Mark Frechette

Mark Frechette führte ein Leben wie aus einem Film. Der unbekannte Laiendarsteller soll 1968 bei einem Wutanfall auf offener Straße entdeckt worden sein. Man lud ihn zum Casting ein und machte ihn zum Hauptdarsteller in Zabriskie Point, Michelangelo Antonioni's erster US-amerikanischer Produktion. Seine Gage ließ der Schauspieler einer religiös-politischen Kommune des Musikers Mel Lyman zukommen. Drei Jahre nach seinem Engagement in Zabriskie Point versuchte sich Frechette an einem Banküberfall. Die Aktion, mit der er ein politisches Zeichen setzen wollte, schlug fehl. Er beschrieb den Überfall später wie folgt: “We just reached the point where all that the three of us really wanted to do was hold up a bank. It would be like a direct attack on everything that is choking this country to death.” Ein Freund Frechette’s starb bei dem Überfall, er selbst sollte für 15 Jahre inhaftiert werden und versank in Depressionen. Nach nur zwei Jahren Haft wurde die Leiche des damals 27-jährigen Schauspielers im Trainingsraum gefunden. Das Gewicht einer Langhantel hatte ihn erstickt.
