed the cooking, bouncing lightly on the balls of his feet. āWhat are you makā?ā
āMackerel.ā
āOf course,ā he sighed. āIāll go let the others know.ā Before leaving the kitchen, he turned back and looked sincerely at Haruka. āThank you.ā
Haruka was slightly taken aback at his thanks. What was Nagisa thanking him for? For using his house? For having fun with everyone? For being his teammate? Maybe it was everything all rolled into one, but regardless it made Haruka sharply turn his attention back to his cooking, slightly embarrassed.
Despite the chorus of groans at Nagisaās announcement of the menu, everyone quickly ate up the mackerel Haruka had prepared, causing him to contemplate fixing more. Between yawns and laughter, the boys shared stories, memories of the past, far off plans for the future, secret hopes, and wildest dreams. Without even changing into pajamas, the five fell asleep on the floor there, unable to keep their eyes open any longer. Makoto lay against the couch in an upright position, snoring lightly. Rin used one of Makotoās thighs as a pillow, arms wrapped around his jacket. Rei lay curled up under Rinās legs, as if they were a blanket covering him. Nagisa was sprawled out on his back in the middle of the floor, clutching one of the sleeves of Rinās jacket and his feet underneath Reiās body to keep them warm. And Haruka use Makotoās other leg as a pillow, his four best friends being his last sight before falling into a warm, comforting sleep.

The laptop was slammed shut. Ā Ā
āāRin!āā Gou screamed at the top of her lungs, turning around on her office chair to face the door that separated the room that she was currently using from her brothersā one. āāHave you turned off the Wi-fi again?āā Ā Ā Ā
āāYeah.āā a dull voice answered her through the wall. āāI heard that you were watching those stupid DIY Magic videos, so I stepped in.āā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā
Before Gou could even throw a single curse word at her brother, the said man opened the door and walked in, stirring some kind of watery dough with a repetitive waves of his finger. The bowl that he was using was shaking uncontrollably, and Gou had a weird feeling that her brother was really angry (the bowl could be easily replaced, but the amount of power that Rin was putting into simple mixing was getting uncomfortable.) Ā Ā Ā Ā
āāOkay, maybe I was watching some videos on YouTube, and even If I was, then what?āā Gou huffed, and crossed her arms on her chest. Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā
Rin sat down on the couch, his left hand still spinning circles over the bowl. The mass inside splashed inside, dangerously reaching the brim. Ā Ā Ā Ā
āāListen, sis. This stopped being funny a long time ago.āā he huffed. āāI told you many times, that, as a water mage you cannot perform fire arts. Why canāt you just understand?āā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā
Gou looked away. āāHaru can do it. And he isnāt even an elemental mage. Whatās wrong with being ambitious?āā she shot him a glare. āāItās not like I donāt care about the consequences.. but I at least want to tryā¦āā Ā Ā Ā Ā
āāGou.āā Ā Ā Ā Ā
Rinās voice was sharp, as he looked her straight into the eyes, but his gaze melted as soon as he noticed the determined gaze his sister was holding. āāI just donāt want you to get hurt.āāGou turned her eyes away. Ā Ā Ā Ā
āāAs a water mage, attempting to use fire can be-āā āāFatal. Yes, I know.āāThe mass inside the bowl splashed out, and landed on the black leather of the couch. Great, now itās gonna taste like vanilla and tears. Or whatever. Ā Ā Ā
āāWhy are you not taking this seriously, Gou!āā Rin finally snapped, setting the bowl aside aggressively. āāIām talking about your life, dumbass! What would I do If you were gone? Do you want to leave me alone again, but this time forever?āāĀ
āāWhen exactly did I leave you alone ?!āā Ā Ā Ā Ā
āāOh, I donāt know, when you broke the family tradition and left for the Iwatobi guild?āā Ā Ā Ā Ā
Gou stood up, the chair behind her slammed into the ground, one of the arm holders breaking off and flying off into the dark abyss below the desk. Ā Ā Ā Ā
āāThis is going too far, Rin! We talked about this countless times, and mom accepted my choice!āā Ā Ā Ā
Ā āāMom accepted? But what about our father?!āā Rin shouted back, but he instantly regretted his words as he saw tears forming in his sister'sā eyes.Ā
āāOh, God, Iām sorry.āāGou stayed silent. Was it the shame? Or regret?āāIām sorry, ok? I didnāt mean to bring up dad⦠Hey, look at me.āā Rin kneeled in front of her, putting the bowl aside quickly. āāI got too far. Sorry.āā
āāI just wanted to achieve something.āā Gou finally spoke up. āāHaru can summon elements. Rei gives them shape. Nagisa speed. Makoto power. And who I am compared to that? A bystander looking over them. Even my water powers are weakest in the family.āā She was whispering faster and faster, and the tears from her eyes finally spilled.
Ā Suddenly, a familiar warmth surrounded her, and before she realised, that familiar warmth spoke back to her worries.āāYou know that you donāt have to do anything special.āā he whispered, patting her hair. āāIwatobi accepted you. Do you know how prestigious this guild is?āā
āāBut my powersā¦āā
āāHey, you dork. At least you are better than aunt Kuroha.āā
Yup. Aunt Kuroha canāt even make a teardrop rise from the tabletop.
āāGosh diddly. You really canāt say anything helpful, can you?āā Gou cracked a small smile, and returned the hug.
āāCan you promise me not to try the fire magic again?āā Rin asked, looking his sister into the eyes.
āāI canāt promise to watch YouTube though.āā
āāYou little nut.āā Rin laughedĀ āāNo porn though.āā
This is my FreeSecretSanta2015 gift for @otp-tears
Itās so late that Iām not even going to give any excuses, just an āIām sorryā. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The clock ticked.
He placed a pot on the stove.
Outside, a car was just passing by the building.
Inside, sweat was gathering on his forehead as food sizzled on the stove.
He gulped.
Another minute passed.
Did he have time to get dressed? - He was on schedule.
Turn off a burner.
