I’m struggling once more with GoT depiction of military tactics. No expertise beyond a PhD in the field that inspires the setting, but I’m so baffled by the implementation of the dragons as weapons. It didn’t make sense to me in episode 3--the lack of sustained fire defense in general, actually--and it didn’t make sense in episode 4. Okay, so they were taken unaware by the fleet, but then why didn’t Dany go wide and dracarys them from the side or from behind? A ballista is heavy. It takes lots of men and a long time to load and aim, because it’s only powerful if it’s really big and heavy. It fell out of favor for that reason! You couldn’t possibly whip those things around super fast and re-aim. It’s almost like they’ve never heard of a flanking maneuver. I know it’s dumb to expect realism from this show. But.
