as with literally everything else about Jiang Cheng,      this is complicated.     at its most shallow,  what he most wants is just to win,    to be simply the best despite all his shortcomings.   it’s a compulsion ingrained into him since childhood and just stoked by the competitive nature of the cultivation world and growing up being constantly measured up against his genius brother.     if we explore this further,       this search for power and success is also tethered to factors like wanting to protect those most important to him and prove his worth to them     (   especially his parents   ),      especially to be someone his parents would be proud of and uphold the honor of Jiang sect.        he often tends to be self-sacrificial in order to achieve this not only in terms of using himself physically as a shield/barrier/obstacle which an attacking force needs to get through or    (  attempt  )     to harm first before it gets to his loved ones but also by giving up a lot of autonomy wherein he forgets or just suppresses himself and his own wants/needs and pours himself into achieving what needs to be done in order to keep the sect and himself as leader on top and those he loves protected. 

coddling fragile male egos isn’t one of them.