Pour the boiling water in the sink and strain the food.
Another minute passed - the clock ticking would remind him that his flatmate would soon get home.
He needed to get changed.
There was still a pot on the fire; the oven was still on, too.
Five more minutes - Makoto was always on time.
Was everything else ready?
The house was clean; The food still had a few minutes.
Was the table set? - yeah, everything was in order.
He still needed to get changed; Another minute passed.
He stirred in the last pot. Did his hair sit ok? He checked in the mirror across the hallway; he was fine.
Another minute and the fire was turned off. The oven would be on for another 40 minutes.
A run down the hallway later and he was getting dressed.
Makoto was on time as usual - the front door clicked open, and with that the spell that seemed to have fallen over the previously silent flat was broken.
Sousuke could breathe again; His body stopped tingling and sounds werenāt muffled any more, although his heart was still beating like crazy.
āSousuke?ā his name resounded in such a familiar way through the place he had come to call home, Sousuke could almost forget his nerves for a moment.
āYeh, Iām here.ā The male answered, making his way down the hall once again. He took a couple of breaths, bracing himself for what was coming before entering the main hallway-
Just in time for his body to collide with an unexpected mass of weight. Or two, as he discovered upon looking down, only for his eyes to come upon two children; a girl and a boy, clearly twins.
āHello!ā
āAre you really big brotherās boyfriend?ā
āDo you live here with him?ā
āYouāre really together? Like, you kiss and hold hands?ā Sousuke could only blink at the sudden attention, and before he had even fully processed, he could already feel his face heating up at the bluntness of the questions - true to form, bluntness only specific to children.
āRen, Ran!ā Makoto called, and Sousuke was relieved to notice the same redness on his cheeks as well. āYou canāt ask something like that.ā
And as Makoto was taking the two children off of his lover, Sousuke found that he couldnāt hold back a small laugh at the otherās embarrassment, the tension he had been feeling breaking with that little interaction.
āHow about we try that again, huh?ā He chuckled, looking in turn at the kids, and at the parents respectively. āIām Yamazaki Sousuke, Makotoās boyfriend; itās nice to finally meet you.ā He noticed Makoto smiling from the corner of his eye, and felt a bit of that tension building once again as he awaited a reaction; he subtly grabbed his loverās hand, feeling the reassuring grip as he stood there under the inspection of both adults.
It was a few long seconds for the male before someone broke it.
āWell, that wonāt do.ā Makotoās mother frowned, and for a terrible second Sousuke could feel his heart stopping. āWith all youāve been talking of him, you never told us how handsome he was, Makoto!ā The woman chuckled, walking closer in order to inspect the boy. āItās wonderful to meet you, Yamazaki-kun.ā She finally said, and Sousuke had to take in a deep breath, still frozen in place.
That was when the last person in the room decided to cut in, chuckling himself. āPlease, Do not take my wife so seriously. She was merely making a joke.ā
āI was most certainly not. Such a handsome young man, Makotoās descriptions never did him justice. I will not stand by such injustice to Yamazaki-kun-ā
And Sousuke laughed. He laughed at the silly statement, laughed with relief, laughed at himself for being so afraid when Makotoās parents were obviously so nice. āPlease, just Sousuke is fine.ā He said through his chuckles, meeting the eyes of Makoto, who was smiling at him with the same relief Sousuke was feeling reflected in his eyes.
-
Neither one of the boys would forget it, obviously. That horrible night at the end of their first year, when Makoto had opened the door to a rain-soaked Sousuke whose face reflected nothing but desperation and whose eyes were bloodshot from holding back tears.
Makoto had immediately pulled his boyfriend inside, seating him down on the couch as he went to Sousukeās room. The male had been alone for a couple of minutes, sitting in silence as h drowned in a sort of misery he wouldnāt have been able to share with others. When Makoto had returned, no words had been spoken. The male had silently given him him a change of clothes and left him to take a shower; no questions had been asked, and Sousuke had been grateful for that fact.
He had spent half an hour in that shower, finding himself unable to wash away the bitterness and disappointment he was feeling.
Once he was out of the shower, there was already a plate of food -microwaved leftovers from the last meal he had cooked- waiting on the table for him. It had been a serving of food and a cup of tea later that Sousuke had finally broken the silence between them, voice cracking on the very first syllable, and began the retelling of the events that had occurred only previously that evening - going home for a visit to his parents, telling them that he was in a relationship, confessing that it was with another man- and how at that moment, it had all gone wrong. Things had been said that Sousuke would rather not recall even to this day, all leading down to the highlight of that evening.
āDonāt you dare step foot into our house again until you decide to be normal again.ā
Those had been the last words his Father had addressed Sousuke as he had kicked his own son out of the house.
That night, they had slept holding each other tightly, and ever since then the two had been sharing a single bed, taking reassurance in the closeness.
-
It was an unspoken fact between them, how both boys had held a certain anxiety about this evening, a fear of having those same events repeated with Makotoās family. Thus it was a great weight lifted off of both their shoulders, the easy acceptance of the Tachibana family. Their grip on each otherās hands tightened for a second before letting go, Makoto instead picking up his little sister.
āCome on, how about we go to the living room? We better not let the food run cold. We can talk more there.ā He suggested, turning to his parents who were both smiling at them.
āYou go, Makoto.ā Sousuke interjected. āeverything is set, Iāll just bring the food over.ā A small smile was set on his lips as he was looking his lover in the eyes.
āYes, letās go, letās go! You always said how good his food is!ā One of the twins, the boy, exclaimed as he jumped up and down, causing a full new blush to blossom on Makotoās face.
āRen!ā The male whined, Ā Sousuke chuckling at his loverās embarrassment.
āWell, Iām glad to hear that youāve been bragging with me. Go in, Iāll be right there.ā He grinned, ruffling Renās hair as he passed the boy on his way to the kitchen.
