AN ~ a fic literally years in the posting (oops) has finally finished and bi!Fitz has finally cocooned through his journey and is ready to come out; and who better to hear it first than his long-time best friend, fellow queer, & potential partner, Jemma Simmons!
*note: I have left the endgame ship(s) of this fic deliberately ambiguous. I invite you to ship whoever you want; follow it through to its canon conclusion or keep FS platonic, I do not mind (hello, I love both options so much I couldnât finish the fic for literal years!), but thereâs been a lot of tagging/shipping discourse up in here lately and Iâm not here for it, so: this fic doesnât âbelongâ to any ship. It belongs to bi!Fitz, no matter who he ends up with <3
and now, without further ado:
Rshps: platonic (or pre-rshp) FS with mentions of romantic FitzSimmons, FitzMack, FitzHunter, FitzSkye, Skimmons, and Simmorse.
Rated: T for mild sexual references & innuendo. Fluff (with a few angsty moments, but I promise I make up for them :P)
for Anon prompt, and @meanderings0ul who I think might enjoy it, based on a recent prompt of theirs as well :)
bi!Fitz comes out to bi! (or pan) Jemma
Changing Stripes
âSo whatâs going on with you?â
âHow dâyou mean?â
Fitz looked over his shoulder, back at Jemma who was lying on the couch. She put a piece of popcorn into her mouth, shrugged, and repeated the question.
âYou know. I was away for months, Fitz. It must have been awful, but I donât expect you to have been thinking about me the entire time. You must have done something. Learnt something. Bought a shirt? Watched a movie? I donât know. Something.â
âYeah, nothing much,â Fitz replied with a shrug of his own. He reached for the bowl of popcorn, and Jemma slid it out of his reach with a firm glare.
âLeopold James Fitz,â she breathed. âFirst: I was stuck on a desert planet, mostly alone, and it was permanently night time. For six months. You donât even know what doing nothing is. And second: please get dramatic about something? I need the gossip.â
I need to know you didnât spend the entire six months thinking about nothing but me, was what she wanted to say, but their relationship still wasnât quite what it had once been; still wasnât quite sure exactly what it was. She had to be careful with it. But she also wanted to let her friend know â because thatâs what he still was, no matter what else happened â that she cared about him. She missed him. That, at least, he seemed to get, as he gestured for her to sit up and came to sit up beside her, rather than in front of her on the floor.
âSomething did happen, actually,â he confessed. There was a little sparkle in his eye, but a nervous energy to the way that he moved, the combination of which piqued Jemmaâs curiosity. Seeing the words on the tip of his tongue, she held out the popcorn bowl, and he downed a handful as one might drink a shot before revealing big news. He took a deep breath.
âI came out,â he declared. âWell â I guess I didnât, technically, come out âtil just now. Youâre the first person Iâve told. Joey knows, sort of, but-â
âAs what?â Jemma interrupted.
âHm?â
âCame out as what?â Her eyes glimmered with pride and excitement. She bit back her instinct to say I told you so, and grinned at him instead. âYou never said.â
âOh,â he said, and grinned, as the gears in his head stopped grinding; overthinking; qualifying. âIâm bi.â
Jemma squealed, jostling the popcorn dangerously close to falling out of the bowl.
âTell me everything!â she begged. âHow did you know? When did you know? Was it Mack? It was Mack wasnât it. Or was it Hunter⌠Heâs a little roguish, but heâs got that loner-with-a-heart-of-gold air working for him quite well, doesnât he? I can see you falling for that.â
Fitz waved her off. âIt was lots of things. Ever since the Academy. I just kept telling myself, it was nothing â you know, it was hormones or jealousy or whatever.â
âLife goals or wife goals,â Jemma added, nodding in understanding.
â- but every time I started to think about it, really think about it,â Fitz continued, âsomething would happen, and it would go away, or Iâd spook myself and hide it. Joey saw through all that, and he sort of- he got me to reflect on all this stuff, the crushes and everything, and I realised that actually⌠Iâve known about this for a long time. I just wasnât ready to accept it.â
Jemma nodded. Her own sexual awakening had come to her rather easily, but she knew a good number of people for whom it had not been so simple, or welcomed. Yet she couldnât help but spare a moment of solemnity for the messy timing of all this. She found herself wanting to ask, so what does this mean for us?, but of course she already knew. The answer was probably, nothing. Just because Fitz now recognised another side to his romantic and sexual nature, it didnât change his feelings for her, and it didnât change the mess they were in. And it didnât change the fact that he still trusted her enough to tell her first.
