Before there was The Clan, five colonies controlled what is now the Territory. Fighting was constant; it was considered an act of betrayal to seek out friends or a mate beyond one's native border, to say nothing of catching prey that crossed into another Clan's land. Generations upon generations have passed since the Union, but Scholars and the Margays still carry the stories of the old Clans, even if the retellings are a little foggy.
BLUFFCLAN: The Clan that eventually turned into the Plage family, and the most removed from the Valley's conflicts. Like their descendants, they spent a great deal of time traveling from the coast to the homeland, and back. They were considered by the others to be rogues pretending at Clan life, having no strict territorial borders and being the most apathetic about any interClan tension. Burly and broad, they likely could have taken down any other Clan they cared to, had they indeed cared to. As it was, they adjusted to the Union the best, and never brought up any bad blood, even as their colony's structure evolved and they were now expected to participate in the Clan's overall government.
FELLCLAN: The hills of the south were claimed by this Clan, lanky and noble-faced. FellClan was most famous for their beauty that even their sorest enemies had to admit to envying. Some say this was due to their regular breeding with non-Clan strangers, but no one knows where those strangers came from, just "far away". Their speed was unmatched as well, both in pace and in temper. FellClan was unafraid of a fight, often leaping into a war when begrudgingly requested, nevermind the scars and wounds that would mar their lovely faces. The Hillock family has inherited their appealing looks, but with so much foreign genetics in their bodies, who can say if FellClan's blood truly still remains in the Clan?
MIRECLAN: The predecessors to the Marish family, it is said, felt no fear, even in the darkest corners of their hearts. War was a game to them, and they intended to play and win all they could. MireClan was full of excellent swimmers, stealthy in hunting and in sneaking into enemy lands for a surprise attack. Their most common enemy was SlopeClan, who often had to call on FellClan to help drive the marsh cats off. The current family bears some of that aggression still, but the warlords of the past have faded into history, and are regularly disowned when forcibly reminded of.
RIDGECLAN: This Clan owned the Redwoods, and a good thing, because they were the largest in number, more often than not. They focused more on keeping their own territory protected than trying to claim more land. Unlike the inheritors of their grounds, the Burl family, RidgeClan was well-structured and united against all troubles. Legends say they were taller than FellClan and almost as strong as BluffClan. Said legends often come from the Redwoods' natives. More often, outsiders say they were powerful in their homeland and at a disadvantage everywhere else.
SLOPECLAN: Split into the Versant and the Brae families, SlopeClan claimed all of the Mountains (which became the singular mountain after the Union), including both the Chaparral and the Pine Forest. They always pushed for more land, though; evidently, such a grand spread wasn't enough to keep them all fed. They were the Clan most opposed to the Union, to the point of half of them splitting off and becoming the reclusive Brae, while the rest, now the Versant, mingled with their former enemies and developed a fondness for visitors. These cats were the smallest in stature, but certainly not in bravery. It takes some nerve to battle MireClan so often and for so long that one could expect to be born ready to die over their wars.