It was once everything was set and the food was on the table, steaming from heat and enticing everyone with itās mind numbing flavour and smell that Sousuke took his seat next to Makoto, in the living room. The space was lightly decorated with typical christmas decorations in warm colors, and the tree raining gold light over the room added to the warm atmosphere; they even had mistletoe hanging to one side of the room.
As he sat down, Sousuke leaned over to leave a kiss on his loverās forehead, still somewhat swept away in the earlier relief.was It only after that that he realised his action, thanking all the gods that the twins were too busy deciding what food to start with to notice the two college students. On the other hand, Makotoās parents were giving the two a look that was meant to communicate that they had definitely noticed.
āUh, Ren, Ran, donāt eat too much! We still have the main course and dessert!ā Makoto hurried to change the subject, not very subtle but successful none-the-less. The parents decided to let it slide in favour of the food that was barely waiting for them to dig in.
As he was placing food on his own plate, Sousuke found himself revelling in the light interaction and easy acceptance that had come with the Tachibana family. Never had he been faced with such openness; the reality he lived in had always been one of strict standards and high expectations; one of everything or nothing. The easy interaction had been one of the first things to draw him towards Makoto just like it had Rin in the past, and to find such a warm space with this family put him in a place where he wouldnāt know how to act; the cold formality of his own family had been easy to deal with. He would always know exactly what to say and how to act, what was expected of him. This was different, and it was as exhilarating as it was frightful.
Conversation was light that evening; topics came easy, and laughter flowed. Formality was forgotten, and more than ever Sousuke felt like he could actually learn to belong there.
āI must say,ā Meiko, for Sousuke learned that to be the womanās name, commented at one point, āYou boys did a wonderful job of cleaning up this place. I admit that I was surprised.ā At which moment the two looked at each other, laughing awkwardly at the memory of that morning.
-
Text books and papers covered every flat surface in the apartment. If the kitchen table was filled with books on āchild psychologyā, the couch was covered with papers about āthe physics behind the front crawlā and āthe right movement for correct swimmingā, topped off with notebooks filled with notes about āhow to work your muscles to a proper level before you take on professional swimmingā and āgroups of muscles involved in swilling backstroke: a biological guideā.
In between the chaos of butchered trees were cups half-filled with day-old coffee and a stack of plates with crumbs on them; that is not to mention the sticky notes with quick reminders and the images sticked just above the tv, on the fridge, above the stove and just about everywhere else to be sure that important facts would be stuck forever in the heads of the two boys.
Needless to say, upon waking up that morning, it was panic that had kept them moving enough to tidy everything up and stack every last notebook on the floor of their shared room, unpin every image of stick figures in awkward positions or highlights of muscle groups off the walls and stuffed under their bed.
Cleaning up had been an odd ordeal, to say the least, and including the washing of floors and dusting of shelves, it had taken just until Makoto had to leave to get his parents, meaning that for most of the day, Sousuke hadnāt had the chance to think in depth about what was about to happen.
It had been just as he was about tp leave that Makoto had turned over to him, a serious expression on his usually calm face, and taken his lover into an embrace. āItās going to be ok. ā he had whispered, pinpointing the exact moment when nerves had began taking over Sousuke. āYouāll see, itās going to turn out fine, trust me.ā Sousuke had nodded, in an attempt to reassure Makoto more than anything āYeahā¦ā he had answered. āI know.ā He had lied, and they both knew it, but Makoto had let it go and given him a single, lingering kiss before leaving.
-
āI need to go take the chicken out of the oven; Iāll be right back.ā Sousuke announced suddenly, standing up without another word and leaving the room. He needed to clear his head for a bit.
The male spent a few minutes more than necessary in the kitchen, gulping down a glass of water and taking a few deep breaths. The fear he had been holding onto for the last few weeks was finally leaving his body as the current situation was dawning on him, but the traces were still eating him on the inside; fear that Makotoās parents wouldnāt approve of their relationship, far that they would force Makoto to chose between them. He knew that his lover cared a great deal for his family, and frankly, Sousuke was afraid because he knew that, were he in the situation to pick, Makoto would always choose his family. He had been afraid that he would lose Makoto, the one pillar of stability that had showed up in his life while he had been oh so lost after high school, when he had had no idea where he would go next in life.
-
Meeting Makoto that one evening while he was walking aimlessly around had been nothing short of a blessing. It had started raining outside and he had run into the closest available space, coincidentally a coffee shop. āSousuke?ā He had heard the surprised voice, and upon turning around, found himself meeting the pools of comfort that were Makotoās eyes. They had talked that evening as they waited for the rain to ease up, and Makoto had gone through no small amount of shock as he had found out that Sousuke had been ready to leave swimming behind entirely. It had only been later that same week that Sousuke had thought back on that fateful meeting. At that time, he had remembered Makoto mentioning his will to become a swimming coach for children, and found himself remembering the time he had been training Nitori in high school.
It was fateās weird sense of humour that had made it so that on his very first lecture that following fall, Makoto had been there. He supposed things could have turned out worse; He was happy in a relationship with the person who had unknowingly helped Sousuke find a new sense of purpose in life, so yeah, sousuke would say that he had turned out pretty fine.
-
He was carrying the plate with the main course out of the kitchen when he heard it; he wasnāt sure exactly how it had happened that the conversation in the living room had progressed into Makoto talking to his parents about Sousukeās poor sense of direction; he blushed, remembering the exact event Makoto was referring to - it had, after all, been only two weeks prior.
-
Well into their second year at college, Makoto had left early that morning to talk to the teacher about something before class. Sousuke had thought nothing of it until he found himself in a corridor he had never seen before, a good half hour before the lecture had started.
āWhere are you?! (ć»oć»)ā Makoto had texted him, no doubt noticing his loverās absence, but Sousuke was reluctant to let the other know that he was lost, so he opted to find his way on his own.
That was that he had told himself of course, until another half an hour and two panicked messages from Makoto later he had slumped down onto the floor of the hallway, finally giving up and texting his lover back. āI think I got lostā¦ā he finally answered, knowing that Makoto would come searching for him.
