one. who are your role models?

“i love beyoncé, boa and janet jackson. they’re stellar performers and artists — they’re legends, and i hope i could perform even half as well as them one day.”

two. do you have any nicknames? if so, what do your friends and family call you?

“other than rin, i don’t have a lot of nicknames as my name is already short, but one of my friends calls me ‘kyuyomi’.” ( gwiyomi “cute” + kyuri = kyuyomi )

three. what are your favorite foods? what would you recommend to fans?

“bulgogi japchae, tteokbokki and nakji bokkeum are favorites to cook and eat.”

four. what are some places you would like to go but haven’t been to yet?

“i would like to go to italy, vancouver, mexico and sweden a lot; i’ve been to quite a few places growing up already, so the list doesn’t seem long. i want to go to sweden most, because i want to try their chocolate and go skiing.”

five. what would you say to a fan who is struggling?

"you are strong, and everything will be okay soon. handle everything at your own pace and remember there will always be someone willing to listen to you and your worries. keep fighting and know you’re loved.”

six. are there any languages you speak besides your native tongue? what other languages would you like to learn?

“i can speak and understand english and a little bit of japanese. i’m learning how to do sign and hopefully i’ll learn mandarin or french one day.”

“sza’s the weekend, boa-sunbae’s camo and dua lipa’s idgaf. as bonuses, dua’s blow your mind ( mwah ) and exid-sunbae’s ddd are also great.”

eight. did you always know you wanted to be famous as a child? was your family supportive?

"not at all, i actually wanted to be someone completely different. my parents were shocked i wanted to pursue this lifestyle, but there were supportive. they liked that i was happy.”

nine. why did you decide to become a trainee?

"i was approached after a gymnastic competition and given a card too. i had no experience with singing beforehand so i was hesitant, but i think i wanted a new experience, something to add to a list of accomplishments. i didn’t really want to be an idol until i actually began training.”

ten. where do you see yourself in 10 years from now?

“as nyx’s leader, i would love for nyx to still be going strong in the industry; releasing music together, just being who we are and having fun. i hope that we’d be closer than ever despite so much time together, as they’re my sisters and i love them. as a personal goal, i think i’d like to try dabbling with something completely new for me. i’m not sure what it is yet, but i love new experiences.”

eleven. what is something no one knows about you?

“i didn’t get into kpop until i became a trainee. i was used to listening whatever was on the radio, and wasn’t really a fan of a certain group or artist other than boa-sunbae. when i first became a trainee, i didn’t know who my seniors were and it was embarrassing back then.”

twelve. describe your family. who are the members in your family?

“i have an older twin brother and two more older brothers, making me the only girl and the youngest. there’s also my two parents, which make six of us in total.”

thirteen. how was your childhood? what was it like?

"i spent a lot of it training to be a gymnast while being homeschooled, so i don’t think it was very different from what i’m experiencing now. i was really competitive as a kid, and always tried my best to stay on top of just about everything. the only difference was that i didn’t have as many friends as i do now back then.”

fourteen. if you weren’t pursuing the path to fame, where do you think you would be?

"i am confident that i would be on the south korean olympics team for gymnastics and win a gold medal ! i was really close to joining the olympic team, so i like to think that had i not become a trainee and continued being a gymnast, i might’ve been able to achieve that goal or something close to it. either way, it’d be a blessing.”

fifteen. write a message to your fans — what would you like to say to them?

Facts:

Who are your role models?

So many! There are so many artists I listened to when I was a kid who basically started my love for music. Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, Prince, Blondie... Right now, I think I look up to my members the most. They make me want to work even harder.

Do you have any nicknames? If so, what do your friends or family call you?

Sometimes the members call me 8 Miles, like the Eminen song, or me and Siwan Milo & Otis, like the kid’s movie. Miles is already pretty short, so I don’t get many nicknames. 

What are your favorite foods? What would you recommend to fans?

I love McDonald’s! It always makes me feel like a kid again. To fans, I recommend a healthier meal. Please eat well.

What are some places that you would like to go but haven’t been to yet?

Everywhere! Traveling is definitely a goal of mine, and there is so much of the world left to see and different cultures to learn about. I want to meet all our Spirits worldwide.

What would you say to a fan who is struggling?

Please just keep pushing forward, and hold tight onto the things that make you happy. Life may be difficult, but it does get better, I promise.

