i'm always thinking about Solanum and the Hatchling "growing up together" despite being separated by time. the way the Hatchling grows up enamoured by Nomai language and culture and they are able to understand it through tracking Solanum as she grows up and learns the language and culture herself. the way they're both caught in a state of undeath on the cusp of adulthood. and despite the barriers of time and language, Solanum is at the campfire along with all the other astronauts that the Hatchling has known for their entire life.
i've long headcanoned that the Hatchling plays a cello (because of the cello part in 14.3 Billion Years and Morning on the soundtrack), though the instrument i've drawn them with here is designed after a bowed mountain dulcimer. it's more their size!
also, the pen i drew Solanum with in the first piece is mostly because i wanted to draw her in that pose, although having thought about it, it makes sense that kids would be given a more kid-sized version of the staff technology in a way that makes them practice their writing (rather than the keyboard on the staff's tablet) so i stand by it. also also, Solanum's warmer clothes and thicker fur on Brittle Hollow are because of the colder climate!

Andhera is a young Unseelie faerie with dark plum-coloured skin, extremely long pointed ears, and ember-red irises on black sclerae. His hair is in messy curls flopping down to the side, and streaked with dark grey. He is wearing his usual gold and black robe, exposing his chest, which is shiny from the drizzle raining down from their cloud. He is wearing a gold circlet on his head and several matching earrings in their extremely long ears. He is smiling gently with his eyebrows raised, looking in Hob’s direction. Their cloud is dark, subtly cracking with pink-purple lightning, and some of the peaks look like the tops of hearts.
Hob is a fluffy brown bugbear with large fangs and tall pointed ears. He is dressed down, wearing a plain navy-blue greatcoat with his cavalry hat tucked under one arm and his other behind his back. His brow is furrowed, and he is looking towards the ceiling, with comical droplets of sweat jumping off his forehead. His eyes are luminous yellow in the dark.

2: Continuing from the previous page, the first panel is a close-up of Somnus' eye, slightly bruised, half-closed and rolling back. A golden dragonfly rests on his cheek. The next panel is similar to the first, but the colouring of the scene has changed, his eye has widened in shock, and the blood and dragonfly are gone.
The eye panels are set on a background of a stormy sky, which becomes a full-page illustration of Somnus lying in a grassy field with Ademara sitting perpendicular to him. Ademara has her legs crossed and her chin resting in her hands, and is smiling at him. She is a skinny, pale woman with bright red hair and a perpetually dreamy expression.
3: A page with five panels, in which Somnus sits up and talks with Ademara. Somnus touches his neck, where there is no trace of the wound but his previous lightning scar is pale and prominent.
Somnus: What happened?
Ademara: You would know better than me.
Somnus: I really wouldn't-- I didn't see anyone-? We were in there less than a second. I-- Send me back. Please. Bring me up?
When he makes the request, he leans in to Ademara pleadingly, catching her by surprise. Lightning strikes in the background of the final panel.
4: A page with seven panels. Ademara appears thrilled by Somnus' request, her eyes alert for the first time. She hooks a lock of his hair behind his ear and asks, "Can I count on you to do something for me?" He looks uncomfortable, watching her hand.
He turns away from her and says, "I won't hurt anyone," to which Ademara pouts and thinks, "You're no fun," only for him to continue, "...that I care about." She smiles, satisfied.
Taking the back of his head in her hand, she leans in closely to whisper in his ear, "I'll keep that in mind." An even bigger lightning strike throws them into shadow.
The final two panels cut back to the material plane, where Somnus is lying unconscious. Blood has continued pooling under him, but colour is returning to his cheeks and his black eye is gone. The lightning scar visible on his neck is glowing. In the final panel, he explodes into lightning, hair and eyes crackling bright white. The sound of thunder cracking is shown with the word, "KA-THOOM!"
5: Somnus as the Tempest, with his eyes and hair filled with white lightning and electricity crackling around his drawn sword. He is dripping with blood from his neck although the wound is closed, and the lightning scar glows through the blood. There is also blood on his sword, his cloak, and the rim of his shield. He is mid-motion, one foot lifted from the ground and glaring out towards the viewer. The backdrop is dark, and he is surrounded by swirling wind.

In his left, he holds his briefcase, monogrammed with ‘T.B.’ He no longer has his hat, and he has grown sideburns. He is wearing a black waistcoat with a gold back, black pants, black gold-toed dress shoes, a white shirt and black tie, and a gold-faced watch. He has several tattoos visible on his arms including, ‘Garthy [O’Brien],’ ‘Fallinel’, ‘Queen?’, ‘KVX’, an image of a crown, ‘Ruby’, and ‘Beware Shadow[cat]’ with an image of a cat.

i know mechanically it doesn’t work like this but since wizards have to sit down and learn the spell and how to do it in their own way, i like the concept of doing lots of minor/modified/experimental versions of learned spells before they actually figure out how to make it work for them consistently/quickly/from memory. so here’s the wizard gang helping adaine learn to cast stoneskin.

As you start resting to get your spells back, you feel a tiny piece of your sister’s abjurative magic, her Abjurer’s Ward... You feel her begin to build a shield around you as you both trance.
these two make me so emotional. i have a headcanon that aelwyn’s magic is always kind of geometric looking but it gets very messy and asymmetrical after calethriel tower. after she recovers it’s less broken-looking but it keeps the asymmetry.