-
āAs soon as I left the lecture hall,ā Makotoās voice, filled with mirth, broke through his thoughts at that time, āthe first thing I saw was Sousuke sitting on the floor right across the hall from me.ā
Of course Sousuke would have loved to laugh along with everyone, were he not the very protagonist of the ridicule. Instead he found his face getting even hotter as he walked into the living room, placing the food in the middle of the table without saying a word, suddenly finding the shade of the carpet to be highly intriguing.
Obviously Ā even as he sat down the snickering around him hadnāt subsided, now fueled by his obvious discomfort at the situation. The male refused to meet anyoneās eyes for obvious reasons.
It was after several more seconds that Makoto finally turned to his lover and decided to spare him, grabbing the maleās hand and leaning over to give him a small kiss on the cheek. Sousuke, ignoring the giggles Ren and Ran didnāt even try to hide, finally looked his lover in the eyes. Makotoās message hadnāt been spoken out loud, but it was there - āyou may be a dork, but I love just as wellā. Well, perhaps Makoto would have worded it differently, but that was the general idea.
Finally deciding to let go of his indignation, Sousuke angled his body close to Makotoās and looked up completely, the two leaning onto each other now as they sat, and was a bit surprised to find his loverās parents smiling gently at them after their little display.
Wanting desperately to change the subject and cut through the awkwardness, Sousuke, much to Makotoās amusement, turned his attention to the wonderful course now sitting in the middle of the table, offering to cut up the meat for everyone, and thankfully soon enough they had all returned to eating happily.
āItās really a relief that you are such a wonderful cook, Sousuke-kun.ā Meiko Tachibana commented at a point. āMakoto is an awful cook so itās nice to know that he isnāt eating takeout and instant meals all the time. Please continue to take care of him from now on.ā The woman smiled earnestly, and Sousuke was once again hit by the wave of unfamiliar but not unwelcome warmth and acceptance from the Tachibana family.
Rather than giving a sappy response or becoming sentimental though, Sousuke chose to instead look at the male in question with a smirk, delighted at his flustered Makoto was just from his motherās comment.
āOh, I know that already; Remembers my last exam sessions?ā he directed the last question to his lover, who called his name in protest because really, did they have to go and tease him like that?
Sousuke only laughed at his reaction. āIt was sweet, really.ā the remark was directed at the two adults, remembering how during his studying frenzy, Makoto had interrupted him for a break and offered to help him cook something. O course Sousuke had still been unaware at the time, but it was not half an hour later that one of their pots was officially rendered unusable, a wall donned a long black stripe that fanned out at the top from where it had been smoked by the burning pot, an otherwise perfect gravy was thrown away because of the unsalvageable seasoning, and Makoto had received a lifetime ban from the shared kitchen.
As he finished reminiscing, Sousuke leaned over to leave a kiss on his loverās forehead. āHey, as far as Iām concerned, that just one of your quirks. Besides. That was payback for the earlier thing.ā He added deviously, and Makoto spluttered back.
āI-I wasnāt trying to make fun of you!ā He exclaimed truthfully in defense, causing another laugh from Sousuke.
āHey, hey itās fine. I know.ā He chuckled, leaving a peck on Makotoās lips.
āEep!ā Both college students immediately faced the source of the sound, having disregarded for a second that there were still two children in the room, currently covering their eyes from the display. They both blushed, but smiled at each other none-the-less.
āCome on, kids, letās finish this food before it goes cold, hu?ā He offered, smoothly turning things around as the children easily shifted their attention to the feast before them.
Under the table, he felt Makoto holding his hand, and looked around at the people around him. The two children so easy to get along with, the parents, so warm and kind, and Makoto. There was nothing really right to say there, to really portray why the other was so important to him but the feeling of home he felt when around Makoto was unmistakeable.
This was truly where he belonged; where he could be really happy once again. And that was enough for now.
Hi!! Iām your Free! Secret Santa! :D Here is your MakoHaru fanart with Cat!Haru! <3
Iām so sorry this is so late :( Things get so hectic around this time of year!
I know itās winter but I just love spring themes the best, hehe...
I also apologize for the messiness of it all. The original drawing is inked and the colors are digital (I couldnāt make any layers so all the colors are literally on top of the drawing). Iām also not so great at color schemes but hopefully I can create something for you again when Iāve improved!
I had such a great time doing this for you! I havenāt been able to draw in such a long time because of university so I was delighted and honored to make this for you. I really hope you like it!
(I used @medibangpaint for the digital watercolor! ^_^)

Word Count: 4,787
Summary:Ā Makoto Tachibana is known as the bravest fireman in his squad even though he doesnāt like to brag but when he fails to save two young children from an schoolhouse fire, his life falls apart. Can he live with the guilt? Or will he crumble?
ā
āTachibana-san, I never knew you were so strong!ā said one of his comrades as they peeled off their soot covered clothing.
āNo noā¦it was just adrenaline. Iām sure you couldāve done the same.ā Makoto assured. āKato-san, youāve been at this much longer than I have.ā
Kato-san laughed heartily as he pulled his shirt over his head. āIām not nearly strong enough to lift a whole half wall off of someone inside a burning building!ā The thought must have made him happy because he began to laugh again after speaking.
Makoto smiled at Katoās happiness as the man walked out the door. He continued to get his own clothing and belongings together. It had been a long 36 hour shift and he was excited to have a full 2 days off coming up. Makoto had plans to go visit his family at home since he hadnāt seen them in nearly three months. The life of a fireman was not an easy one but Makoto couldnāt think of anything else he wanted to do. He liked the idea of protecting the gift of life that everyone was given at birth. Makoto knew it was childish to consider, but he always thought this was his calling. Nothing else wouldāve made him happy.
As Makoto walked out of the fire station, his phone suddenly began to ring and vibrate. It startled him to say the least. He flipped open to view the screen: āMatsuoka Rin callingā it read and Makoto answered it with a smile.
