A BRIEF HISTORY: On June 28, 1969, New York City Police raided the Stonewall Inn. What was intended to be a routine abuse of power became the act that spurred an uprising. The Stonewall Inn was a gay bar and a well-known safe haven for the LGBT community. Tired of their brutal harassment, the patrons fought back, and the protest continues nearly fifty years later. To commemorate the Stonewall Uprising, June was named Pride Month, after the first Gay Pride Parade of 1970.
AROUND CROWN HEIGHTS Since 1996, Brooklyn Pride made its celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community a local affair. Naturally, some of the festivities spill into Crown Heights. Partnering with local organizations, our own businesses place the spotlight on members of the LGBTQIA+ community and host educational, celebratory, or a mix of both, events that give visibility to so many of our neighbors, friends, and family. CROWN HEIGHTS (COMMUNITY WIDE) Starting June 28th, the Brooklyn Pride Parade will pass through the neighborhood to kick off the celebration. Come to the parade, and stay for the vendors and stay even longer for the talent from right in our own backyard. You never know, that annoying roommate who uses all the hot water might have some pipes! We’ll be out there vending, too.
#VIEWZ For the entire week, #VIEWZ (yes, the hashtag is part of the brand!) will host LGBTQ MOVIE MARATHON Perfect excuse to rewatch Portrait of a Lady on Fire for the fifth time, right? Even if you’re on a rooftop pouring garlic ranch onto cauliflower popcorn.
HOME BASE, FIDELITY RECORDS After getting a reluctant Rob on board, our very own best boss in the world agreed to let us have FACE-PAINTING! With a five-dollar donation. All of the proceeds from face-painting as well as 50% of sales will go toward local non-profits for trans youth.
METHOD BURGER You can always count on Method to force you to be social. And this is literally the place to meet friends or, who knows, find a date. Method Burger’s hosting a SPEED SOCIAL where you get a pin for whether you’re looking for friendship or romance ( or both! ), and a pin for wherever you fall under the rainbow umbrella! ( If you participate, you will be messaged with 3 matches on June 30th! )
ALLIED BAR Once night fall, Allied’s shifting its gears a little bit. Last I heard, they’re still having open mic nights, but revamped to include a POETRY SLAM. oh, and drinks will be discounted for anyone who needs liquid courage!
THE FLOWER VAN We’re all a little old for prom, but The Flower Van’s got you covered with DIY PRIDE CORSAGES to wear for the festival and free beer all day! If pins or necklaces aren’t your style, try opting for a custom corsage. Plus, he’s giving the proceeds out to organizations for our own LGBTQ community. Hurry before all the good flowers are gone!
