From a drawing to a digital piece. Flamenco hand gestures are seriously challenging to draw but I broke the hand down into different shapes as a warm up and kept practicing until I was relatively happy with the drawing. I then brought the drawing into a drawing app and traced over it. From there I played around with different filters. I'd like to play around with these gestures more and in different mediums.

Placing a digital image of hands posed in a flamenco gesture over a photograph I took a few years ago on a street in Málaga. I wanted to explore the idea of combining gesture and place. I don’t think I like the image much but it is a concept I’d like to revisit and I wanted to show where my head was at when I was trying to respond to the brief.

I wanted to see what it would look like to compose a photograph using screen shots on streets in Spain using Google Maps. I chose to take screen shots of urban areas in Málaga in the south of Spain, the south is mostly associated with flamenco and strong catholic tradition (semana santa being a very prominent holiday). I was inspired to mix urban spaces and the traditionalist quality of the flamenco gestures by singer songwriter Rosalía, her music videos combine traditional Spanish values and new age aesthetics which makes for a very alluring visual. I will leave a link to one of her music videos as an example of where this inspiration came from below this post. I enjoyed making these images as it allowed me to revisit a place that I made a lot of fond memories in and streets that I used to walk on a daily basis. Since we can’t travel during this pandemic it seems google maps at least offers the nostalgia of places once travelled or places to be travelled to in the future.

A GIF image corresponding to my previous post on flamenco gestures. I think a visual like this would maybe be interesting with sound. I am thinking about creating some sound clips inspired by flamenco music to combine with such video clips.