āHello?ā
āDamn it, Makoto, does it always take you that long to answer?ā
āI just finished my 36 hour shift, Rin. The phone actually startled me at first.ā Makoto explained. āIām surprised to hear from you. I thought you said you and Sousuke were going out of the country.ā
Makoto remembered saying goodbye to both Rin and Sousuke nearly a week before. The two were off to enjoy a vacation in Australia since they had both been recently promoted in the police academy. Makoto didnāt expect to hear from Rin so soon.
āYeah, we are still in Australia but I got some free time and figured Iād ring you. Sousuke is out like a light right now and Iām bored as fuck.ā Rin explained. āGuess Iāve got good timing if you just got off your shift.ā
āYes Iām heading home to see my family. Itās been quite a while since I last visited and Iāve missed them.ā Makoto said as he walked past the stores on the busy street. He was nearly back to his small apartment. āIāve got to change and take a bath but afterwards Iām catching a train back to Iwatobi.ā
āItās good that youāre taking time for yourself for once Makoto. Youāve always been the team mom of your comrades at the fire house.ā Rin commented. āSometimes youāve gotta look out for yourself, you know.ā
Makoto sighed, his mouth forming into a smile. āYes yes I know. Ohā¦ā a beep was heard from Makotoās phone and he looked at the screen to see a new voice mail fromā¦his boss! āHey Rin Iām sorry but Iāve got to check this voice mail I just received. Itās from Luca-san.ā
āYour boss? He hardly ever calls you so it must be important. Just donāt forget to tell him you really need this vacation alright?ā Rin reminded in a harsh tone. āI know youāre their best firefighter but sometimes even the best need a break.ā
āThanks Rin. Iāll call you later okay?ā Makoto said goodbye to the red haired boy and hung up.
As he entered his small, dark apartment, he began to listen to the voice mail left by his boss.
āMakoto-kun! I really need you right now! Thereās a large fire north of the city at an elementary school! Iāve got everyone here already but we could really use your help! Please get here as quickly as you can. Please!ā the message ended abruptly.
āOh noā¦this is horrible!ā Makoto jumped into action, grabbing his keys and his fireman jacket before heading out the door. As he ran down the steps as quickly as he could, he dialed a friend. āRei! Are you at home right now?ā
āThis is very abrupt, Makoto-senpai, but yes I am. Whatās wrong? You sound upset?ā Rei asked of him.
āI need you to drive me to the elementary school north of town as soon as possible. Iāll explain when you get here.ā Makoto said as he ran as quickly as he could towards Reiās home. Rei only lived a few blocks from him.
āOkay, Iāll meet you on the side of the road!ā Rei said and hung up.
Makoto ran like his life depended on it. Makoto and and few of his fellow firefighters had spoken to the students at this school. They had taught the children how to safely escape the school in case of a fire. Never once did Makoto think that they would be in danger just a few short days after their visit.
A honking horn jolted Makoto out of his memories as he looked up to see Rei parked alongside the road. Makoto picked up speed and jumped in. He pointed Rei in the direction toward the school and the scientist took off.
āIām sorry if I interrupted you working on anything important, Rei.ā Makoto said, holding on to the door with white knuckled hands.
āItās okay, Makoto-senpai. Your job is much more dire than mine is at the moment.ā Rei responded, not taking his eyes off the road.
As the vehicle came over the hill, Makotoās eyes were attracted to the smoke billowing in the air from a small building. It was the elementary school. Makoto had been hoping he was wrongā¦.but too right he was. Makoto saw his comrades already fighting the blaze and several others bringing children out of the smoke filled school.
He leaped out of the car, shouting a quick thank you to Rei over his shoulder before quickening his pace to where he saw his boss.
āTachibana! Thank god youāre here. I need you in your suit quickly!ā Luca pointed at the extra suit in the back seat of the fire engine. āKato and Reiji are up on the second floor and canāt get past the door. We need your strength to get past!ā Luca shouted over all the noise.
By the time Luca had finished his sentence, Makoto was already pulling on his fire proof helmet. His adrenaline had helped him get ready quicker than normal.
āYes sir. Iām on my way.ā Makoto said firmly as he took off for the front door.
Makoto braced himself for the heat he was sure to feel as he approached the building. No matter how many times Makoto had seen a fire and been in a burning building, he never got used to it. It was always terrifying and seemed like something from another world. The way the fire engulfed everythingā¦it was horrible and yet also beautiful in the same breath. Makoto pushed his way through the building, spying the stairs after about 5 minutes. The stairs were a challenge as some of them had already burned away. As he managed to see the top of the stairs after what felt like an eternity, Makoto saw Kato and Reiji standing near a door with a battering ram. They reared back and swung the ram but with no avail. The door didnāt budge.
āTachibana-san! You made it!ā Kato called out as Makoto walked up next to him. āThe ceiling has collapsed a bit on the other side of this door. Reiji figured the ram would help but itās just not strong enough.ā
āTry one more time. Youāre weakening it with each swing.ā Makoto suggested. āAlways try once more.ā He placed his hands on the back of the battering ram to help. āOn my countā¦ā
āOneā¦.ā
āTwoā¦.ā
āThree!ā
The firemen pulled back and pushed the ram as hard as physically possible and sure enough the door collapsed but only partially at the bottom. Makoto instantly fell to the floor and crawled underneath the hole which was just big enough for him to fit.
āI can hold up the wall! Go get the people inside!ā Makoto shouted. He could feel the fire around him beginning to go out of control. He put all of his strength and lifted the wall off of the door, allowing Kato and Reiji to make their way inside.
However, as soon as Makoto motioned them to come inside, the floor below him gave way. Makoto felt a shout come from his throat as he fell fast downward. Kato and Reiji acted quickly, each one catching him by one hand. Makotoās head was knocked for a loop and has he looked down he could see the two kids Kato and Reiji had been trying to save.
āKato-san! Reiji-san! Please let me go! Let me drop down! I can get to the kids!ā Makoto pleaded. The two boys were looking up at him, tears streaming down their face. They were holding onto each other.
