Fracing (spelled "Fracking" by the media)
I rarely get into this kind of thing, but since I'm in the O&G business, I get aggravated by being constantly demonized unjustly: 1.) Fracing does not pollute drinking water. The vertical distance between drinkable water reservoirs and petroleum reservoirs is usually more than a mile. It would be impossible to get the amount of horsepower necessary to make fractures that long. 2.) Fracing does not cause earthquakes. Salt water disposal near major fault lines, however, does. (Salt water comes up with petroleum, and something needs to be done with it.) That can be fixed by disposing of salt water elsewhere. It would cost more in trucking to do that, but it's probably still necessary. These two points have been proven over and over again, but the anti-fracing zealots love to have a cause, and they don't care if they use pseudoscience to do it.
More than half of voters in the Southern Tier and the Catskills/Hudson valley regions are opposed to allowing the natural-gas extraction process hyrdrofracking to move forward, a Time Warner Cable News/Siena College poll found. Those results are sure to give more fuel to the ardent opposition to hydrofracking among environmental groups.
“We’ve seen these results for years now that people in the areas that would be most affected by the impacts of hydraulic fracturing are opposed and that seems to be growing. We’ve seen that with other states that have rushed ahead with hydrofracking the water is polluted, the economic impacts have not been beneficial and peoples’ public health is suffering,” said Elizabeth Moran of the Environmental Advocates of New York.

Study Shows Methane Levels At Fracking Sites Up To 1000 Times Higher Than EPA Estimates (VIDEO)
On April 14, 2014 the National Academy of Sciences published the results of a study which shows that actual methane emissions around gas fracking sites are between 100 and 1,000 times higher than the EPA estimates. The measurements, recorded by researchers studying methane emissions in Pennsylvania’s Marcellus shale region, were taken over a two day period in June 2012.
