Oh, that's why...
01d55: I'm playing La-Mulana
Fifthfiend: whats that
01d55: It's hard. Like, half an hour of "I'm never gonna figure any of this shit out" and then bam, I figure something out, I am the greatest, this will last like 15 minutes before I realize I can't figure out the next thing
Fifthfiend: so according to the wiki its... castlevania-ish
Fifthfiend: but i guess, fucks hard?
Fifthfiend: sure
01d55: That's a latter day castlevania ish, from the point where Castlevania was metroid-ish
Fifthfiend: that sounds like kind of the opposite of what id want my castlevanias to be tbh
Fifthfiend: or my metroids
01d55: The way progression is set up though, I wound up sequence breaking by accident
01d55: Like, I did not get the first thing I was supposed to get until after I'd killed two bosses
Fifthfiend: well that doesn't help
01d55: Also, killing bosses is mostly orthogonal to progression, I'm pretty sure you can save most of them until the very end
Magmarashi: wait
Magmarashi: [It's hard. Like, half an hour of "I'm never gonna figure any of this shit out" and then bam, I figure something out, I am the greatest, this will last like 15 minutes before I realize I can't figure out the next thing]
Magmarashi: So..it's programming?
01d55: Haha yes
01d55: The cryptic hints are like stack traces
KneumaticPnight: La Mulana is a game about being as obscure as possible.
Fifthfiend: i guess its not surprising that so much of early videogaming seems to take it as given that frustrated incomprehension is something that people enjoy