āTachibana you know we canāt do that! Youāll never make it out!ā Kato shouted back. āThat floor is hollowed out because of the fire!ā
Makoto felt tears prick at the corner of his eyes as he looked at the kids but cleared it up. He had to be strong for them.
āLet me go! Now. Please!ā Makoto begged. He met eyes with Kato and his partner stared back. āPleaseā¦ā his voice cracked.
āAgh fine! But donāt you dare die Tachibana!ā Kato shouted as he and Reiji both let go.
Makoto braced himself for the landing on the concrete floor below. The impact was harsh but Makoto rolled forward a bit to lessen the pain. After he adjusted to the darker area with the fire not too far behind, he could see the kids shaking in terror just a few feet from him.
āItās alright. Iām gonna help you out of here.ā Makoto assured them, speaking in the most calm voice he could. Of course, getting out of this basement with the fire covering the only exit left little to the imagination in terms of getting out, but Makoto knew he was determined to save the two kids.
āCome here.ā Makoto motioned them and they complied. He took off his jacket and placed it over the two of them. It was more than large enough to protect them both from the flames. āAre you ready? Weāre going to run, okay?ā
The two boys both nodded and held hands. The taller boy grabbed Makotoās hand. Makoto jumped in surprise at how small and cold he was.
At the count of three, they took off, making their way through the billowing smoke coming from underneath the closed basement door. Makoto reared back his foot and kicked the entry open. Flames immediately were pulled towards them and Makoto protected the children with his body. He could feel the fire burning his skin and his lungs. It was the worst he had ever felt in his life. He ignored his pain. The children were screaming behind him and the taller boyās hand had tightened the grip on Makotoās. They continued to walk through the fire, a small path laid out from a higher power Makoto figured, creating a way to get to the exit.
Suddenly the building began to shake and Makoto realized the second story was getting too heavy from the water being used to put out the fire. It was going to collapse and it was gonna happen soon.
And as Makoto took one last look at the children, and turned to try to get out of the home, he suddenly blacked out.
****
āHey hey! Makoto-chan is awake! Heās awake everyone!!ā
The voice piercing through the air Makoto instantly recognized as Nagisa, another of his high school friends. Makoto felt like he was under tons of pounds of bricks. It was so loud and he couldnāt really see anything though he had his eyes opened. The light was so bright; it overwhelmed his senses.
āNagisa-kun youāre in a hospital.ā Rei said, almost as if he was speaking to a child. āThereās no need for shouting here.ā
As Makotoās sight finally adjusted to the light, he could see four people standing in front of him.
āGeez, Makoto, you gave us a heart attack.ā Rin groaned with a hint of sarcasm. āHow many times have I told you to think of yourself first?ā
āRinā¦ā Makoto struggled, looking at the red haired man. He didnāt recognize his own voice. It was so gruff and dry. āW-what happened? Iā¦ā He had no recent memories. Everything was black.
Nagisa grabbed Makotoās hand, gently and with more care this time. āYou donāt remember anything Makoto-chan?ā
Makoto tried to shake his head but realized he couldnāt move. There was a brace around his neck. The boy hadnāt even realized everything that was on him. IV meds, a brace on both of his arms, and a brace on his right knee, most of his face covered in bandagesā¦.what was going on?
āYou donāt remember the fire at the elementary school?ā Sousuke questioned. Makoto focused more and saw the stern faced man leaning near the window with his arms crossed. āYou tried to save some kids and as you were on your way out, the second story collapsed inward.ā Rin was suddenly at Sousukeās side.
āShut up Sousuke, he doesnāt need to know now.ā Rin hissed, obviously annoyed.
Sousuke stood and walked past him. āUnfortunately he does need to know and hiding it from him only makes it worse.ā The man, still dressed in his policeman uniform, came up next to Makoto. In a fashion unlike his usual self, put his hand on top of Makotoās. āMakotoā¦those kids died in that day. The wall from the floor above landed on them and crushed them. Along with your right hand and your right knee.ā
***
Makoto had been allowed to leave the hospital after about a two months. He was almost fully healed other than his hand, his knee, and some burns on his face. But he was living in a fog. The fire station had let him off to recover completely and hadnāt required him to come back in any specific time. His mother, father, and two younger siblings had come to visit him, but had already returned to Iwatobi.
The boy stared at himself in the mirror, trying to tie his tie with only one hand but it hadnāt been working. Makoto threw the tie to the floor in disgust and looked back into the mirror. Dark black bags under his eyes stood out and he just looked exhausted. Sleep had all but deserted him. The nightmares kept him awake every night. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw those two children. He knew he wouldnāt be able to forgive himself for what happened.
Makoto adjusted his tux. It was stiff and form fitting. Makoto hated it but knew he needed to do this. The wake for the two boys was today, just a mere mile from his home. It wouldnāt be right for him not to go. He had forced himself out of bed for the first time in a long time. Makoto made his way out of his home and pulled on his jacket outside. It was warm but Makoto wanted to cover himself. He didnāt want to be recognized there.
The walk was surprisingly short and the line was long. The wake was being held in the parentsā home. After waiting in line for nearly 20 minutes, Makoto was near the front. All he wanted to do was pay his respects and leave. Maybe his heart would lighten a bit and he could move on. That was all he hoped for.
āItās youā¦ā
Makoto heard a femaleās voice behind him. It sounded imposing but soft at the same time.
āWHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?!ā The same voice screeched through the otherwise quiet night. People began gasping as Makoto turned around to see a long brown haired woman looking at him. Her eyes were full of tears and she was completely irate. āYou, the so called hero of our cityā¦the best fireman who ever worked for the station, let my children die!ā Makotoās eyes widen with the realization of who he was looking at.
It was the two boysā mother.
āNoā¦Iā¦didnātā¦Iā¦.ā Makoto couldnāt form a coherent sentence.
