For #WomensHistoryMonth weâre highlighting Firelei BĂĄezâs âCiguapa Antellana, me llamo sueño de la madrugada. (who more sci-fi than us)â (2018) at the 163 St-Amsterdam Ave (C) station, where the larger than life ciguapas (powerful convention-breaking feminine figures from Dominican folklore) immersed in tropical greenery intertwined with multicultural healing imagery, join passengers on the daily commute. BĂĄez reworks diasporic history in her explorations of feminine mythology and artifacts overlaid onto large-scale maps and documents in her new exhibition at James Cohan Gallery, open through April 25th.

You can also see her work in En Plein Air on the Highline (at 20th Street) depicting a Haitian Sans-Souci Palace ruin that appears to sink into the ground.

Itâs Dominican Independence Day! Firelei BĂĄezâs artwork  at 163rd St-Amsterdam Av (C train) in Washington Heights is situated in a community reported to house the largest Dominican population outside of Santo Domingo. In the artistâs words about her tropical mosaic installation, âI wantedâŠresidents to be able to say âthis is meâ or âthis is something I recognize as my ownâ. She added, âI wanted Dominicans to just revel in itâ. The azabaches, ciguapas and other cultural symbols speak of place and the station is well worth a visit!
