Hey I just read your piece for the blackwatch zine and I am so freakin in love with it. Genji reflecting on how his body is now a weapon that belongs to someone else was a real kick in the teeth- I live for that kinda angst. Thanks for writing <3
Thanks so much!! I had a ton of fun writing Gabe and Genji’s interaction so I’m glad you enjoyed it. I haven’t written much more of Genji but there’s some of him in the recent chapters of my (crazy long) McCree fic Dispense with Right and Wrong on AO3 :3b

Pre Kerberos, I feel like there wasn’t that much Shiro felt insecure about. He could be unsure about things, he could feel the pressure of being a star pilot and top student but he’s probably worked pretty hard for it to be achieved, so he knows what he can and can’t do, and even if he can’t do something, he’ll try anyway, he’ll see where he can improve. He’s … settled, grown into himself, pretty much content.
On the other hand, Keith has lived with some things (family history, orphanage) probably since he was a kid, so those things don’t feel like insecurities or issues, but just who he is. He’s honest, he’s confident in assessing what he’s good at, he will tell you if he thinks he’s good at it, too he just, doesn’t hide things. He likes being fast, he likes the world to become a blur, to just lose himself in whatever comes at him at high speeds, so he has to focus on surviving, on the road, solely.
I think that’s why he finds comfort in Shiro and how Shiro makes him question things about himself he never has questioned before, not in a bad way, but he’s being challenged, in new ways but very gently, steadily, because Keith’s unlike anyone Shiro has ever known and he’s learning how to be his friend, too, how to be as honest as Keith is, with him. And in a way Keith is learning how to believe someone will stay in his life, won’t leave him, will be there for him, unconditionally. He’s learning to try to depend on someone else, when all he used to have was himself (and his knife) and it’s a big step for Keith, to allow himself to love a person and rely on them, so much.
After the Kerberos missing, when they’re Paladins, well, Shiro’s whole being was pretty much shattered with trauma and suddenly, the things he’s never struggled with (responsibility, people relying on him) seem like such a heavy thing to carry, every day. He’s doubting if his will to live was the correct choice, if his decision to kill to survive was worth it, he’s doubting the very roots of himself, if everything’s been corrupted by the Galra, if he himself has been corrupted and it’s quite hard for Keith, to see Shiro crumble like that. It’s hard for him to be the one who brings comfort, but he wants to be the one, too, he will hold Shiro together if he has to clutch all of the pieces together with sheer force and stubborness, if he has to hold them in the shape of Shiro, until Shiro can heal, rebuild himself. He’s there to find Shiro whenever he loses himself. Not to mention he won’t ever, ever abandon Shiro. No matter what.
