The ballroom of Castle Vermillion was covered head-to-toe in red and black decorations. It was Princess Ruby’s 19th birthday party and despite the grudges the King and Queen felt because of it, they had succumbed to her request for the colors.

Usually, the castle and kingdom followed the pastel lifestyle, something Ruby had always, even as a child, never felt drawn to.

Seasons changed but the colors never did. Why pink roses? 

Why not red?

Red was more fierce, powerful. 

Red brought status without words.

That is why she always kept adorned with a crimson ribbon in her hair.

She intimidated most princes.

Most suitors.

But she didn’t enjoy their company anyway.

How could she?

Every young man that was “fit to rule” was the same.

Looking for a queen, not a wife, boring, rich, snotty, tall, usually blonde.

Why blonde?

She preferred dark.

She preferred the Jester.

Of course, she hadn’t expected the crimson ribbon to fall to the floor of the Jester’s corridor.

She hadn’t expected herself to fall into the bed of the Jester’s corridor.
