The author, Christopher Bronke is an English teacher in Illinois with extensive experience with Common Core State Standards and various other education activities. His article addresses the SAMR model which is a way to conceptualize technology in education, illustrated below:

The SAMR model is inherently pro-technology and explains concisely the most compelling reasons for bringing technology into the classroom.

However, he says that this model is too vague, and the word “task” specifically needed to be specified. He created his own model, which he called the 4 P’s:

Students use technology in the classroom in one of four ways; they either 1) create products, 2) enhance their productivity, 3) acquire proficiency, or 4) progress learning. Bronke, in my opinion, is absolutely right. These 4 categories pretty much hit the nail on the head.

Students (and teachers) use technology to create products, whether it be presentations, programs (coding), or the like in order to present information.

Students that have access to technology are likely to be more productive; even simply being able to type papers rather than handwrite them is a pro.

Students learn technology and can become proficient in things like coding, IT systems, etc. which opens doors into fast-growing industries.

Teachers use technology in order to track students’ progress. Things like IXLs or Khan Academy show students and teachers alike lists of proficiencies and how many they have mastered in an easy way.
