Bruno Mars - 24K Magic
Earlier this year, I reviewed the debut album from Bruno Mars, 2010’s Doo-Wops & Hooligans, and I thought it was pretty good, but I mentioned my favorite Bruno album as 2016’s 24K Magic. I still stand by that, but it took me forever to get a copy of it. I finally found one a month or so ago, and it’s taken me awhile to talk about it, because I just haven’t had time to properly write about it. While I was a fan of his music already, having picked up 2012’s Unorthodox Jukebox when it came out in 2012, 24K Magic was the album that got me into Bruno’s music more so, especially after hearing the title track; this record was kind of a reinvention for his sound. His sound was a smorgasbord of pop, soul, R&B, and funk, but his whole shtick is adapting these timeless styles of music and making it more modern.
24K Magic moved towards hip-hop, R&B, and new jack swing, versus more retro styles of music. Sure, new jack swing is retro in itself, but it was something different. The album turns ten this year, so I’ve wanted to revisit it, anyway, but this album holds up really well. It’s really short, only around 33 minutes, but it’s really fun. There are a lot of songs on the album I really enjoy, such as “That’s What I Like,” “Finesse,” and the title track. The album is only 9 songs, but even so, it goes by quick. There are a couple songs that don’t do much for me, such as “Chunky,” but they’re not bad. The real draw for this album is Bruno himself; his voice is amazing, and his lyrics aren’t half bad, but he’s a showman. There isn’t a lot to say about this album other than that it’s pretty good, but it’s held up well and it’s my favorite Bruno album.
