Confused by the different foundation coverages, let me break it down for you
(text taken from my foundation advice guide)
• Full Coverage – I would never use full coverage foundations unless I was doing scarring or birthmarks etc but even then I would firstly opt for a sheerer foundation then grab my concealers to add more coverage, this option looks a lot more natural.
• Medium – This is good for anyone who has uneven skin, blemishes and redness. The pigments in these foundations will cover around 60-70% of the area. Again get your concealers to finish off the areas. As these foundations do not have 100% pigment in you can build them up to a natural finish, but just be careful how much as if you are also using concealer you do not want to much on the skin.
• Light/Sheer – Tinted Moisturiser or BB Creams work well for this. Good for anyone with subtle blemish prone skin. This is my preferred choice of foundations. They give a natural effect to the skin whilst adding a healthy glow.
• None/Invisible – Tinted Moisturiser or Primer alone, these foundations contain very little pigment so great for someone with perfect skin. I hope this helps you when you shop for foundations Other things to remember - NEVER MATCH YOUR FOUNDATION TO YOUR HANDS OR NECKLINE/JAW (YOUR JAW AREA BLOCKS OUT ANY SUN FROM GETTING TO THE NECK). ALWAYS MATCH TO THE CHEST AREA. YOU WILL NEED YOUR FACE AND BODY TO BE THE SAME COLOUR. Some popular finishes to the skin are as follows:
Matt – Be careful with this as it can make the face look flat. I would opt for semi matt if you are going down that route, the face needs life.
Velvety/semi matt – I love this finish, choose a powder which has a velvet finish and you will get a gorgeous satin finish to the skin.
Luminous/glowing – This is a very popular choice for many, probably not for those with excessive oily skin though. Mix your highlighter with the foundation for an all over healthy glow, or apply it before foundation to certain areas of the face
High shine – Mostly used for editorials, I would not recommend this finish
AND TO FINISH - WHEN IN A STORE, ALWAYS WALK TO DAYLIGHT TO CHECK THE SHADE, AS THOSE STORE LIGHTS PUT A YELLOW/ORANGE TINT TO THE COLOURS. You will be surprised at how different they look.
Ever got home and your foundation is to dark, or yellow this is why. Do not let the store assistant match it to your face BIG NO NO NO
