An open fireplace may actually be one of the most convenient wood heaters. You can simply bring it to the patio for the kids to enjoy while cooking their marshmallows. It is like having a campfire in your very own backyard. You can place it in any strategic location since it can be easily moved. Many people can share the heat of this fireplace stove since it affords you a 360 degrees access to its warmth. In addition, this very basic fireplace design makes it very affordable.  

The only downside to an open fireplace is that open pit fires have a tendency to smoulder and make a lot of smoke. This smoke can be blown around like right at your face where the wind wishes to push it. If you have been on a campfire then you will know that smoke on your eyes can be very uncomfortable. The exact opposite of an open fireplace is an enclosed or partly enclosed fireplace. To keep the smoke away, you would need to attach a vent that will release the smoke above head level and away from people’s faces. This is a bit more expensive because of the additional material. It will also be heavier so it is a bit cumbersome to move around. Moreover, you will not have the ambiance and that unique appeal often associated with an open fireplace heater.