Are there any languages you speak besides your native tongue? What other languages would you like to learn?

My native language is English, but I learned Korean when I was growing up. I also know some Japanese, Spanish, and Mandarin. But I’d love to learn everything! I want to talk to Spirits all over the world.

What are your three favorite songs at the moment?

Only three? ...If I have to choose... By Your Side by Hoody, Love Satellite by Clazziquai Project, and... Pouring by Smoke & Mirrors!

Did you always know you wanted to be famous as a child? Was your family supportive?

I’ve always loved music, so I knew that was what I wanted to do! My parents weren’t really supportive of it, but I understand why now that I’m older. They’ve started to come around.  

Why did you decide to become a/n trainee/idol/actor/model?

I knew music is what I’m meant to do, and so I auditioned for Wonder Records when I was 17. It was really difficult, but it was an opportunity I wouldn’t trade for the world.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years from now?

Hopefully still with Smoke & Mirrors, if I’m lucky. They really are my family — every future I can see right now is with them.

What is something no one knows about you?

My coordination isn’t really all that great, but I’m actually really good at rollerskating! I used to go to skating rinks all the time in America.

Describe your family. Who are the members in your family?

My family is small. My mother, my father, and me.  

How was your childhood? What was it like?

Overall, I had a pretty good childhood, but school wasn’t the best. I struggled a lot with my peers back then, but things are much better now.

If you weren’t pursuing the path to fame, where do you think you would be?

I don’t know. I can’t see a life without music, and without the fans. I feel like this is the only thing I’m meant to do.

‘ i am quite fond of most of my seniors. i’ve been looking up to all of them as i grew up. but some artists i’ve particularly been a fan of lately are sirens, polaris and halcyon. i’ve had sirens’ music on repeat lately. ’

‘ i don’t really have any nicknames. i’m not someone who goes by many nicknames. i don’t even go by ara except for performing. sometimes the members call me mom though. ’

three. what are your favorite foods? what would you recommend to fans?

‘ i’m particularly a fan of bulgogi and samgyeopsal, but i’m not very picky. i will be happy with anything that is offered to me. ’

four. what are some places that you would like to go but haven’t been to yet?

‘ i think mexico is very beautiful and i’ve always wanted to go, so i hope to make it there someday. i think latin american culture is very lovely. ’

five. what would you say to a fan who is struggling?

‘ please take care of yourself. i know things get hard, but there are people to talk to and healthy ways to channel your negativity and pain, so please take good care of yourself and keep fighting. surround yourself with people who care about you and your wellbeing. ’

six. are there any languages you speak besides your native tongue? what other languages would you like to learn?

‘ my parents did a lot of traveling so they made an effort to learn new languages, so they taught me a little of this and that, so i know a little english and spanish. ’

seven. what are your three favorite songs at the moment?

‘ as i said before, i’ve been listening to a lot of sirens lately --- i love girl groups. particular favorites of mine are 10 seconds and girl’s heart. i’ve also been listening to happiness due to their recent comeback. i’m quite fond of kingdom come. ’

eight. did you always know you wanted to be famous as a child? was your family supportive?

‘ i had never initially planned on becoming an idol. i was still kind of considering my options for my future before i became a trainee, but my parents were incredibly supportive the entire time. even before i considered it as an option, they were supportive of whatever i wanted to do for my future. ’

nine. why did you decide to become an idol?

‘ it took a lot of thinking after i got the offer from wonder records to audition. i wasn’t sure it was what i wanted to do, and didn’t think i was experienced at all as a performer, but i thought i’d give it a chance since i do love performing. ’

ten. where do you see yourself in 10 years from now?

‘ i hope, in ten years, legends are still together and all seven of us are still friends and still close. i hope to be doing this, and with my bandmates for as long as possible. ’

eleven. what is something no one knows about you?

‘ i can play a few instruments. since my mom is a musician, it was something that always followed me so they taught me a little bit of this and that. i’m pretty good at the piano and violin --- which is what my mom played --- and i can play a few other instruments a little. ’

twelve. describe your family. who are the members in your family?

‘ i have my mom and dad, who i’m very close to. i don’t have any siblings or pets --- but at least i have the legends members, who are now my brothers. ’

thirteen. how was your childhood? what was it like?

