In sickness and in health, no matter their age, breed, no matter what they need - extensive vetting, surgeries - they can rest assured that once they are part of the SSR family, we will care for them and fulfill our mission of finding them a lifetime companion who will provide them eternal unconditional love. But sometimes life throws us a curve ball…
It is with a heavy heart that we update our SSR family & friends on one very special dog, Johnny Cash. Johnny, aka Cash, has been diagnosed with renal dysplasia. He was born with kidneys that do not work to the best of their ability. Sadly, our vet has informed us that his kidneys will continue to lose function and he may only have about a year to live.
Cash doesn’t know that he’s sick and he's as happy and goofy as he’s always been. He isn’t in any pain and just needs to pee more than the average dog. He is on special low protein food and medication.
We are seeking a hospice foster who will give Cash the greatest gift possible - love and a home for the remainder of his life. We're looking for someone who is home due to the frequency of his need to urinate and ideally has a yard. Cash is great with cats, dogs and kids. SSR will continue to pay for all of Cash’s vetting, food and medication.

Bosslady's younger sister declared our home to be 'A Repository for Crippled and Decrepit Animals,' and while she is quite correct, people usually don't clock us that fast.
How does having a fospice dog work?
Basically instead of fostering to be adopting the dog or cat just lives out their life. We keep them happy and comfortable for as long as possible while making sure they have good quality of life. They stay with us until it's their time to pass.
The reason it's "fospice" is because the rescue maintains ownership of the dog. He's never legally "mine". The rescue helps with vet bills/end of life care.
We're still not 100% sure this dog will be fospice, but it looks like cancer. Waiting for surgery and tests 😔

Rumple has been in the shelter system for 781 days, and that is simply too long. At 12 years old, his mobility is declining significantly and he's experiencing some health complications that come with age. His body is aging, but he is mentally quite youthful and excitable (Rumple *loves* snacks!). Though we make every effort to ensure he is comfortable and happy at our shelter, it's just not an ideal situation for Rumple. So we're putting the call out: Do you or someone you know want to take Rumple into your home? The main requirement is a home that can be accessed without stairs, and we'll provide everything else he needs. In his advanced age, he has actually taken to liking many other dogs, so he no longer needs to be the only dog in the home! We love this boy so much, and we know you do, too. He deserves to be curled up in a home, on a comfy bed, not in a shelter cabin. We don't know how much longer he has on this earth, but we're committed to making sure it's in a loving fospice home.