âHow do you feel about it now?â she asked instead.
âHonestly, good,â Fitz replied, then qualified - âMost of the time. I still doubt myself sometimes, or I think, what would Mack say if he caught me staring, you know? Would it change things between us?â
Seeing that he was starting to fret, Jemma put an arm around Fitzâs shoulder and pulled him close. These were waters she knew well.
âThatâs okay,â she promised. âThese are all very normal feelings, and you donât have to tell Mack â or anyone â if you donât want to. But heâs a good man and he wonât hate you for it. And, you know, have you ever considered that it could change things in a good way? If you feel like youâre hiding something or lying to him now, coming out might help that. Youâll feel more secure. And⌠you might even get a date out of it. I donât know Mackâs situation, of course, but if I were you I wouldnât let those guns pass me by without letting him know I was on the table.â
â⌠Thatâs a very sexual image.â
âYes it is.â Jemma bit her tongue. She was going to enjoy mocking Fitz relentlessly, he always got so flustered when it came to matters of the body, but she had to ease him into it first. âBut itâs not just a matter of that, is it? You said you liked the way Mack treats you, with respect, with forwardness, with kindness. You enjoy doing things together. Same taste in cars, same taste in movies; thatâs as good a place as any to start. It seems to me you two could build, if youâd pardon the pun, quite the life together â or at least show each other a good time.
âOr what about Hunter? Now, I know for a fact he likes people of the masculine persuasion. Heâs got a nice beard, very rugged, and donât think I havenât seen you checking out that ass. From what Iâve heard, heâs also a great softie, underneath all that swagger. You two would get along quite well, Iâd imagine. Although, the fights over football would be a problem. He barracks for a different team does he not?â
Fitz snorted, as if about to start on a rant at the very thought, but then something occurred to him and he smiled to himself. âWe play together too, though. Football, I mean. Heâs rather good at it.â
âSee?â Jemma nudged him. Fitz laughed.
âAlright, so are you going to set me up with every guy in this place or what?â
âWell, you donât have many options left as regards the women,â Jemma pointed out. âDaisyâs somewhat taken, apparently; May, while gorgeous, is too old for you; and Iâm sorry but Bobbi is just out of your league.â
âOh, but right in yours is she?â
âWhat?â Now it was Jemmaâs turn to blush.
âDonât âwhatâ me,â Fitz scoffed, smugly taking another handful of popcorn. âYou know full well what Iâm talking about. You started at her legs when she walked into the lab the first time for a full minute. A full minute Jemma-â
âWhat about you!â Jemma retorted. âI saw you lick your lips when Mack walked out the other day with that tank top and the grease stain on his collarbone-â
âYou started fake cursing like an old woman from the South the first time you saw Daisy without a top on-â
Verbal arguments failing her, Jemma shoved the bowl of popcorn at Fitz. He shoved it back, and she deflected it straight onto the floor, sending popcorn spilling out across the carpet. They paused for a moment in their bickering, and decided theyâd best clean it up, so they slithered onto the floor together and crawled around on their hands and knees, dropping popcorn piece by piece back into the bowl. The fight was not over yet though, with Jemma taking this distraction as a chance to have the final word. Â
âItâs not like you can talk, Mr âlet me show you my equipment,ââ she mumbled.
âWhat was that?â Fitz beckoned, and flicked a piece of popcorn at her. It bounced off her shoulder. âDid you have something youâd like to share with the class, Ms âwell formed and symmetricalâ?â
âUgh, Fitz!â Jemma groaned, and threw a handful of kernels at him.
âShove off!â he yelped, trying to shield himself against the rain. He reached for the bowl, half-full of their recovered popcorn, and flicked handful after handful in retaliation. Jemma gathered her reserves from what remained on the floor, and the two of them engaged in a highly undignified food-fight until there was nothing left but abandoned corn like fallen snow, and two very giggly super geniuses, catching their breath from laughter for the first time in years.

@cardb0rdeaux ha respondido a tu publicaciĂłn: Hey, peeps, because of reasons Iâm wanting to try...
Fitzmack please? Iâve always loved that moment from season 2 when Fitz implies that he finds him attractive and the height/size difference is hella cute. :)
Here you go! Sorry it took me so long, writing has been coming at me slowly. This is pre-relationship, but Iâm more than willing to take on more prompts for these two or other Fitz-ships, if anyone wants to read more.
