Watching my stepfather Clarence shave with his Magic Shave carefully with a straight razor with his turquoise pinky ring glistening on his finger. My dad, Colman pulling up once in a blue moon wearing tight white gabardine trousers stepping out of his yellow Cadillac with the white roof, smiling under shaded aviator sunglasses. As I stood for these portraits with @ikeude I thought of these influences. My little brother Phillip ran through my mind as well, as he always wanted to do what I did growing up so my mother said you have to be a great influence since he’s watching you. I thought of the generations of men before me and with me now that stand with me. No one gets to moments like these alone. I am humbled and filled with so much gratitude for this moment. Here in Mexico City just walking through gardens with my loved ones, taking a breath to just be filled with food and sights and experiences. What a start to a gorgeous day. Some 30 years into his professional acting career, Colman Domingo is surely one of the most celebrated men in Hollywood right now. Beyond winning an Emmy (for “Euphoria”) and being nominated for two Academy Awards (for 2023’s “Rustin” and 2024’s “Sing Sing”), two BAFTAs, four SAG Awards, two Tonys, and an Olivier, he’s also become a force on the red carpet, freely experimenting with color and cut.
Ahead of this year’s #MetGala, where he’ll serve as a cochair, Domingo met with Monica L. Miller, guest curator of the Costume Institute’s “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” exhibition, to start scouting references. What he didn’t anticipate was becoming quite so moved at the sight of Black mannequins. “I am a Black man who loves style, loves tailoring, and it struck me that I had never seen images like that—of myself, saying, I belong in these clothes,” he says.
