Today in #history: On this day, June 8th, 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt signed into law the Antiquities Act of 1906. The law gives the President of the United States the authority, by presidential proclamation, to create national monuments from federal lands in order to protect significant natural, cultural, or scientific features. President Theodore Roosevelt established the first national monument, Devils Tower in Wyoming, on September 24, 1906. The act has been used to designate sites such as Statue of Liberty National Monument, Fort Pulaski National Monument, Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, and sites that have been upgraded to National Parks, including Death Valley National Park and Joshua Tree National Park. @fortpulaskinps on Cockspur Island, near Savannah, #Georgia. This fort was built by the United States between 1829 and 1847 at a cost of almost $1,000,000. The fort's walls average between five and eleven feet thick of solid brick; around 25,000,000 bricks were used. Most of the bricks were made locally in Savannah but other bricks were shipped from Maryland and Virginia. The only battle at Fort Pulaski occurred on April 10 and 11, 1862 between Union forces on Tybee Island and Confederate troops inside the fort. During the battle, the fort fell after Union bombardment opened wide gaps in the walls and heavily damaged other sections the outer walls. Union troops occupied Fort Pulaski from April, 1862 until the end of the Civil War. After 1862, the fort was used as a military and political prison. On October 15, 1924 the War Department declared Fort Pulaski a National Monument through a presidential proclamation from Calvin Coolidge. The monument was transferred from the War Department to the @nationalparkservice on August 10, 1933. At that time repairs on the abandoned and dilapidated started, when members of the Civilian Conservation Corps arrived. #tombstonetuesday The grave of Lieutenant Robert Rowan (d. March 3, 1800) at the Fort Pulaski Cemetery, part of Fort Pulaski National Monument on Cockspur Island near Savannah, #Georgia. Rowan is the earliest burial at the site. His is one of two marked graves in the cemetery. Rowan was an officer stationed at Fort Greene (Fort Greene, built in 1794, was located on Cockspur Island and was destroyed by a hurricane in 1804).