‘ it was very creative. i did a lot of artsy things growing up because that’s what my parents were into. eventually, i gravitated towards dance so that’s what most of my childhood consisted of. i did a lot of it and did some travelling with my parents throughout my life, which made it very exciting. ’

fourteen. if you weren’t pursuing the path to fame, where do you think you would be?

‘ i kinda wanted to be a teacher. i don’t know if that’s a path i would’ve actually pursued, but i think it would be a nice setting for someone like me, and i would fit right in. ’

fifteen. write a message to your fans — what would you like to say to them?

Who are your role models? I don’t really have any role models if I’m being perfectly honest. There are people who motivate me to be the best I can be, and those are my group members and our fans. 

Do you have any nicknames? If so, what do your friends or family call you? I have quite a lot of nicknames. My friends and family members call me Min, Minnie or Min Min.

What are your favorite foods? What would you recommend to fans? I’m a huge foodie, so this is a pretty tough question.. I guess if I had to recommend one dish to fans, it’d have to be Tteok-Bokki. Can’t go wrong with a classic.

What are some places that you would like to go but haven’t been to yet? Halcyon have traveled to many places over the years, but somewhere I’d like to go that I haven’t is South America. I know we have a lot of fans there, and it would be great to see them.

What would you say to a fan who is struggling? Talk to someone. It might seem really hard to open up at first, but you won’t regret it. And make sure that it’s someone you trust and someone who will give you sound advice, or point you in the direction of someone that can help you.

Are there any languages you speak besides your native tongue? What other languages would you like to learn? I can speak English, Japanese, Mandarin and Thai, although my Thai isn’t really the best. I’d love to learn how to speak Spanish and French as well. And Cantonese. 

What are your three favorite songs at the moment? I’m really into western music at the moment. That artist, SZA? I love her music. Love Galore is one of my favorite songs at the moment. Cardi B’s Bodak Yellow is really, really catchy, I can’t get enough of it. And I’m really enjoying No Limit by G-Eazy, ASAP Rocky and Cardi B right now too. 

Did you always know you wanted to be famous as a child? Was your family supportive? I didn’t really have a choice. My parents were very... Insistent on me becoming famous. I couldn’t really not be famous after coming from a family of people involved in the business. 

Why did you decide to become a/n trainee/idol/actor/model? I didn’t really decide. I became an actor when I was five and an idol when I was fourteen. Not really a choice on my part, but I’m happy.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years from now? Honestly? Maybe retired from the idol life and doing a few acting roles here and there.

What is something no one knows about you? I can split my legs.

Describe your family. Who are the members in your family? There’s quite a few of us, seven in all. There’s my parents, my younger brother, my sister, my brother and me. 

How was your childhood? What was it like? Not really all that different from my life right now, if I’m being honest. I worked all the time, going from set to set. I was homeschooled so I could focus on acting. 

If you weren’t pursuing the path to fame, where do you think you would be? I think I’d still be in school right now, studying to become a doctor. Not a medical doctor, but a psychological doctor. Psychology’s always interested me, so I’d pursue that.

“i look up to my siblings a lot ... they have been in the industry for a long time, and they know what they’re doing. they’re good, responsible people who are respected ... i hope to be like them one day.”

“no ... i don’t like nicknames, but my mom calls me as ‘hoya’ sometimes.”

"i like everything, i don’t think i have a favorite— there’s too many options and so little time to weigh the pros and cons. however you can never go wrong with something like ... tteokbokki, gimbap or dakkochi ...”

four. what are some places you would like to go but haven’t been to yet?

“i have been to a lot of places in my childhood, so i feel like my options are limited even if i haven’t been to many places. i would like to go to greece and see their architecture, or even brazil to walk through the rainforest. taking a vacation to the bahamas sounds nice too.”

five. what would you say to a fan who is struggling?

"it is okay to struggle; your feelings are valid. it’s okay to take a few days to yourself and step back from the situation, but just remember that you are not alone, and that there will always be someone who is willing to help you. you are loved and you will never be alone.”

six. are there any languages you speak besides your native tongue? what other languages would you like to learn?

“i speak english and japanese, and i would like to learn mandarin or something like ... french. i’d also like to learn hawaiian or greek if i get the chance.”

”lately i have been listening to jaewon-sunbae’s collaboration with arty, idea of you, btob-sunbae’s fly away and the weeknd’s secrets. why are these all sad songs? i think it’s just that time of year.”