āGive me back my children!!ā The woman screamed so loudly her voice cracked. She grabbed Makoto violently on his injured arm, yanking it as hard as she could. āGive my children back to me!! They shouldnāt have had to die!ā She began sobbing uncontrollably. āYou shouldāve died instead of my children!!ā
Makoto suddenly felt ringing in his ears. All sound disappeared. It was as if his soul was leaving his body. Around him other people began pulling the childrenās mother off of him. His hand was bleeding from where she had pulled off his bandages. Makoto tried to block out everythingā¦he tried so hard to focus but too much was happening he couldnāt take it anymore.
He screamed.
So loudly did he scream.
The crowd stared at him and even the mother looked up at him.
Within in a instant, Makoto took off running, holding his injured arm to his body. He ran and ran, not knowing where he was going and ignoring the pain of his right leg. He wanted to disappear. He wanted to change everything that had happened in the past three months. All he wanted to do was rewind time and just erase everything so he could bring back those two children. Makotoās breath was heavy and he was winded by the time he stopped running. He hadnāt been paying attention at all. As he adjusted to his surroundings, he realized he was on the peak over looking the ocean. The area was so quiet and so peaceful in comparison to where he had just left. Makoto could hear the waves clashing with the rocks below.
āThis worldā¦ā Makoto said out loud, his voice weak and dry. āā¦.is so rotten.ā Makoto looked up at the sky to see a full moon. The stars were glowing brightly and he could hear birds in the trees behind him. āBut itās also so beautiful.ā
Before Makoto realized it, he was standing just on the edge of the cliff looking down at the rocks and waves.
āYou shouldāve died instead of my children!ā
The motherās voice echoed in his mind. She wasnāt wrong. Makoto felt he shouldāve tried harder. He didnāt and those children paid with their lives.
As the wind blew, Makoto let himself fall over the cliff. His ears were filled with the sound of rushing air and eventually he felt the harsh impact from the water. It was as if his arm was splitting off but Makoto didnāt care. Nothing mattered.
This is what he deserved.
**
Sometimes people get lost
and they feel like all is gone
their purpose
their reason for life
but the world is always beautiful
if you just keep looking
youāll see the world in your eyes
not everyone can be the hero
let your heart rest
let your heart rest
my dear
Makoto had never heard such a beautiful voice before. It was the voice of an angel. Clear and crisp just like water. He felt sand underneath him and his eyes felt heavy. With a bit of strain, he opened his eyes to see baby blue ones staring right back at him.
āAhh!ā he screamed, startled. His body had enough adrenaline to push away from the face.
As Makoto stared, he couldnāt help but think how beautiful thisā¦person looked. It was a human until just below his stomach and then it looked likeā¦a mermaid? He had striking features: dark black hair, bright blue eyes (which were as clear as the ocean Makoto noted), and his scales on his tail that shoned so brilliantly under the full moon light. It was almost as if he was made of tiny diamond crystals in the way the water sparkled on his pale skin.
āYou are alive.ā said the mermaid, his voice a bit deeper than Makoto thought it would be. āI saw you jump, you know. Why did you do that?ā He was very blunt with his questions. The mermaid started to come towards him.
āWait, wait.ā Makoto put his hands out in front of him and the creature stopped. āI-I donātā¦uhā¦ā he glanced off to the side. āWhat are you?ā Makoto abruptly asked, trying to change the topic of conversation the mermaid started.
āIām a half breed man.ā He said as a matter of factly. His voice didnāt change tone. āIām half fish, half man. I can choose to change of my own accord.ā
The explanation went way over Makotoās head and he began to laugh. āItās a dream. Rightā¦Iāve drowned and now Iām dreaming and this is the hell Iāve been given.ā Makoto couldnāt stop his laughter, even when it turned to small sobs and crying.
āNanase Haruka.ā
Makoto looked up at the half breed man and sniffed. āWhat?ā
āMy name is Nanase Haruka.ā Haruka crawled over towards him and this time Makoto didnāt move. āI saved you from the waves. It wasnāt easy. The rocks you fell around create a whirlpool and I was almost pulled in too.ā As he explained what had happened, Makoto became furious.
āWhy did you save me, Nanase?!ā Makoto barked, his voice raising in anger. āI donāt deserve to live. I let those children dieā¦ā
āDid you really though?ā Haruka asked abruptly, not even letting Makoto finish his thought.
Makoto glared at him. āDid I really what?ā
Haruka laid back on the sand as the water lapped up around them. The tide was coming in and the water level was rising. āDid you really let those children die?ā Haruka placed an emphasis on the word 'letā. āIām pretty sure the hero of the fire station wouldnāt let children die in a fire.ā He closed his eyes but continued to talk. āDonāt let the words of others get to you. People in sorrow often say things they donāt mean.ā
Makoto gasped. āHow do you know about-?ā
Haruka placed a finger on the firemanās lips, quieting him. āYou talked a lot before you regained consciousness. Including what the woman said to you. Not to mentionā¦I said I was a human as well as a fish.ā Haruka looked up into Makotoās eyes gently. āI saw you thereā¦at the wake. I didnāt think that Iād see you again, much less in the ocean.ā He sighed. āDo you really think you deserve to die?ā
Makoto shook his head. āā¦.no.ā he mumbled, nearly inaudible.
āSay it again.ā Haruka demanded, his voice firm.
āNo!ā Makoto yelled, feeling tears roll down his face. āI want to live! I want to help other people! I want to make up for my error in judgment.ā Makoto felt the air escape his lungs, his throat burning. āIām sorry! Iām so so sorry! Iām sorry you died and I lived! Iām sorry!ā Makoto screamed as loud as he could, and he felt amazing. He had finally gotten everything off his chest and for the first time in two weeks, he felt like he could breathe.
Suddenly he felt an hand on his shoulder and looked to see Haruka smiling next to him. It was faint, but for the first time Makoto saw what looked like happiness on Harukaās face.
āNanaseā¦.Iā¦I will keep moving on and I will make the most of my life to protect those I can and to keep the memory alive of those who I unfortunately cannot save.ā Makoto said, his voice steady and strong.
