#flamskväv

Swedish tapestry woven pillow, commonly known as “flamskväv”.

The name comes from Flemish artisans sharing their tapestry art while journeying to and settling in the southern parts of Scandinavia, including the province of Skåne, Sweden. The Netherlands and Belgium were known for tapestry production during the renaissance and into the 17th century, and the Swedish rural population readily took to the technique - simplifying the motifs and putting themselves into the world of exotic plants, animals, and birds. The art of flamskväv is alive and well in Sweden to this day and is a big part of the cultural heritage of Skåne.

This piece comes from the Lilli Zickerman collection, a series of 12 000 (often hand colourised) photographs of Swedish traditional craft objects.
