#five toes

Polydactyl is autosomal incomplete dominant. It usually gives chickens five toes on each foot (your typical chicken only has four.) In the heterozygous form it might have five on one foot and four on the other. Or it might be surpressed completely. Sometimes this gene expresses as more than 5 toes per foot. It's highly variable, and the toes can be arranged in any number of ways. The APA Standard of Perfection requires that the 5th toe sticks straight up above the hind toe.

The foot on the right side of the picture shows the preferred arrangement while the foot on the left shows an undesirable arrangement.

If the toes are arranged incorrectly, it can lead to foot problems. The extra toe is supposed to be useless but also not an active hindrance. Selective breeding ensures proper toe arrangement.

The scientific name for the Giant Anteater is Myrmecophaga Tridactyla meaning "anteater" and "three fingers" respectively. However, the Giant Anteater has five toes on each foot. – WTF Fun Facts

"I've been stuck in this gods-forsaken cave for close to two weeks now... and I think I may be losing my mind. Just off the edge of the rock bed I've been lying on to keep dry, a mermaid (for lack of a better term) is staring at me.
