(visibly shaking as I try to not be predictable and ask about hormones for the first try) hey hahaha New York Snow storm 1979 hmmm what is that about? and did that really happen? like irl
Okay, so yes, the Snow Storm of 1979 in NYC was real and really bad. It was one of the things that apparently even got people discussing climate change because it was so unusual. I've read a lot about it and watched some news footage of people who were stuck in their cars until they had to walk home and stuff. I have this little note at the top of my doc to remind me of the sheer amount of sow: "From January 12th to the 14th, a winter storm dumped an estimated 18.4 inches of snow. This was a record amount for a single snowstorm."
That's a foot and half on a city not used to that much at once, things shut down and it was bad.
The fic is basically Daniel explaining to Armand that they can't go out, everything closed, and then realizing he has to go out and get some supplies since the snow isn't stopping. So they wander through the snow-covered streets and manage to have a good time. At least, that is the idea!
Daniel stared at the snow falling out the window, trying to ignore the heat of Armand’s stare on his back. There was half a foot of snow on the ground at least and it was no longer possible to tell where the sidewalk ended and the street began. In the streetlights, he could see where a few tracks from people who’d braved the walk to a corner store but no car had dared the road since this afternoon. The street had not been plowed and Daniel doubted any other streets nearby were much better.
“Come, Daniel, we’ll be late,” Armand urged.
“Late? Armand, the show is cancelled,” Daniel said. “The bar is closed.”
Armand frowned. He was pretty when he frowned, with the downward curve of his lips and narrowed eyes making him look closer to his mortal years. “How do you know?”
“Everything is shut down. Half the city is without power.” The power in the apartment had flickered a few times this afternoon but had luckily stayed on. So far. “You were just out there, didn’t you notice how empty the streets are?”
Daniel had no idea where Armand slept during the day, a constant point of contention. Sometimes Daniel would hear about some raging tenement fire or flooded out lot and worry that Armand might be caught in the disaster, unconscious and helpless. But Armand refused to reveal the location, so Daniel had no idea how far Armand had traveled tonight out in that mess to get here. He certainly wasn’t dressed for it, in a button up shirt, suit jacket, and dark denim pants.
Armand came through the galley kitchen and jointed Daniel at the window that looked out on the street. Snow was still barreling down from the sky with no signs of it stopping. Record snowfall was expected according to the evening news.
“How can you be sure?” Armand asked.
Daniel gave him a look. Armand had to be messing with him. “Trust me, nothing is happening anywhere in the city tonight.”
I really need to finish this one! I've had it in the works for a while now. Oops! Thank you for the ask!!
