@forward-always-forward (Mon-el)
The days after she helped Mon-el escape into space were a blur when she would look back on them later. Â She still went to Catco, still fought with a smile on her face. Still wrote articles, still participated in Game Nights, but the spark in her eyes was gone. Her world had stopped turning while everyone else's went on. And she had to be a participant in everyone else's world. But it was hard to find the drive to do any of those things. It was even hard to find the desire to eat some days. Â She was always exhausted, both mentally and physically. She was nauseated, she wasn't sleeping well. Â Even her beloved pot stickers couldn't ease the sickness--in fact they almost made it worse.Â
It was only Clark and Lois visited two months after the Daxamite invasion when Kara knew what was wrong with her. The blonde frowned when Clark pulled her outside onto the fire escape one night after dinner--Kara barely picking at it. "Kara," The elder cousin had murmured, wrapping an arm around the blonde, "Why didn't you tell me?"
The blonde tilted her head at him, eyebrows raised, "Tell you what?"Â
"That you're--" Clark's eyes widened with the realization, "You don't know?"
"Kara....you're pregnant. I can hear the second heartbeat."
Kara froze, the mug she had been holding dropped from her hands--it would have shattered, had Clark's hand not darted out and caught it. "...what?" Came her strangled reply. Suddenly, she felt lightheaded, her knees felt like they were going to crumble under her. Blindly, she reached for her cousin, and the elder Kryptonian quickly helped the blonde sit against the wall. "I...thought we couldn't--" Â It was well known that even among Kryptonians--Clark had been the only naturally conceived baby in centuries.
"With humans, Kara. Lois can't handle a kryptonian baby--if it kicked, it would break her ribs."
"....But with me, its the opposite." Â Kara sighed in realization, "And since Daxam and Krypton are genetically the same.." Â Clark nodded.Â
There was a beat of silence as Kara focused, now that she was listening for it--she could definitely hear the second heartbeat that was faster than hers and Clarkâs. Suddenly, Kara's world started spinning again--though not at full speed, she had something more to focus on. There would always be a piece of her that had broken when Mon-el left, but now she had a piece of him with her. Â The next months and years as Kara's pregnancy progressed were intentionally well-documented. She wanted an archive of everything--should they find a way to bring Mon-el back to earth.
It had been nearly four years since the Daxamite invasion. It had been almost three and a half since Kara's life changed for the better. It was three and a half years since Mik-El had entered the world just as the sun rose at 5:43 am.Â
Kara was shook out of her thoughts as a rocket colided with her chest--a rocket known as Mikayla Matthews-Danvers. "Hey Starshine," The blonde laughed, smoothing down her daughter's brunette hair. It was a color that was a perfect mix of Kara's blonde, and Mon-el's dark brunette. A perfect mix. That was the best description of Mikayla. A perfect mix of Kara and Mon-el. Â Mon-el's eyes, Kara's nose and cheeks. His jaw. Â She was perfect.Â
"Hi Mama," Â Kara grinned, and shifted her daughter to her hip. "Do you have your backpack to go visit uncle Clark?"
"Uh-huh!"
"Awesome! Then after I get back from working with Auntie Alex, I'll come pick you up and we'll have pizza and-"
"Potstickers!" Mikayla interrupted, giving Kara a large grin that the mother matched. "Mhm! That's right, potstickers!"
Securing the Supergirl themed book bag on her daughter's shoulders, Kara took to the air and quickly flew to Metropolis, dropping Mikayla off with her cousin before landing at the DEO.
"Alex?" She called walking down the steps, looking for her sister before she froze, seeing a figure standing in the bullpen. Â "I..." Her blue eyes widened and her mouth dropped open. "Mon-el?" His name fell from her lips like a whispered prayer as she stared at the figure's back, both willing and dreading him to turn around.
