Nightmares werenât uncommon for Cole, though they typically werenât common either considering by the time that he managed to sleep he was so tired that he didnât dream. He just passed out, woke up a few hours later and continued to go about his day. So nightmares, just not something he worried about. He did have a hard time when they happened, heâd wake up in a cold sweat and wander down into the kitchen for a cup of tea or something else--stronger before heading back into his office and going about his work. Though it did mean the next time he crashed would be a lot longer.Â
However, since Brendan had returned heâd taken to bringing Cole to bed with him and forcing him into it. Sometimes heâd just wait until the other fell asleep and then heâd leave but it didnât take long for the other man to realize that was something he was doing. Now Brendan would stay up as late as he could, until he saw Cole getting tired and then he take him to bed and wait. It was impressive, how resilient he was and determined to make Cole sleep. It was unfortunate however, that today it worked.
Cole was already tired, heâd wandered around the desert looking for buried parts of Orreâs history, then he had to attend to his duties at Orre Colosseum and finally make an appearance at Mt. Battle for a challenger who managed to make it to the hundredth floor. By the time he was done he only got to escape because Brendan showed up to collect him. Laura would be lucky if she wasnât fired tomorrow for harassing the man.Â
Needless to say he was fairly tired, rubbing at his eyes and trying his best to stay awake. He didnât want to leave his bike at the Colosseum but Brendan had road on Salamenceâs back and Cole was tired enough that he actually agreed to the ride. They were back home before he knew it, dropped off at Coleâs house while Salamence wandered around to eat some berries from the treeâs Noctowl liked to sleep in. They had dinner and then Brendan helped him organize his office and thoughts on Team Snagem and Cipher before he was dragged to bed.Â
It shamefully took him only a good hour before he managed to pass out in bed, head buried in the pillows and his right hand gripping the bottom of the shirt that Brendan borrowed. He wasnât a clingy person, Cole actually wasnât used to touching others even Rui kept her distance apart from random acts of affection, but he found himself drawn to Brendan. A part of him worried, especially after the last time he went to Hoenn and how long that took, that if he left again he would come back. So he clung to him, hand gripping the bottom of Brendanâs shirt in his sleep and body angled toward him.Â
About an hour into sleep was when the nightmare hit. Horrible twisted memories of him stealing Pokemon from their trainers, the guilt he felt when seeing Celebi the first time, the horrible feeling of devastation when Eevee died and then the others he stole being subjected to the same thing. People blaming him for the Shadow Events, his mother's disappointed stares and terror--terrified of him. The monster he became that parents warn their children about before they start their adventures.Â
And then Brendan. Innocent, kindhearted Brendan, who had told him it wasnât his fault, blaming him just like everyone else. Because it was his fault, heâd stole those Pokemon knowing what was going to become of them. He handed them over to their fate and if heâd met Brendan any earlier in his life heâd done the same to him. The dark, dead and hollowed eyes of Ludicolo stared back at him, Brendan sobbing in the background and repeating itâs all your fault. The Pokemon reared back, a roar ripping from its throat before it launched itâs entire body at his, sharp terrifying teeth plunging into his neck and jaw locking around him tightly. And then, with a sharp twist, it tore his flesh from his body and ripped his jugular out.Â
Cole shot up in the bed, eyes wide and left hand flying up to his throat. He felt his skin, terror still clinging to his body as the remains of the nightmares clouded his mind. His right hand still clenching around Brendanâs shirt had twisted painfully in the fabric, his knuckles pressed against the flat of Brendanâs stomach. Slowly he released his grip, bones cracking as they straightened out from a fist. His heart hurt from beating so fast.Â
Glancing to the side he peeked over at Brendan, seeing the others eyes open and watching him carefully. Of course he was awake, how did you sleep with someones fist pressed into your stomach. He felt terrible suddenly, worse than he already did from that nightmare, and quickly turned his head away.Â
â Go back to sleep Brendan. â
Reaching his hand up he rubbed his face, pressing his lips together tightly when he felt the tears that were on his skin. He wasnât sure what felt more pathetic, the fact that he cried or the fact that he had reacted so strongly to the nightmare that he had started to strangle Brendan with his shirt. Perhaps it would be best if he turned one of the extra rooms into a spare bedroom for Brendan to sleep in rather than sharing a bed, that or he slept on the couch. Shaking his head he pushed away from the bed, standing to his feet.Â
He was going to leave, so that the other could actually sleep in peace when he heard him speak again. Turning a bit he glanced over at the bed, seeing Brendan sitting up now and still watching him. Truly, when had he become so observant? Before he could miss so many little things that Cole gave off and now it felt like he couldnât hide anything from him even when he was trying to.Â
The words he spoke made him turn his head back away, looking down to the ground once more. Nothing more you could have done. That was such a lie he wanted to laugh, laugh scream and cry at the same goddamn time. He had so many chances to do the right thing and he had chosen not to. It wasnât until he stole that machine to destroy it and ran into Rui that he was forced to do the right thing.Â
He was no better than the people that he mocked and tried to take down now. No better than the idiots who turned Team Snagem into real criminals instead of petty thieving pirates.Â
â Iâm a criminal Brendan. Stop expecting something better than that. I chose to do nothing, we both know that. â
He continued out of the room, closing the door quietly behind him. His hand shook against the doorknob and only now did he realize just how weak his body felt. Taking a breath he closed his eyes, took a chance to collect himself and then started for the office. He might not be any better than them, but that simply meant they thought the same and eventually, heâd make something right.
