Headcanon: Learning to Fly
When a young Rito receives a scale from Valoo they do not immediately know how to fly nor are their feathers completely grown in. Instead, there is a period of time where all they can do is go rock hopping or fall with style (which is what most Fledglings do right after their feathers begin to grow).
Rock hopping is where the youngster stands on one of the many outcroppings on the island and attempts to launch themselves off to flutter to a nearby perch. As they get braver they'll attempt higher heights and longer distances-though they are prone to misjudge the jump a couple of times at first and have to glide down to the ground or risk running into the wall. (This is about where Medli's skill level is at).
Both phases are usually relatively short lived as the newly-feathered Rito often spends most of his or her time practicing their gliding and rock hopping abilities. Baby feathers and fluff from still growing wings can be found around popular learning sites from the frantic flapping of fledgling wings.
