Battery Hambright on Cocksur Island at @fortpulaskinps near Savannah, #Georgia. This #Endicott-era battery was originally part of Fort Screven, a defense fortification constructed on Tybee Island to guard the entrance of Savannah. It was planned as one of seven batteries to support submarine mine placement operations. Mines were placed in the North Channel of the Savannah River in 1898 in response to the threat posed by the Spanish American War. Named for Horace Hambright, an officer who died on the North Dakota frontier in 1896, construction began in 1899 and finished in 1900, two years after the Spanish-American War had ended. While completed, guns were never installed. It was supposed to hold two 3" guns. #ga #gahistory #SpreadTheHistory #nps #nps103 #goparks #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #goparks #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #exploregeorgia #architecture #archi_ologie #fortpulaski #savannah #savannahga #smallparksaturday #nationalmonument #monumentsforall #batteryhambright #cockspurisland (at Fort Pulaski National Monument) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5jXJ3intXF/?igshid=12zxob9vytfww
