âYou could become a brain surgeon or you could be a bathroom cleaner â it doesnât matter. Once you come into my home ... youâre my kid for life"
âGuy Bryant knows the foster care system well. The 61-year-old has cared for more than 50 young men over the last 12 years. Heâs also worked as a community coordinator at New York Cityâs Administration for Childrenâs Services for 32 years, providing services for young adults who have aged out of the foster care system.
Having fostered more than 50 young adults, Bryant has found that he gains their trust by spending more time with them and ultimately getting to know them better. He plans fishing expeditions a few times a year and sometimes cooks meals with the young men, developing bonds over time.
Bryant is a foster parent through the New York agency Rising Ground. The organization has supported children in need since 1831, first as an orphanage and then as a family foster care program contracted by the city. The agency works with birth parents, connecting them to resources such as mental health offerings, drug rehabilitation, housing and job support, with the ultimate goal of reunifying families.
âThe difficult thing about building trust is their past interactions with adults. If I can get you to engage in conversation with me about how youâre feeling and whatâs going on, then that right there, my job is done. They constantly need to be reinforced that âI am here. I am going to do what I say.â My kids will tell you whatever I say, Iâm going to do for you. I always do it because I donât want you to look at me like one of those adults who let you down,â Bryant said.
Bryant has zero plans of retiring anytime soon, especially when he sees so many children still in need of a place to call their own.
âThe Mr. Bryant approach is I love you regardless,â he said. âYou could become a brain surgeon or you could be a bathroom cleaner â it doesnât matter. Once you come into my home and youâve been with me and youâve been here, youâre my kid for life. Thatâs my approach. Youâll always have a bed to come to, a shower to take â youâll always be able to come home. This is home.â
Okay so a lot of the Klance parent stuff Iâve seen has been Keith not really wanting kids but Lance wanting all the kids. This is cute but imagine this:
Lance loves his family and wouldnât trade them for the world, he also loves kids he thinks theyâre great, but he doesnât want any. Lance grew up in a big family and knows the struggles the parents and the kids have to endure to keep the family afloat and never wants to put anyone in that position, especially his family.
Keith isnât a touchy feely person, heâs also not very social, but he wants to like collect all the orphans. While heâs not much of a kid person, he wants to save kids in the same situation he was before they end up angsty and distanced like him.
Due to this, the two agree to become foster parents, mainly taking in lgbtq+ teens but accepting everyone just the same, and end up adopting a 14 year old gay boy named Lucas and his 12 year old little sister, Lilly, who heâd before lost in the system.
This was just supposed to be a general thought but it turned into a prompt-