Haruka nodded. āGood. I must go. Iām sorry but the morning is coming and I canāt stay here.ā
Makoto felt a pining in his heart. He didnāt want Haruka to leave. āWhat? Noā¦Iā¦Iād like to stay here with you. Just for a little longer.ā
āYouāll see me again.ā Haruka promised. He held his hand out to Makoto and Makoto took his hand in his. āYou just wonāt expect it.ā
The fireman expected Haruka to feel slimy and cold, as he was a fish, but all Makoto felt was warmth. Before Makoto realized it, Haruka had let go and slipped back into the ocean.
The only sound around now was the waves.
**
āTachibana!! Are you coming?ā Kato shouted up the stairs into the fire station locker room. āWeāre gonna go grab a bite to eat at the new cafe across town!ā
It had been nearly a month since Makoto met Haruka on the beach that late nightā¦or so he had remembered. Makoto had chalked it up to a very vivid dream. Ever since then he had tried to find Haruka in the city. There were plenty of look alikes but none of them were the Haruka he knew. His Harukaā¦the one who had saved him that night in the ocean. So Makoto had decided to move on and tat it was just a dream. There was no way a half fish half man really existed anyway.
Makoto, Kato, and Reiji all walked together, seeing the Grand Opening sign for the cafe, called 'Saba-chanā. Makoto thought the name was awkward since it was a coffee shop but he had just decided to ignore it. After a short wait in line, the three were sat at a small table just outside the building in an umbrella covered patio.
āIām going to go to the restroom real quick.ā Makoto said as he sat down his bag in his seat. āIāll be right back. I just want water to drink.ā
Makoto slipped past a lot of people before finding the hallway leading into the bathroom. As he went to enter, another man came out, pushing past him.
āIām sorry I-ā Makoto apologized before meeting eyes with the man, awkwardly close. Blue eyes met green and in an instant, Makoto felt a familiarity in those baby blue eyes that were as clear as the ocean. āNanase!ā
The man hadnāt stopped and continued walking past him and out another door that had been in the hallway. It was an exit that had led outside the building. Makoto couldnāt help himself. He opened the door with more haste than he originally intended. After his eyes adjusted to the sunlight, he saw Haruka standing before him, wearing the uniform of the cafe.
āNanaseā¦ā Makoto breathed. āYouā¦you are real.ā
Haruka frowned. āThatās the first thing you say to me? I saved your life from drowning and helped you get over a huge part of your life and the first thing you say to me is that⦠Iām real?ā
Makoto laughed. āI know! I justā¦itās been so long and I just thought thatā¦I really thought it had been a dream! I really did!ā He walked down the small steps to stand in front of Haruka. Makoto hesitated before he brought his hand up to Harukaās cheek. He saw a faint blush appear on the dark haired boyās face. āYou knowā¦I never got to thank you for saving me that day. You didnāt have toā¦but you did.ā
Haruka tried to look away. āI didnāt do it so you couldā¦flirt with me.ā
Makoto was taken aback by Harukaās blunt statement. āWell, I guess it just fell that way. So thank you. Thank you for saving me that night, Haruka.ā
Haruka was put off by the sound of his first name. āDonāt call me that so formallyā¦ā
Makoto smiled, pulling Harukaās face back towards him. āOkay thenā¦how about Haru-chan?ā
The cafe worker couldnāt help but blush again. āOh stop trying to be cute.ā
Haruka leaned up to Makoto and gently pressed his lips toward the fireman. The two shared a short gentle kiss, Makotoās hand holding Harukaās neck gently. Haruka had placed his hands on Makotoās strong back, grabbing it firmly. As they came apart, the two smiled and couldnāt help but laugh at the situation.
āI amā¦in love with a fish.ā Makoto said under his breath. Haruka hadnāt heard him since he was too busy laughing. āBut thatās okayā¦.heās my fish.ā Makoto smiled, pulling Haruka into a hug.
The life of a half-breed and a fireman began in that alleyway.
Thanks to @dailyau and @tarssusfour for the prompt: āI spilled a milkshake all over you and you apologized and offered to buy me a new one even though itās my fault AUā
@retrolizard, hereās your gift! Happy holidays and sorry itās late!
December 20, 2014, 12:10 pm Japan time.
Sousuke, waiting near the food courtās Chick-Fil-A, looked over his last-minute Christmas shopping one more time. OK, got fuzzy socks for Mom, new goggles for Rin, a joystick mouse for Dad...now where can I buy moisturizer?
āGrilled chicken sandwich and a vanilla milkshake?ā the lady behind the pickup counter called.
āMine,ā said Sousuke, and walked up to get his lunch.Ā āThank you, maāam.ā He was going to regret eating all that sugar when he got back to the pool, he could tell.
āHappy holidays,ā she smiled.
Sousuke nodded.Ā āYou too.ā He turned away and walked toward the nearest empty table on the edge of the food court.
āWatch out for the kid!ā someone yelled.
Sousuke looked around, and then a giggling small child ran into his right leg with an audible thud. He flailed briefly, trying to keep his balance and not drop his sandwich. Then, of course, his shoulder flared up and his milkshake went flying right into a brown-haired guyās shirt.Ā āOh, no...ā
āI told you to be more careful, Ran,ā said the brown-haired guy. āIām so sorry. Can I buy you a new milkshake to make up for that? Please, itās the least I can do.ā
āUh...ā said Sousuke.Ā āI think Iāll just get a water bottle from a vending machine someplace. The less sugar messing up my rhythm the better, yeah?ā

Sousuke nodded.Ā āIām thinking of transferring to Samezuka next year. I hear theyāre especially tough to beat. How about you?ā
The other guy smiled.Ā āIām at Iwatobi right now. My nameās Makoto Tachibana.ā
Sousuke vaguely recognized that name. Wasnāt that one of Rinās old swim club buddies?
āIām Sousuke. And I think Iāll let you buy me that milkshake after all. The Chick-Fil-Aās over here...ā
