Truth is harsh, yeah, but not inherently malicious. Truth gives information to people dragged inside their portal. Truth spoke to tiny Edward Elric and explained what they were, what was happening, and gave him the hope to move forward after. The yearning for Truth led the Elrics to Izumi, giving her the chance to have two boys all her own. Truth has watched Alphonse’s body grow and live though they were under no real need to keep him alive outside of curiosity.
If Truth hates anyone or anything, mate, I’d reckon it’s you. You gotta send other people in your place just to have a chance.Â
There's a theory that, because Mustang didn't willingly open the gate, Truth took mercy on him and only took his eyesight instead of his eyes. Especially since there's another example where someone attempted Human Transmutation and did lose their eyes as payment.
I think that would definitely be an interesting idea! It also brings forth the idea of what Truth, as a concept, would view as mercy. Why eyesight in particular? They could've taken his sense of taste, or smell, or some toes. Something about eyesight in particular seemed to be the key. Maybe... Truth saw it as a way to help Mustang not have to face the carnage he'd (unwillingly) done to the doctor?