Also fits the prompt âfoodâ for @aosadvent2017.
Not matter what Hunter implies- and also what Hunter very explicitly says; and believe him, Hunter can get very explicit-, there are a ton of reasons why this could end in disaster, including but not limited to:
His feelings for Jemma are vox populi, and even though everyone proclaims that they want nothing more than to help him get over them, when the moment of words turning into practical help comes, nobody is actually willing to do what needs to be done.
He has no knowledge about whether Mack is or isnât into guys, and he is not counting Hunter commentary as factual proof.
He is, well, himself, and everything he does turns into a messy mess quicker than he can snap his fingers (and he is getting better and better at snapping his fingers).
â Is it just me, or is it getting hot in here? â - Fitzmack
âIs it getting hot in here, or it just me?â
Mack doesnât wait for an answer, he just shrugs off his shirtlike itâs no big deal that heâs now practically half naked. Both, Fitz wants to say.
Itâs only him and Fitz in the garage though, and Fitz definitelydoesnât miss the way Mack smirks at him for no apparent reason unless â
âI-I mean that itâs probably warmer in here and because ofthat youâre obviously warm too and ââ he should probably stop trying becauseMackâs expression only grows more amused.
âCan we just forget that happened?â The answer was probablygoing to be no, but at this point it was worth trying.
âDo you want to forget that it happened?â
Fitz bites the inside of his cheek. âDo you?â
âNot what I asked, Turbo.â He supposes thatâs what he get foranswering a question with another question.
âNo.â Itâs a meek no, but itâs not a yes either, and thatâsabout as much as Mack would get at this point.
Fitz is staring at the ground when Mack shifts closer, handsmoving to lightly grasp his waist. âIâve been flirting with you for weeks and acheesy pick up line is what wins you over?â
Itâs not really a question as much as surprised comment, andFitz just puts his hands on his shoulders and drags him down for a kiss to keephim from embarrassing him further.
Fitz tried to deny it, but what came out was an overly slurred version of the word no, so he opted for a shake of his head instead.Â
Mack couldnât help grinning as he grasped the fifth beer bottle from Fitzâs hand and dragged it away from his grasp.Â
"Iâm not letting you get like that." Mack insisted, tipping the beer bottle in the direction of Hunter, who was currently passed out on the kitchen floor.Â
He could only hope that Bobbi would come to retrieve him soon, although for his sake it would be better to sleep on the floor instead of facing her wrath.Â
"You-youâŚshould kiss me." Fitz slurred once again, leaning forward towards Mack.
"Youâre definitely drunk."
"OkayâŚokay yeahâŚI am but you should-should still kiss me."Â
Mackâs smile faltered at that. This conversation was bordering into dangerous territory far quicker than he could have imagined.Â
"Iâll tell you what, ask me again in the morning and then weâll see."
Fitz contemplated that response before nodding enthusiastically and resuming the futile process of trying to retrieve his stolen beer bottle.Â
"How many times have you been married?" Fitz asked in a soft tone, averting his gaze from Mackâs in favor of laying his head on his chest and continuing to play with the engagement ring on his finger.

"i couldnât reach the christmas decorations on the top shelf and you look tall so can you please help me" + fitzmack tho because it'd be super freaking adorable, cause fitz is so small okay OKAAAY
Five times Fitz tried to tell Mack he was in love with him
For sensoryinputpatterns
One
The realization that he was in love with Mack and not with Jemma felt like someone tossed a bucket of water on him. At first, he thought that he was only attached to the mechanic because he was the only person in the base who treated him like a person. However, after all the video game sessions and desire to be in his presence once Jemma returned, made him think.
So now, all that he has to do was tell Mack how he felt. This wasnât going to turn out well, he could already tell.
Fitz managed to work up the courage but the problem was, the men were never alone. There was no way heâd do this in front of people especially Hunter and Skye, who kept telling him to get it over with and put everyone out of their misery.
âHey Turbo, got somethinâ on your mind?â
The engineer turned at the sudden noise.
âUm, yeahâŚactually, I have um, something to tell you.â
âOkay man, Iâm listenâ. Go ahead.â
The expectant look on Mackâs face as he crossed his arms and leaned against the table was distracting.
Only, when he went to speak, the words were stuck in his throat. Fitz thought that he looked like a fish.
âUmâŚwell, lookâŚ..I canâtâŚI canât do this right now.â
Then the engineer turned and fled from the garage.
Two
The pair was working on a project together; something straight forward but involving several parts made up of smaller parts so all hands on deck were needed.
