It’s been about a year since I, Sarah J. Lambert of Austin Texas, decided that I would like to be an entrepreneur. About a year ago, I read a 2007 book called “The Four Hour Work Week”, which changed my life. 

OK, maybe a slight exaggeration. I can be a bit histrionic. I read it, and imagined how it would change my life. 

Let’s rewind. I was in college when this book came out, and was therefore indisposed for extraneous reading, but I have a distinct memory of it being described to me. I was in the student apartment kitchen, slicing sweet peppers for our favorite, fajitas, when my roommate told me about this “ridiculous” book. 

I had to set the knife down on the cutting board and ask her to repeat. 

“The guy just hired people from other countries to do all his work for him, and then went on vacations or whatever.”

OK, fast forward 12 years. Try not to get whiplash. I read the book and I thought, there is so much more to this book. I tried to talk to people about it 12 years later. They vaguely recalled having read the book when it was on the NYT bestseller list.  

It seems that everyone had read this book. But when I asked, “Did you try it?” 

No, they hadn’t tried any of the radical ideas laid forth in the book. This struck me as...promising. I’ll explain. 

OK, explaining...In one chapter of his groundbreaking book, the author, Timothy Ferriss, describes how he held a contest for students. Whichever student got in touch with the most celebrities over a short period of time would get a free trip to anywhere they chose. 

The first year of the contest, not a single student got in touch with a single celebrity. They all lost because no one tried. 

So, in realizing that it seemed people had read Ferriss’ book, then set it aside as an amusing lark, I saw an edge. I saw an advantage for me. What if I were the one who did try? Who did give it her all? Could his methods work? And what could be the harm in trying?

I’ve been in affiliate marketing for the last 18 months.  Before that I was working in different advertising agencies doing SEO and a bit of media buying.

The fact that you can work pretty much where you want to.  It is what Tim Ferris calls the 4-hour week lifestyle.  I just wanted to work less and make more money.

I didn’t like the company ambience where I was working.  I don’t want to be part of the corporate world.  I want to be my own boss.

Work where I wanted to and when I wanted to.

When I was researching affiliate marketing, it provided everything I was looking for: Freedom, Money and being my own boss.

What was your biggest problem or frustration starting off?

I wasn’t as tech savvy as I needed to be.  This held me back.  I didn’t understand tracking to well.

Also, the amount of information to understand, but it was more a matter of focus.  I had a big problem with focus because in the affiliate market there is so much information available.

There are so many people promoting their system or method and at some point, you are overloaded.  You don’t know where to go or what strategy to follow.

Why did you decide to work with John Crestani?

He had a broader knowledge of marketing in general.  Most others are specialized in just one way to make money.

I wanted to learn all the various ways of advertising online like Adwords, Facebook, media buying etc.  I figured that I could learn more from you and you had more to offer.

John was one of those marketers who were very low key and casual.  He seemed to be very honest and many training videos on every subject.  Also, the numbers and proof spoke for themselves.

How do you feel about working with John now?

It’s one of the best decisions I ever made. (Bright smile) My personal life changed when I decided to join John as a student.  That’s when my business kicked off for me.  Going through the training, I started to get better at affiliate marketing and make some money.  It’s been a year that I don’t have a 9 to 5 job and I’m making pretty good money now.

Who would you say John’s program is good for?

Carlos Valiente: I would say both beginners and advanced.  There is enough information for a beginner to get started fast and start making some money.  At the same time, there is enough information to help advanced affiliates get to that next level.

What is it about John’s training style that makes sense for you?

What I liked a lot is to see you go step-by-step setting up a campaign.  You showed us different angles to write ads.  It is easy to learn because it’s not scripted.  You are just showing us how to do it and talking to us personally.

How did the first month go?

I was quite anxious, and I made some mistakes. I wasn’t paying enough attention to details.

It changed when John and I (Carlos Valiente) had a call and he made it very clear that I had to shift my mindset.  Basically, that meant I was still trying to get rich quick.  I wasn’t looking at it like a serious business.  Once we had that call, the next month I was no longer dabbling in it but fully focused.

Once you started doing campaigns over and over, did it become easier over time?

Yes, it has become easier and I’m doing it consistently every month.

How much profit have you made in this last year?

Around $130,000.

How has your life changed for the better by working with John Crestani (other than just the money)?

I don’t have to worry as much about money as I did.  For investment purposes I’m getting ready to buy a house which I would not have been able to do. In terms of fun, I’ve been able to take more vacations. Also, now that I have more money, I’m able to put it to work as well.  I like to invest in real estate.  But before I didn’t have any opportunity to do that because I didn’t have enough capital.  I’m overall living a better life.

I still want to make more money but I’m less anxious about my basic needs.

What has been the most important lesson you have learned working with John?

Everything you do has a process to learn. If you are looking to succeed at something you have to follow the process.  When I’m preparing a campaign there is a checklist to follow.  If you shortcut that process you will just cheat yourself.

Carlos Valiente, what would be your advice to others who are ‘sitting on the fence’ about working with John?

I’d say you have to look at where you are now and where you want to be.  And also, how long it’s going to take to get there if you don’t get help from someone who has done it already.  Time is more important than money.  How much will it cost you if you don’t get a mentor to share his knowledge with you.  For me, the investment was well worth it.  I was looking for a way to shortcut my time investment.

For beginners or for advanced marketers it should be a no-brainer to jump on John’s training.