"yes ! i wonder if that sounds weird, but i really wanted to be a part of the entertainment business. i can’t imagine myself anywhere else, and my family liked that i knew what i wanted to do at a young age... they were more than willing to support me on my endeavours ...”

nine. why did you decide to become a trainee and idol?

"i wanted to make music. i realized this after attending my first concert that i wanted to perform for people. there was this feeling in the crowd that’s been unforgettable to me since then, and i wanted to do the same thing, you know? i liked the idea of being able to make people experience different emotions through music i would one day put out. i was really inspired ...”

ten. where do you see yourself in 10 years from now?

“i hope to be filming a drama or film ! i like acting ... though, maybe in ten years i could promote my own self-composed album; i think it’d be nice to show people a different side that no one has seen from me when the time comes.”

eleven. what is something no one knows about you?

“i am surprisingly flexible. i don’t look like the type, right?”

twelve. describe your family. who are the members in your family?

“there’s seven of us; my parents, my four siblings, and then the youngest member is me. we’re very close, and we don’t see each other often but we try to have dinner once a week together. we’re all busy, and private, but there’s nothing but love for each other.”

thirteen. how was your childhood? what was it like?

"i think i didn’t get much of one, but it’s okay. i was going back and forth from school and sets a lot, but other than that i don’t remember much of it.”

fourteen. if you weren’t pursuing the path to fame, where do you think you would be?

"i think i’d like to do what one of my brothers is doing, just laying low and living his life how he needs to. i think i’d still be in university, and but i would be studying a different subject. if i wasn’t interested in being an idol or an actor, i think i’d like to be a scientist.”

fifteen. write a message to your fans — what would you like to say to them?

Facts: 

She speaks fluent English, Japanese, and Mandarin because she knew from a young age she wanted to be an international idol.

She had two older sisters: one was a member of Pandora, and the other passed away in 2013.

Her older sister now runs a ramen shop that is a national franchise: Three Kang Sisters Restaurant.

She played the role of Jinhee in Train to Busan and said afterward that she loved acting so much that she hopes to go into it more deeply.

She’s been described as a very competitive and intense person.

When she sleeps, she curls up into a ball into the smallest space possible.

She has said that her stage name comes from the fact that her oldest sister named her at birth, and now that she rues the death of her oldest sister (”Ru”ri), it is meaningful to her because her sister named her twice. She also says she just loves making puns.

She is a terrible cook at everything except ramyeon, which she cooks exceptionally well.

When she is able to move out of her dorm, she wants to live at her sister’s house, which is an apartment above the original location of Three Kang Sisters Restaurant.

Who are your role models? 

“My sister, Yuna, for sure. She’s such a strong woman and I’m so proud of how she picked herself up after Pandora’s disbandment. Also, I wouldn’t be an idol if she hadn’t become one first.”

Do you have any nicknames? If so, what do your friends or family call you? 

“It’s usually just Yuri. Some people call me Yu, some call me Ri, some call me Ru; I have a very nickname-able name.”

What are your favorite foods? What would you recommend to fans?

“Ramyeon! There’s nothing like a hot bowl of it on a cold day . . . or even a hot bowl of it on a hot day, now that I think about it. It’s something that your loved ones can make for you easily, so it’s even better. I recommend topping it with a basted egg— some people want you to boil or poach it, but if you fry an egg in some butter and then spoon the butter over the top, it’ll give a better consistency to the dish. Also, it’s important to remember that even instant noodles can become better with kimchi on the side or carmamelized sweet potato, along with parsley or a mint sprig on top.”

What are some places that you would like to go but haven’t been to yet?

“I want to go to Hawaii. I’m so cute in a swimsuit that if I went to a hot place like that, I’d finally have an excuse to wear one every day.”

What would you say to a fan who is struggling?

“I know how it feels, but I promise it gets better when you look at the bad things in a good light and decide to learn from them. No matter what happens, your life will go on and you’ll always have people to support you— it’s okay to feel emotions deeply as long as you pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and forge on harder than before.”

Are there any languages you speak besides your native tongue? What other languages would you like to learn?

“I speak Korean, English, Japanese, and Mandarin Chinese. My goal is to learn three more languages by the time I turn twenty.”

“Decypher’s ‘Spring Day,’ Pandora’s ‘PARTY,’ and Happiness’ ‘Russian Roulette.’”

