Choppy Fox: what went right / what went wrong
Choppy Fox was my entry for the Flappy Jam. I am a bit late at debriefing it, but better late than never, right?
What went right
I am proud to have posted my 1st ever jam entry.
It took me only the equivalent 3 workdays of development, thanks to HaxeFlixel, that I started playing with a little before.
Having managed team during the development of middle-size game projects, I had to lead my fellow developers to make clean code. This was all about communication and maintanability. But alone, no need to do so: one main class was enough!
At some point I began thinking about optimization (object-pooling), but a little voice in my head asked me to forget it. The idea was to make a game very quickly.
The final result is playable, and my wife really enjoyed it.
What went wrong
I first wanted to combine the Flappy Jam with the 1GAM theme of February, "Loops" but I was unable to come with a concept really combining this theme and the Flappy Jam constraint, so I abandoned my original idea, Looping Plane.
I am originally a graphic designer, but not a pixel artist. I spent a bit of time experimenting, but it would have been too much time-consuming to continue that way.
You can't turn off the sound, because I did not take the time.
What went right and wrong on the same time
So I went "sprite-chasing". As Flappy Bird's set in a Mario-like universe, I decided to set my game in a Sonic-like one. The sprite I found inspired directly the way the hero moved, but I realized afterwhile that the jam asked not to rip assets. Whoops.
Next jam, I will...
not make pixel art, or keep it very, very simple, or use free pixel art (found a lot of good stuff at http://www.derekyu.com/tigs/assemblee/)
have my concept tested ASAP so I can polish it.
not even think about optimizing, and not overengineer.
not impose myself another constraint that the jam constraints.
use a framework I have played with BEFORE.
attentively read the jam brief.
give player the ability to turn the sound off.
Flap in Time
Developers: Luderia
Platforms: Web, Android, iOS (soon)
Release Date: 07/03/2014 (Web, Android)
Social Networks: Facebook, Twitter, Youtube
Flap in Time is a twisted Flappy-like game for those looking for more challenge! Master the physics behind your creature’s jump to make them come out alive of every scored point.
Every time you reach a gap and score a point, time slows down. Then, you must flap in time along with a timeline, placing jump markers where your character should jump, in order to survive and reach the next gap.
A new character is unlocked every 10 points. Try to beat your friends’ high score, and get 31 unique characters as you play!

Flappy Jam Finale!
I'm a little late on posting about Flappy Jam, but I finished the game and even posted it on Game Jolt! I've added everything I wanted to in the game including:
-Highscores
-Menu,Credits, and Restart Screen
-several levels or increasing difficulty including moving pipes
-Sounds, and Music
I'm overall really happy with the turn out of the game and want to do more clean up code-wise and art-wise, but that is for a later date. If you want to check it out Balloon Fight is hosted on Game Jolt, and if you'd like, rate it, leave a comment, and share the game for others to see! I'm already looking forward to my next project.
Logging out.
