My opinion on: KLANCE
Ah, yes. The very well-known, gay ship between the characters Lance McClain and Keith Kogane of Dreamwork’s Voltron Legendary Defender. Who doesn’t ship it?? That’s the problem with this ship. However, I digress; Klance is a cute ship, and I confess that I personally ship Klance myself. But, truth be told, should Klance go as far as being canon in Voltron??
First of all, I’d heard about the little “incident” with the creators of VLD threatening to cancel the show, because of Klancers (or Klance Shippers) threatening the creators of VLD to make Klance canon. That appalled me. If this information is, in fact, true, I am very disappointed in you, fellow Klancers. That is not okay. That was VERY immature of you to do that.
Fans of certain-but not all- fandoms, for instance, the one I am currently conversing about, have these certain flaws that make the show/content go horribly wrong, make it unoriginal, or go a totally different direction that the audience wants it to go, rather than the original planned concept, when the said content is made from someone’s canon ideas.
For instance, if you created content and gained fans and they threatened you to change a certain character, or canonize a certains ship when YOU were the one who created/owned that said content, how would you feel? How would you feel if someone hated a certain character of yours because of a flaw they weren’t satisfied with, or hated the way the characters interacted with each other? How would you feel if your content was turned into something unoriginal, and your renewed conflict only satisfied your audience?
Content is supposed to be enjoyed the way it is. Creators have a choice in what they do with their content. The generation of the older Voltron before our generation is different. These people probably recreated VLD to renew the legacy of Voltron, and to make it feasible for our generation to enjoy and relate to.
Which brings me back to what I said before. Klance is one of the most popular ships of VLD. A lot of people expect it to be canon. But, did anyone ever think about asking Lauren or Joaquim, or any of the other creators how they felt about canonizing Klance? I feel like canonizing Klance is a little too soon. If Klance is to become canon, shouldn’t there be a little bit more character development between Lance and Keith before they actually get together? Shouldn’t the creators have their say in this?
Then again, stories need that structure for everything to work together. If Klance becomes canon, it should be after the other characters get a chance in the spotlight, and Lance and Keith further develop as characters.
Yes, season 4 is coming out this Friday, and we have a lot we still don't know about. VLD fans; We just have to wait and see what happens. Hopefully season 4 is the best we've ever seen, and that the content stays original, and that we don't have future conflicts and fights between Klancers, and other fans. Let's make this fandom heard; that we are all a huge Voltron family. Thank you.
