#forkful

The “forkful” gesture—Italian hand-speak for: “Do you want to get lunch?”

Many Italians subscribe to the belief that a gesture is worth more than 1,000 words. According to a 2013 New York Times article, one researcher identified around 250 gestures that Italians use in everyday conversation to articulate common expressions, exclamations and queries. 

Yes, I am still gonna review their meals, despite *everything*.

First thing I noticed when I unpacked this one to throw it in the microwave - those aren’t black beans. I mean, that was actually corn on the side and I checked the ingredients list and corn was not listed at all. So that might be bad for someone who is allergic to corn?

I remembered this time that this was technically a rice bowl and so I poured the corn and onions on top of the beef and rice and then put the sour cream on top of that. This had a super thick sour cream, really lovely, and they mixed it with some stuff to make it just taste amazing. The meat was ever so slightly on the dry side and the rice was just plain white rice that was dry too, however, once you got the corn and the sour cream on there, you really didn’t notice it too much and the flavor was just fantastic. The seasonings in the beef were great and whatever they put in the sour cream was amazing . Altogether, it was really good.

*I didn’t know what barbacoa beef was so I looked it up - it’s a spiced shredded beef (or pork or lamb)

NOTE: Before you order from Forkful, please be aware of their shady practices - they do not refund orders for any reason and they will reopen cancelled accounts and continue charging you. Use a disposable card number!!! (Read the addendums at the end of this post to see why)

Ordering was pretty easy, however they do force you to input all of your credit card information before picking out your meals, which is kind of sneaky and underhanded - but disturbingly normal for these companies. I ordered on a Wednesday with delivery on the *next* Tuesday, almost a full week out (kind of annoyed by that), the scheduling had said delivery on the 11th however it was not delivered until the 12th. This was delivered by UPS (that is a whole other post about how much I dislike UPS and how they tend to disregard delivery instructions that I won't go into right now). Everything came in a rather large box - I got 12 this time so that I could get a couple for my husband, he does seem to enjoy having the different meals too. It was packed with two big ice packs that were still partially frozen so everything was mostly cold still. Looks like they use a recycled box liner to keep everything protected, it did seem to protect everything really well however it seems as though the inside of the liner shed all over the meals so there's there's some weird brown dust all over everything. So wipe down your packaging before you go to eat it. I guess it's probably not anything harmful but still…

It looks like everything was delivered as ordered (which is better than Marley Spoon). With a six day expiration from delivery (Had this been delivered on the date they quoted that would've been seven days which is okayish) I'll still be freezing a few of the non-rice ones just to stretch them out for a little bit longer. But the meals look really good and I cannot wait to try some of these.

They do not have an app so everything is done via their website. I used their half off first order, 10% off next order deal, $15.99 shipping - they came in at just under $6 a meal.

:Addendum #1:12/12/2025: Oopsie, I'm a dumbass and ended up forgetting to cancel Forkful in a timely manner! Cancelled it that day and contacted customer service - for future reference, Forkful will charge your card, but it will not refund your card. They will only add a credit to your account for use on your next order. After getting that runaround I requested to speak with a supervisor, was told they would escalate the case and someone would get back to me that day and of course they never did. So I have a second forkful order. They're just fucking lucky I really liked their meals, but because of this I will NOT be ordering from them again.

:Addendum #2:1/7/2026: HAHAHAHA Let this be a lesson to you folks, disposable credit/debit card numbers are your friend and you should use them when ordering online - especially from subscription services. Your bank, credit card company, apple or PayPal have this as an option that you can then freeze or change the number on as soon as your charge has gone through. Forkful sent me an email stating my meals for next week were being prepared! Um, what? I cancelled that last month after accidentally getting a 2nd box. Oh look - my account is back open and they charged me for another box - after cancelling. Are you fucking kidding me rn? Knowing their bullshit rules about refunds I just disputed it with my credit card company, changed the card number on file, cancelled the service AGAIN and emailed them to make sure they were not sending me any more food. They responded with a spiel trying to keep me as a customer!? Saying they could change my account to not automatically renew (this is not an option on the website btw). I said no, account is cancelled, remove my information from your system and do not send me any food. Chat, a few days later I got notification that my shipment was out for delivery. FFS. Contacted the delivery service and told them not to deliver. They said sure, put a note on the door to refuse delivery. Did that and OH LOOK THERES A FORKFUL BOX ON MY DOORSTEP. So Forkful refused to cancel the order and the delivery service ignored my refusal of shipment. My blood pressure people, can you even imagine?
