Last month Stephen came to his third weekend Blacksmithing. On it he learned how to fireweld. Firewelding is welding steel/iron together using a Forge, hammer and anvil. Without electricity. Its considered one of the hardest skills in Blacksmithing and takes some practice to master. I’m using the bick I posted yesterday to forge weld and form the sockets on these chisels. I’d have to say I’m getting mixed results so far. I’m able to forge weld maybe 60-70% of the socket closed but I’m having lots of trouble where the socket gets thinner. I just can’t seem to get it to weld stick properly in that area. For these in the photo I electric welded the problem areas then worked them round. I’m going to keep trying until I can get 100% forge welded. I’m setting the chisels aside for awhile and moving on to this door pull. These were all over England when I visited last month. I photo documented lots of these so I thought it would be a good project to try. I’m also trying to build up the center mass by forge welding a collar on the bar. Normally I would use thicker material and draw out either end but just for the experience I thought this collar method was worth a try. First attempt at a key. 1/2” bar that I cut, bent into the ring and forged welded it back together.
