The only social contacts he has are Peter when he needs help with his history homework, the old man from across the hall who bakes too much and gives Steve some sweet treats every sunday and the stray cats in the alley behind the building that he feeds. And theres the people from the therapy group he leads... And of course the people on the street who absolutely seem to hate him and love to let him know.

Do his neighbors to the left that constantly fight so loud he hears every word count? Steve sighs as he hears then fight once more and he isn't strong enough to hold himself back. "Fucking finally break. up! The building is sick and tired of you two fighting! Move out!" He barks against the wall. Against the picture of him and his friends... who kind of broke up. No more avengers... No more found family. Steve blinks at the picture and mutters a sorry before someone bangs on his door. Great! It's probably the asshole from next door.

With another sigh he goes to open the door. The angry gnome from next door stops in his tracks, the red falling from his face faster than his eyes grow the size of dinner plates because of all people it was the ex captain America that just told him to fucking break up. "Uh..." Steve rolls his eyes at the stammering. "Listen, sorry for the profanities but damn I'm so annoyed at your constant fighting. Keep it down or I'll complain to the building manager." He says, his tone serious and the gnome nods as if Steve just gave him an order... Well maybe he did. Steves eyes flutter to the poor girlfriend who stands in the doorframe. She's cute. "You deserve better." Is all he says before he turns around, catches a glimpse of the old man, Stanley, across the hall and closes the door. He lets out another sigh and crawls back onto the couch. Silence at last... At least in his environment..his head is loud as ever as his eyes fall back on the picture of his found family. Maybe he should go visit Tony. Or maybe Clint on the farm? Maybe he could guilt trip them all to see him for his birthday? He purses his lips and is about to text them when there's a gentle knock on his door. He swears if it's that gnome again he'll punch him into the next century.

As Steve opens the door he's met with the most beautiful woman he's every seen. His eyes grow wider and his mouth opens slightly. "H...Hi! You don't know me, I just moved in on the other side of the loud apartment... I just uh... Thank you for making them shut up?" You give him and unsure smile and all he can do is nod and stare. Which makes you nervous. "I uh... I had the night shift and I should sleep but they were so loud I couldn't. I already knocked against the wall but that didn't stop them. So thank you again!" You ramble on, nervously wringing your hands. Something makes Steve snap out of it. "Oh! No problem... They annoy me a lot too, although I don't have... work..." He offers awkwardly and then he holds out his hand. "I'm Steve" you smile softly at that and put your hand in his, offering your name. He softly shakes it and maybe holds it for a bit too long, not that any of you care.

"I should let you get back to sleep. Night shift sounds awful. Exhausting job?" He asks with an easy smile. "Sometimes? It's just exhausting when you have the night shift immediately after your move to scream town" he chuckles at your joke, which makes your insides release thousands of butterflies. "Yeah I think the building manager makes them leave for showings. They didn't scream for mine or for Stan's showing" he points to the door across from him and you immediately know that that must be where Stan lives. "They probably do or they'd have an empty floor" you joke and there's another sweet chuckle. "I uh... Thanks again, I'll leave you to it." You say before he can answer and give him a sweet smile and a small wave before heading back to your apartment. Steves heart flutters as he watches you leave. Did screaming at the gnome just introduce him to the sweetest human alive? He closes his door after you've entered your apartment. With a new pep in his step he goes to his phone and reaches out to his friends.

It's just a couple of days later when you knock on his door again. He's surprised to see you but oh so happy. "Hey sorry if I'm disturbing you" he smiles and shakes his head, urging you to go on. "I... That'll sound like I'm a creep but I uh... I saw you feed the strays and I wanted to bring you some food for them." You hold up the bag of food and Steve smiles sweetly. "Yeah... I started feeding them when I moved in. Can't have 3 cats though and I can't just take one. Would be a shame to separate them" he says as he takes the bag from you and thanks you sweetly. "Yeah it would be... They're so cute though" you gush and he smiles even more. "Hey uh... Wanna come in? Stan made too much cake and gave me like half of it... We could share?" You immediately nod and give him a shy smile. "I'd love that" Steve beams at that and let's you in. As you sit down he gets some tea for the both of you and gives you some cake.

One slice of cake turned into two. That turned into dinner and dinner turned into the two of you kissing on his couch. Kissing on his couch turned into a beautiful relationship filled with love and laughter. Steve has never been happier and he vowed to the universe to give everything in his power to not lose you. And whoever in the universe listened fulfilled his wish. A short engagement led to a beautiful outdoor wedding on Tony's property with everyone from his found family showing up. The two of you bought a house and moved in together with the 3 strays that you just couldn't leave behind. And your little family soon grew to a family of 7 when you got pregnant with twins.

Steve has never been prouder to carry a title then the title of daddy. Little chubby hands around his finger, big eyes taking in the wonder of the world and your beautiful smile as you're watching him with your little ones.

When he looks in the mirror, he can see the years in his eyes, but not his face. He’s still a young man in the eyes of the people. But he feels his age every year more.

Or is it the longing for a change?

“Come on Capsicle, why the long face?” Tony pats Steve’s back. “You know that this is a party, and you are expected to enjoy it. Go and get a nice girl. Ask her for a dance before you turn one hundred and seven years old.” Tony cackles before walking off.

