man it feels like every week theres something coming out abt how bold fmri is actually not as reliable as we thought. tldr: the main signal used in fmri, BOLD, is not as good a marker of brain activity as we though and sometimes even signals the exact opposite. its rlly interesting and cool science but it also feels a little like, "but what THEN?" yknow. this commentary on the original article does a pretty good job of nuancing it though

🧠 🗝️ fMRI Brain-Decoding: What Neural Signals Really Show We often treat fMRI images as if they were snapshots of the brain’s private inner theater. But as Daniel C. Dennett explains, these colorful activation maps are not literal images—they are metaphorical reconstructions. Neural data is transformed by trainable networks and statistical models into shapes and colors we can interpret, much like a DVD encodes only instructions, not actual pictures.
