Day 86 - Ode to FizzBuzz
FizzBuzz is the simplest of toy problems often presented to interview applicants to test right away whether they have ever really programmed before. It’s really simple - for each number from 1 to 100, if the number is divisible by 3, print “Fizz”, if the number is divisible by 5 print “Buzz”, and it’s divisible by both 3 and 5 print “FizzBuzz”. There’s been some controversy about the merits of using FizzBuzz as an interview technique, some think it’s too simple, or focuses on the wrong things, while others hold that it’s a necessary first step to reduce otherwise large applicant pools. Whatever your feelings, fizzbuzz represents the strange ways in which programmers get jobs.

Just survived my first technical interview…
I didn’t know it was going to be a technical interview. They didn’t say it was and when I told my mom I was worried it might be, she was like, “nah, no way, they’re just going to ask you about your experience.” It was a freaking technical interview.
They gave me two minutes to plan a five minute lesson on recursion and then had me “teach” it. They also had me do the Fizzbuzz test (easy) and program a class (I forgot the syntax for the constructor because ✨ anxiety ✨ but I think I guessed correctly). This was just…super unexpected. The questions weren’t difficult, but I hate getting out on the spot and it was terrifying.

yesterday my brain suddenly went “hey the cyclic multiplicative group of 𝔽₁₆ has order 15, just like fizzbuzz repeats the words every 15 steps”. the issue with that of course is that one would still need to output the numbers until 100 and the field simply doesn't have enough elements to keep track of that. however, the field 𝔽₂₅₆ has 𝔽₁₆ as a subfield and therefore can also track divisibility by 15 (and 3 and 5). the field also has native support on x86 using avx512 (and i tried hard to shoehorn the GF2P8AFFINEINVQB instruction into the program). the thing simply goes through consecutive powers of a primitive root of unity (primitive meaning that x^i = 1 only if i is a multiple of 255, the size of the multiplicative group). the divisibility checks for 3 or 5 are then equivalent to checking whether x^i to the powers 85 or 51 is 1, since that means i*85 or i*51 are a multiple of 255. for the non-fizzbuzz numbers one can calculate the discrete logarithm to recover i (mod 255) from x^i. anyway, here is the unreadable mess....

the code is a little intimidating but well-commented (and easier to read if you paste it somewhere with C syntax highlighting)
references for the SIMD instructions used:
The instruction multiplies elements in the finite field GF(2^8), operating on a byte (field element) in the first source operand and the corresponding byte in a second source operand. The field GF(2^8) is represented in polynomial representation with the reduction polynomial x^8 + x^4 + x^3 + x + 1.
The AFFINEB instruction computes an affine transformation in the Galois Field 2^8. For this instruction, an affine transformation is defined by A * x + b where “A” is an 8 by 8 bit matrix, and “x” and “b” are 8-bit vectors. One SIMD register (operand 1) holds “x” as either 16, 32 or 64 8-bit vectors. A second SIMD (operand 2) register or memory operand contains 2, 4, or 8 “A” values, which are operated upon by the correspondingly aligned 8 “x” values in the first register. The “b” vector is constant for all calculations and contained in the immediate byte.

For this instruction, an affine transformation is defined by A * inv(x) + b where “A” is an 8 by 8 bit matrix, and “x” and “b” are 8-bit vectors. The inverse of the bytes in x is defined with respect to the reduction polynomial x^8 + x^4 + x^3 + x + 1. One SIMD register (operand 1) holds “x” as either 16, 32 or 64 8-bit vectors. Luna and the Fizz Buzz Rabbit-hole
A couple years ago I noticed a neat bit of math relating to the modern programmer test version of fizzbuzz. I wanted to speak about it at the annual MathsJam Gathering, but plans fell through for various reasons, two years in a row. Eventually I decided to write it up as a blog post instead, just to get it out of my head.
How foolish past Luna was.
I started writing the intro to the article, covering what fizzbuzz is and where it came from, but I wasn't satisfied with just calling it a programmer test based on a children's game. I got curious as to where the game actually originated. So I started researching.
It's now late April. Since starting my research in January, I've:
trawled the depths of Google Books and archive.org
found seemingly the earliest recorded version of the game (at least in english) in an 1833 book for young girls, of which I now own a modern reprint
found countless variations under numerous names in all sorts of books and magazines, and catalogued them all in a still-growing masterdoc
found seemingly the earliest computer version in a 1982 Atari game, and researched around the publisher in an (as yet unfruitful) effort to identify who actually developed it
found multiple versions with BASIC source code in mid-'80s microcomputer magazines
most recently purchased an 1850 first-edition of a book describing an early version of the game, for which the only publicly-available scans are from a later 1880 edition... and found a pencilled inscription in the front of my copy that might’ve been written by this guy
So the history section has naturally become an entirely separate article (and is still a work-in-progress).
...and I still haven't written up the neat math thing.