“I hate to admit it, but Stark knows how to throw a party,” Bucky steps next to his best friend, offering a drink to Steve. “Here, down it in one go to feel the burn. We can’t get drunk but the taste ain’t bad. Stark has a great taste too when it comes to booze.”

“Did you ever wish for something more?” Steve dips his head to look at Bucky. “I mean, we are fighting the good fight, but something is missing.”

“Steve, be honest with me,” Bucky knits his brows together while looking at his friend, “are you in a midlife crisis, buddy? Do you want to buy a fast car and sleep with women half your age?”

Bucky grins. Steve makes a face.

“I think you are confusing me with a younger Tony Stark,” Steve scoffs and finally takes the drink out of Bucky’s hand.

“Well, Capsicle, in your case a woman half your age would be fifty-three, not exactly my type,” Tony cackles from the other side of the bar. He grins before walking off.

“Yeah, because your wrinkly ass prefers a twenty-something bimbo,” you snicker and raise your glass on Steve. “Leave the captain alone. It’s his birthday.”

Tony sticks his tongue out. “If I remember right, I’m throwing him a party. It’s my right as the host to roast the birthday boy. Cheers, Capsicle. I hope your ass stays wrinkle-free for another year.”

“It’s America’s ass after all,” you grin at Tony. “A nice ass too. Cheers on Captain America’s ass and the man himself.”

“Uh-oh, I think Y/N is a little tipsy,” Bucky nudges Steve. “Come on. It’s your chance. If you stammer this time, she won’t remember and just laugh it off.”

“What do you mean?” Steve grunts.

“You have been pining over her for years,” Bucky rolls his eyes. He can’t believe his friend sometimes. “How much older do you want to grow to ask her out?”

Steve glances at you in your dress. You’re wearing a navy blue sleeveless retro vintage 1950s swing dress with white stars on it. It’s a beautiful flare dress with a dress halter pushing your cleavage up. You’re wearing a red neckerchief to complete the look.

His heart beats a little faster than usual when you grab two glasses of champagne and walk toward him. Bucky immediately leaves Steve’s side, giving his friend a thumbs up before disappearing into the crowd.

“Happy Birthday, Captain,” you smile at Steve, putting on your sweetest pout. “I hope it’s a good one, and that we can spend more birthdays together. I hope all of your wishes come true, Steve.” You hand him a glass of champagne. “I know you can’t get drunk but we should raise our glasses to your birthday.”

Steve’s eyes are glued to your crimson lips. You’re wearing a little more make-up than usual. Of course, it’s all fifties style.

“You look beautiful today,” he manages to get out and curses himself. “You always look good, but I like that dress.” His cheeks dimple when you put your hand on his chest. Steve prays you cannot feel his heart beat so fast it might jump out of his chest.

“Thank you, Steve,” you smile while saying his name. “Do you like your party?”

“Now that you’re here with me, I like it better,” Steve flashes you a sweet smile. He’s nervous, you can see his hand tremble, but you don’t mind. It’s kind of cute that this strong and handsome man is nervous around you.

“If that’s so,” you move a little closer to look up at Steve. Batting your eyelashes you purr his name. “Why don’t you dance with me? I have waited all night for you to dance with me.”

Steve clears his throat and straightens his back. “Y/N, would you give me the honor and dance with me.”

You giggle when he puts the glass of champagne away and takes yours out of your hand.

“Yes, Captain,” you take his offered hand. “I feared you’d never ask. What can a girl do but wait for a gentleman to ask her for a dance.”

Steve leads you toward the dancefloor, catching everyone’s attention as he finally makes a move. They don’t know you asked him for the dance, but it doesn’t matter the moment you place your arms on Steve’s shoulders. He smiles and puts his hands on your hips.

You start to sway, to the soft music they play. Getting lost in the song you rest your head on Steve’s chest and wrap your arms around him. He embraces you and welcomes your warmth while murmuring your name.

Steve closes his eyes. Having you in his arms is the fulfillment of his dreams. Everything falls into pieces for Steve. He’s the spar-spangled man with a plan after all. Even though, he needs years to finally have a dance with you…

Steve gasps as Thor's hand comes down again on his ass. He digs his fingers desperately into his arms, trying to hold on.

He sighed, took the keys, and went out. Unfortunately, it had become a habit to visit your grave at least once a week.

Steve regretted very few things, and one of those was not proposing to you; he was going to do it once the war was over. He had the perfect picture in his mind: coming back from the war like a hero, knocking on your door, and just as you opened it, he would get down on one knee and ask you to marry him. The ring was the same one his mother had worn since he was a child; he had thought it was stunning.

He cleaned up your grave a bit, put the flowers on it, and said he would give anything to be with you again to clear up the lie he discovered at the Smithsonian.

I'm sorry for the lies you surely heard. I would like to see you again to explain everything that really happened. I have never stopped loving you.

"When we grow up, Y/N is going to marry me," Bucky assured.

You frowned.

"No, I'm going to marry Stevie," you assured.

You looked out again to make sure you had lost Bucky. You didn't want him to interrupt your first date; you hadn't told him you were dating either, and luckily he didn't get to interrupt you.

Steve knew it was the only chance he would have; he would take care of making things right, and he hoped the rest would understand, but the truth was that he also deserved to have his happy ending and to fulfill all his dreams.

He had missed the neighborhood; he remembered it perfectly. He stopped a few meters from your house, took a breath, and hoped you weren't angry or that you didn't want to see him.