Did you always know you wanted to be famous as a child? Was your family supportive?

“I did know that, yes! My oldest sister wasn’t supportive at first because my middle sister was already an idol, but eventually she agreed because I begged her and also because she figured it was good publicity for our restaurant . . . she was always an excellent cook. Anyway, next question!”

Why did you decide to become a/n trainee/idol/actor/model?

“My oldest sister was.”

Where do you see yourself in 10 years from now?

“Hopefully, Rosebud lasts that long, but I don’t think anything really lasts forever, so I don’t like to think about that. I really liked acting in Train to Busan; maybe I’ll give it a shot to act full-time.”

What is something no one knows about you? 

“Sometimes my heart hurts very badly from the one time I broke a rib after I fell off my bike and the handlebars hit me in the chest.”

Describe your family. Who are the members in your family?

“I only have three living family members. My uncle is a good man, though he doesn’t really act like it. My older sister, Yuna, was in Pandora, but now she runs a noodle shop. Her husband Kyungtaek is a really fun person, and I like him because I can tell he loves Yuna very much. I had a third sister, Yura.”

How was your childhood? What was it like?

“I’d say that my childhood was a good one! Even though my uncle wasn’t around often since he was too nervous to raise children, I had both my sisters, and they took good care of me. I think I might . . . be a little spoiled because of that, honestly.”

If you weren’t pursuing the path to fame, where do you think you would be?

“I’d definitely be a waitress at Three Kang Sisters Restaurant.”

PART B — THE QUESTIONNAIRE.

Who are your role models? ( explain why if you want to. )

“Uh, Dave Grohl, Chris Corner and Adam Franklin. That’s just to name a few, mind you. I just think that they’ve really shaped music to what it is today and should definitely be on the Hall of Fame or something.”

Do you have any nicknames? If so, what do your friends or family call you?

“A member of my previous band used to call me Yung J. It was funny at first before people thought I was a rapper. Nah, man. I don’t have the skills to be one. Sorry.”

What are your favorite foods? What would you recommend to fans?

“Definitely curry or anything spicy. Kimchi fried rice, everyone. Get it, love it and thank me later.”

What are some places that you would like to go but haven’t been to yet?

“Everyone says America nowadays but I want to go to Paris, Italy, Africa and possibly England. They’re equally fascinating and rich in culture, you know? Have you seen the Stonehenge? That’s some freaky stuff that I want to see.”

What would you say to a fan who is struggling?

“I know life can get hard but I also know you are strong to keep your head up high. Just breathe, eat some ice cream and tell yourself that if you are beautiful inside and out. You’ll get through this. I’m with you until the end.”

Are there any languages you speak besides your native tongue? What other languages would you like to learn?

“I’m pretty decent with English and Italian. I really want to learn Japanese and French, though.”

What are your three favorite songs at the moment?

“Outside by Foo Fighters, She’s My Collar by Gorillaz and Half-Life by Sneaker Pimps.”

Did you always know you wanted to be famous as a child? Was your family supportive?

“I think everyone has the dream of being famous as a child, right? But, like, I didn’t care if I became famous or not. All I knew was that I wanted to create music and be a musician, even if that meant performing in subway stations. My dad wasn’t really supportive at first, which probably had to do with the road I chose in my younger years, but now he’s the stone in my life.”

Why did you decide to become a/n trainee/idol/actor/model?

“I guess… to just move on with my life and by doing so, I have been blessed with amazing members who are my family and loving fans who I will go to hell and back for.”

Where do you see yourself in 10 years from now?

“Probably with a nice house in Venice, Italy with someone who I loved completely. Just playing the guitar to them and our children on our balcony before I challenge them to a round of video games.”

What is something no one knows about you? ( can’t be one of the facts you used earlier ! )

“My first ever part-time job was a mechanic. It was really brief but at least I got a free motorcycle out of it. Her name is Miss Daisy.”

Describe your family. Who are the members in your family?

“Well, it’s just my father and I. Supposedly my mother passed away when I was young but there’s something fishy about that. Anyway, my dad can be strict at times but he’s really a big softie who loves collecting action figures. Sorry, dad, was that supposed to be a secret?”

How was your childhood? What was it like?

“I tend not to think about my childhood.”

If you weren’t pursuing the path to fame, where do you think you would be?

“Either making music in a garage, a full-time mechanic or… something else that I should keep private.”
