“You were in love with Katniss in Twelve, real or not real?” He hisses as he balls his hands into fists.

I swallow the bite of sausage in my mouth and glance at him. He’s eyeing me with a strange expression, unsure if I’m really there perhaps? I know sometimes he feels like he can’t tell if he is in a Capitol created dream or if he’s living in this real nightmare.

“Yeah, I was.” I agree quietly. Katniss is lying on a settee in the back corner, seemingly asleep. I watch the rise and fall of her breaths. Her back is to us, her arms hugging her bent up knees.

 “Not anymore?” Peeta’s voice beats a skeptical tone.

I shake my head, pulling my eyes away from Katniss’ sleeping form and settle Peeta with a pensive gaze. We watch each other for a moment, before he breaks the silence again.

“Because of Madge Undersee?” Peeta asks softly.

I blink at him in shock and then find myself nodding, “Yeah, she crept up on me.”

Peeta nods absently in assent, “She has a way of hiding in plain sight.”

The more time I spend with him, even in this insane place, the more I realize that he and I could have been good friends in another life. His gaze drifts to a spot on the wall, his eyes glazing slightly as he slips into another memory.

“Do you still love Katniss?” I don’t know why I ask, but it does draw him back to reality. I chew on another bland sausage, watching his face contort as he thinks about what I’ve asked him.

“I don’t know. I don’t know much of anything anymore,” he says honestly.

He places the empty can on a glass table beside the chair. “I must have loved her a lot more than they thought; they couldn’t get rid of all of the feelings and memories. The fake ones are fuzzy, too bright, and too hollow sometimes.”