Fitz looked up as he was going to say something but Mack was biting his lower lip and it was distracting.
Sensing the other man looking at him, Mack looked over and grinned.
âYou know Turbo, a picture would last longer.â
Rolling his eyes, the Scotsman decided this would be a good time to try making his confession again.
However, the door to the garage opened with a bang.
The pair looked over and saw Bobbi approaching.
âHey, you guys at a point where I can steal Mack away for a bit?â
Mack looked down at their project then at Fitz before turning to their friend and nodded.
âSure. Whatâs up, Bobbi?â
The woman let out a sigh.
âHunterâs being a super idiot again.â
The pair shared a look as the engineer tried to not let his jealousy and frustration get the better of him.
âIâll be back later and we can finish this, Turbo.â
Fitz did the only thing he could, he nodded.
Three
It was one of those days when Fitz didnât feel like dealing with anyone. So, instead of working in the lab with Mack and Simmons, he was working on a tablet in his room. The designs were good but not quite right. He looked up for a moment and realized he had spent several hours working without knowing it. Then his stomach decided to interrupt.
Fitz walked to the kitchen as he tried to figure out to make to eat when he heard Mackâs voice.
âHey Turbo. Whereâve you been? I tried checking in the lab a few times today but they said you werenât there.â
Seeing the worry on the face of the man he loves, Fitz knew he had to tell him.
âI was working on designs on my tablet in my room; quieter in there.â
The relief on the mechanicâs face made him want to tell him about how he felt.
âThere you are, Fitz. I need you in the lab so we can move onto phase two of the tests. Oh hey, Mack.â
Simmons walked down the hallway briskly before looping her arm around Fitzâ.
âI hope that Iâm not interrupting something.â
Before either man could answer, his stomach spoke up.
âFitz, when was the last time you ate? Come on, Iâll make you your favorite sandwich then we can get to work.â
The woman started dragging him away; Mack looked amused.
âWeâll catch up later, Turbo,â he shouted after them.
 Four and Five
The team was getting ready to check out the underground city. Bobbi and Coulson had just arrived as Fitz, Mack and Simmons were preparing the gear.
Fitz couldnât get what Skye had said earlier about having a bad feeling that something was going to happen or at least, thatâs what Simmons had said. Looking down into the cavern, he really hoped his favorite hacker was wrong.
âAlright Turbo, time to get this party started.â
Watching Mack go over the edge, Fitz opened his mouth to say something. But suddenly, things started happening faster than he could keep up and before he knows it, he has a gun pointed at Mack. Only one thought was going through his mindâŚ.he wished that he told Mack that he was in love with him.
Several hours later, Fitz is standing outside of Mackâs medical room and watching the other man sleep. This was the first time since the team made it back to the Bus that he came to see the man he loved. Earlier, he was needed to help Simmons run blood tests on Mack, Skye ad Trip but part of him, was hiding away. The regret of not telling Mack his feelings was eating at him.
Out of the corner of his eye, Fitz could see Skye gesturing for him to go into Mackâs room with her free hand as the clutches Tripâs tightly.
The engineer took a deep breath then entered the room. Immediately, he heads over to the chair next to the bed he was sure had been occupied by Bobbi for most of the night until Hunter made her leave to get some real sleep. As he sat down, he took in the sight of the sleeping Mack. He didnât think that this was right.
âI hate this, Mack. I hate that I couldnât tell you how I feelâŚ.I am in love with you.â
The mechanic slept on, snoring lightly and totally unaware of Fitzâ presence at his side.
And the one time that he did
Thirty-six hours after the visit to the underground city and Mack had been released to go back to his normal routine.
Fitz knew that this was his second chance and both of them deserved this.
Luckily, he managed to get Mack alone in the garage.
âHey Turbo. Youâve got that look on your face like youâre trying to figure out a puzzle.â
Letting out a sigh, Fitz met his gaze.
âIâve something to tell you but I donât know how to tell you.â
âIs it the thing youâve been trying to tell me the last few days? Seems kinda important. You know, I wonât judge you.â
Deciding to do it like he was taking off a band aid, Fitz took another deep breath.
âI love youâŚIâm in love with you, Mack.â
He bit his lip as he waited for the other manâs reaction.
Once Mack got over his shock, a familiar grin blossomed on his face.
âWish you would of told the others to shove of earlier, so I could do this sooner.â
The taller man cupped his face with both hands and pulled him into a deep kiss.
