Keep your distance from the gossips, and donβt engage with gossiping when people try to gossip with you. Gossip isnβt inherently bad, especially if itβs a whisper network of people warning each other about dangerous people. If this isnβt information that could help keep you physically safe, donβt engage with it. Youβll need to make yourself boring to this person in order for them not to engage with you again. If someone (probably this person) is overly critical of you, donβt take it to heart as true and total fact. You might need to keep documentation of this person treating you unfairly, or unfair ways they treat others that you witness. Keep your head on straight and donβt take what this person says personally. They feel weak and spiteful. Thatβs really it. Also, you need to improve your communication skills. If youβre neurodivergent, or more specifically autistic, look up what the neurodiverse and autistic educators have to say about talking to allistic or neurotypical people. In general, learn email etiquette and how people in different generations prefer to communicate. Do you give enough details when you speak, or do you over explain yourself? There are tons of great resources out there, use them to your advantage! Also, start a βbrag documentβ that you keep for just yourself so when you are applying to other jobs you can share your wins much more easily (as well as advocate for yourself when applying for a promotion, etc).

Start rejecting invitations to happy hour, or the alcoholic beverages people are inviting you to have. With this being a shitty job or even a toxic workspace, staying sober while with colleagues is what will protect you and serve your best interests. Because HR rules still apply even while you and other coworker are off the clock. What is said at the bar can and will affect you in a future meeting. If so much of your work culture depends on you going out to drinks with colleagues after work (I know thatβs common in Japan for example), figure out clever ways to politely reject the peer pressure to drink and get drunk. Get your own drinks and make sure theyβre non-alcoholic. When someone asks you what that drink is, thatβs just half cranberry juice and half club soda with lime, you can say itβd a a vodka half cran half club. If thereβs a good work culture of respecting non-drinkers, then you donβt half to lie - I just gave you a good one in case you ever need it. If youβre recovering from alcoholism/ are an alcoholic, donβt feel bad about turning down happy hours if you need to. Invite people to morning coffee instead! You probably wonβt get takers lol, but the sentiment is a good one. Basically, always remember that just because you left the work building doesnβt mean youβve left work when youβre out with coworkers and colleagues.

Opportunities and good things are coming, and you need to move in silence about them! Iβm serious, donβt share with any coworkers your ideas, or positions youβre applying for, or that the boss is talking to you about a promotion until the good thing has already happened. Basically, donβt talk about it until itβs real. Your real friends will be happy for you, so donβt worry about keeping your cards close to your chest for now. Share your ideas with the people who will actually affect them. Once the ideas manifest into something real, then you can share them with everyone else. If you have an opportunity to be mentored by someone, or be someone elseβs mentor, take it! Trust yourself in your endeavors, you have all of the skills you need. You might be second guessing yourself because youβre not sure if youβre ready to take a new position at this job or accept a job offer, but it doesnβt matter how you feel about it. You got everything you need, itβs time to give yourself a little faith.
