Blank Space QAnon. On the Success of a Conspiracy Fantasy as a Collective Text Interpretation Game
by Florian Cramer and Wu Ming 1
Originally published, in German and in a shorter version, in Süddeutsche Zeitung on 30 October 2020.
QAnon – the movement according to which Donald Trump wages a secret war against satanic and pedophilic elites – is not just a run-of-the-mill conspiracy belief, but functions as a collective text interpretation game. This is also the reason for his ridiculous success, which now includes the German Reichsbürger [people who believe that the German Reich still exists and that the Federal Republic of Germany is a company with no legal basis registered in Frankfurt] and Corona denier scene. The fact that QAnon’s origin story was collaged from literary and popular cultural sources – among them a novel published in 1999 by the co-author of this article – does not throw off its followers.

I have huge respect and admiration for those who spend their spare time organising zine events (whether zine clubs, zine fests, zine fairs, exhibitions or markets).
Over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to meet plenty of these zine heroes - here are just a few of them ✌🏽
Top - bottom:
Momo Nonaka - organiser of Tokyo's monthly Zinester Afternoon and co-organiser of the Tokyo Zinester Gathering in Japan.
Anna Sofie Mørch Bendixen - organiser of the Copenhagen Zine Fest in Denmark.
Florian Cramer, Tim Sake, Rachael Sender Wharmby and Amy Suo Wu (l-r) - organisers of the Rotterdam Zine Camp in The Netherlands.
Takao Ogiwara - organiser of Takasaki zine event, Zinphony in Japan.
Chella Quint - co-organiser of the Sheffield Zine Fest in the United Kingdom.
Jes Walsh - organiser of Zinefest Berlin in Germany.
The Q in Qonspiracy: QAnon as a paradigm for future social-media-driven conspiracism
In this conversation between Wu Ming 1 and Florian Cramer, moderated by Tatiana Bazzichelli, QAnon is discussed as a template for contemporary social-media-driven conspiracy fantasies that work simultaneously as games and a new kind of cults. By focusing on the mutation of conspiracy myths from countercultural phenomena to contemporary meme and influencer culture, the two speakers focus on QAnon and Covid-19-related conspiracy narratives.
The conversation is centered around Wu Ming 1’s forthcoming book La Q di Qomplotto: QAnon e dintorni. Come le fantasie di complotto difendono il sistema [The Q in Qonspiracy: QAnon and its surroundings. How Conspiracy Fantasies Defend the System], to be published on March 25th by Edizioni Alegre, Rome.
Organized by Disruption Network Lab, March 12th, 2021.

What is interface Aesthetics, or What could be it be (not)? Florian Cramer
par.7 見える.
The post-digital condition is a post-apocalyptic one: the state of affairs after the initial upheaval caused by the computerisation and global digital networking of communication, technical infrastructures, markets and geopolitics. -Florian Cramer

Well post-apocalyptic in that the fantasy technology of cyber punk now has to deal with real world problems from legislation to social customs. However this has been understood since at least 2006. I like Cramer's analysis of post-digital since then. Cramer's distinction between what is technically digital and analog vs contemporary meaning is useful.
Off the Press - Florian Cramer, Electronic Publishing in the Arts, what does work and what doesn’t Off the Press: Electronic Publishing in the Arts Session #3: Introducing the Digital Publishing Toolkit 22 MAY 2014, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen The computer industry promises for electronic publishing - better audiovisuality, more interactivity, easier distribution, lower costs, easier do-it-yourself publishing - often don’t quite match the reality of what is possible with electronic books and magazines, especially for small and low budget publishers. On the other hand, there new yet not-so-obvious opportunities and possibilities for publishers that go digital. This presentation will summarize some of the general experience designers and publishers gathered in one year of conducting the Digital Publishing Toolkit project.
